Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Points of the Horse: A Treatise on the Conformation, Movements, Breeds and Evolution of the Horse On returning to England, I brought out the first edition of this book, which was so kindly received by the public that it was sold out in six months. Having by that time settled down in Melton Mow bray, I became aware that the illustrations in the book were far from being complete, and that, to do justice to the subject, it was necessary for me to renew my acquaintance with certain classes of English horses, and especially with hunters. Hence, instead of meeting the demands of the literary market by an immediate reprint, I continued my studies among horses for two years in Leicestershire and one year in Cheshire; hunting, breaking, training, and practising as a veterinary surgeon. I received such great kindness from horse owners and photographers, that I was able to add I42 reproductions of photo graphs to the second edition, which was published in the beginning of 1897. But bottom rather than dash seems to have been emphasized in the earlier horse-matches, and sport rather than improvement of breed was the incentive to action. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse in America: A Practical Treatise on the Various Types Common in the United States, With Something of Their History and Varying Characteristics There have been so many books written about horses that in offering a new one I feel that an ex planation, if not an apology, is due. And I am embarrassed as to how to frame the explanation without seeming to reflect on the books previous ly given to the public. Nothing could be further from my desire. Most of these previous books have been devoted to special kinds or types of horses without any effort to cover avery broad field. Some others have been frankly partizan with the avowed purpose of proving that this type or that was the only one that was worth serious con sideration. All these are interesting, but valuable chiefly to the careful student bent on going into the subject of horse breeding and horse training in all of its branches. To do this an ordinary reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Horses and Horse Breeding Should I attempt to narrate one-half of what has been told me by such venerable horsemen, or to produce one - quarter of my correspondence with such persons, that matter would of itself make a book double the size of this; consequently, I con fine myself to the facts gathered as being of more importance to'my readers than to oblige them to wade through the waters that I have passed through in order to gather them. As to the illustrations contained herein, I have endeavored to give the true likeness of a few of the most noted horses mentioned, and that of myself, the author, thinking that these may be both interesting and instructive to my readers; but have refrained from filling up the book with illustrations for aign to the object of the work for the sake of making an unnecessarily large and high-priced book. Book The Regeneration of the Morgan Horse Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Regeneration of the Morgan Horse Classic Reprint written by George M. Rommel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Regeneration of the Morgan Horse Of the three types of light horses which American breeders have developed during a century and a quarter, none stands higher in history, judged from the interest and affection which have been devoted to it, none has had a more direct and lasting influence on other types, none, in fact, has been more uniform in type, more prepotent in breeding, or more nearly a fixed breed than the Morgan horse. With an ancestry which must have been of the highest merit, reared on the limestone and granite hills of New England, imbued with remarkable endurance and stamina by a rigorous but invigor ating climate, these little horses seventy-five years ago yielded to none in popularity and held first place in the actual money value placed on individuals and on the service fees of sires. Fifty years ago Morgan stallions were received in the Show rings of Kentucky with enthusiasm. Yet during the last twenty years the name of Morgan has been anathema among the horse breeders of Kentucky, the breed has been rarely seen in the Show ring at state and national fairs, and the live-stock press and many horsemen of authority have declared the Morgan to be an extinct race. Book The Horse and How to Care for Him

Download or read book The Horse and How to Care for Him written by C. T. Davies and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and How to Care for Him: How to Choose a Horse, Tell His Age, Feed, Stable, Harness and Train Him, and Keep Him in Good Health The class of animal most likely to be required by the average horse-owner is the harness horse, so that in considering the various points we will keep this ideal in view. In many respects the harness horse requires the combined points of a saddle-horse and a cart horse, and, leaving out of the question exaggerated examples, such as that galloping machine the race-horse, or that equine giant the Percheron, we shall find that the bony conformation of the one differs very little, except in a minor degree, from that of the others. Such differences as exist are as a rule muscular, and as we go along we shall endeavor to indicate the various classes of work for which each variety of conformation is best suited. Book Heavy Horses

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heavy Horses: Breeds and Management The task of attempting to give a short history of the rise and progress of the Shire horse is by no means an easy one. It is true that a considerable amount of evidence exists to show that in days long before the Christian era the breed of horses in these islands was considered to be, when viewed from a Roman standpoint, unusually large; but it should be remembered that size is always more or less comparative, and as we have no plates or drawings to guide us when speaking of the very early horses, we can only surmise that they were really of very considerable bulk, because their descendants were decidedly large, and bore a very close resemblance to the Shire horse of the present day. It must, however, be recollected that the horse of a certain period is naturally moulded so as to be suitable to the requirements of that time; and the Great Britain of two thousand years ago was, of course, a vastly different country from the Great Britain as we now find it. The nation then was troubled and disturbed, and the majority of the inhabitants may be described as warriors. Book Types and Market Classes of Live Stock Classic Reprint

Download or read book Types and Market Classes of Live Stock Classic Reprint written by H. W. Vaughan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types and Market Classes, of Live Stock During the past eight years there has been added to the curriculum in most of our agricultural colleges a new course dealing with the types of farm animals, market demands, and market classes of live stock. More properly speaking, it has been inserted at the very beginning of the work in animal husbandry, forming, as it logically does, the foundation course in the study of that important branch of agriculture. This is a soundly practical study; the student is brought to a much clearer conception of values and a much better appreciation of live stock than was possible under the former system of teaching. Recognizing the need of a text on this subject which could be placed in the hands of students, the writer prepared and printed a loose-leaf edition which has been used at Ohio State University during the past three years. This met with favorable comment, and requests have been made that the material be put into book form. After careful revision and the addition of a number of illustrations, this is now attempted in the hope that students and teachers and the general reader as well may find such a book useful. The arrangement of the subject-matter corresponds to the order usually followed in teaching, but may be varied as desired, each section of the book - Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, and Horses - being complete in itself. The writer desires to express his indebtedness to numerous commission men, buyers for the packing houses, and others who have kindly given their assistance during his quests for information, and to numerous experiment station publications, particularly the series of excellent bulletins issued by the Illinois Station setting forth the results of their study of the Chicago and St. Louis markets. Acknowledgment of valued assistance is due my present co-workers, and also Professors C. S. Plumb and F. R. Marshall at Ohio State University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing at the turn of the century, Francis T. Underhill provided horse and carriage owners with a comprehensive guidebook that described how a well turned-out carriage should look and be handled. An expert in coaching and equipage, Underhill wrote with enthusiasm and a thorough knowledge of the subject, offering his readers a wealth of information about horses, harnesses, coaches, stables, and liveries, as well as useful "suggestions to the inexperienced." Republished now in its entirety, this delightfully entertaining volume depicts in more than 100 black-and-white captioned photographs of scores of vehicles: a "turned out" road coach, hooded gig, an elegant George IV phaëton, a Paris lady's chaise, hansome cab, landau, coupé d' Orsay, omnibus, depot wagon, buckboard, a smart "lady's country trap," and many more. In addition to elegant carriages, practical buggies, and cozy carts, this remarkable archive provides a fascinating visual commentary on nineteenth-century culture and life, recalled in vintage photographs of coachmen and grooms, stable and coachroom interiors as well as "night and dress clothing" for the properly accoutered horse. Reprinted from a rare original edition published at the height of the age of horse-drawn transportation, this authentic sourcebook will be welcomed by model builders, transportation buffs, artists in need of authentic period illustrations, and anyone interested in the bygone era of leisurely pre-automobile travel.
