Book excerpt: Confrontés à des environnements compétitifs en pleine croissance, les services d'information et de documentation sont de plus en plus amenés à se familiariser avec la notion de marketing. Depuis les années 1980, le marketing documentaire a fait l'objet de nombreuses réflexions ou publications dans la presse spécialisée. Mais pourtant, dans la réalité, très peu de services de documentation ont atteint un niveau d'orientation marketing complète. Ceci est dû en partie au fait que les services d'information perçoivent le marketing comme une série d'actions tactiques plutôt que comme un véritable positionnement stratégique sur le long-terme ; et en autre partie à la résistance des personnels documentaires à adopter une orientation clients. Le client, justement, a bien changé depuis quatre ou cinq ans. On ne le reconnaît plus : il est nomade, infidèle, capricieux, désintéressé et fainéant : il attend que tout vienne à lui ; il a des amis virtuels et assume bien volontiers sa " second life " quand il en a une ; il est toujours connecté, ses traits sont pixélisés et il parle une langue où tous les mots commencent par un e- ou par un @. Chaque année, sur les bancs de la fac, dans les couloirs des écoles, et dans les rayons de leurs bibliothèques il y en a de plus en plus. Ce n'est pourtant pas une invasion d'extra-terrestres, c'est simplement l'arrivée de la génération Y. Cette génération c'est celle du Web 2.0 : c'est là qu'ils vivent, c'est là qu'ils sont. Bien cramponnés à leur mode de vie, ils ne laissent que deux choix pour nos bibliothèques : les Y laisser ou les Y rejoindre. Les y rejoindre, c'est le pari qu'a fait la Bibliothèque Centrale de l'Ecole Polytechnique avec son projet " BCX 2.0 ", lancé au mois de mai 2008 après un processus de réflexion entamé 6 mois plus tôt. Book excerpt: In The Origins of Comics: From William Hogarth to Winsor McCay, Thierry Smolderen presents a cultural landscape whose narrative differs in many ways from those presented by other historians of the comic strip. Rather than beginning his inquiry with the popularly accepted "sequential art" definition of the comic strip, Smolderen instead wishes to engage with the historical dimensions that inform that definition. His goal is to understand the processes that led to the twentieth-century comic strip, the highly recognizable species of picture stories that he sees crystallizing around 1900 in the United States. Featuring close readings of the picture stories, caricatures, and humoristic illustrations of William Hogarth, Rodolphe Töpffer, Gustave Doré, and their many contemporaries, Smolderen establishes how these artists were immersed in a very old visual culture in which images—satirical images in particular—were deciphered in a way that was often described as hieroglyphical. Across eight chapters, he acutely points out how the effect of the printing press and the mass advent of audiovisual technologies (photography, audio recording, and cinema) at the end of the nineteenth century led to a new twentieth-century visual culture. In tracing this evolution, Smolderen distinguishes himself from other comics historians by following a methodology that explains the present state of the form of comics on the basis of its history, rather than presenting the history of the form on the basis of its present state. This study remaps the history of this influential art form.
