Book excerpt: Becoming a parent for the first time can be a daunting task. To explore if the role of being a first-time parent affected marital satisfaction, in-depth interviews ranging from 60-90 minutes were conducted with eight married participants (four males and four females). Marital types (e.g. Traditional, Independent, and Separate), parenting styles (e.g. permissive, authoritative, and authoritarian), and maintenance strategies (e.g. social networks, positivity, and sharing tasks) were examined in this study. Married couples who espoused traditional marital roles reported having the greatest marital satisfaction. The majority of parents believed the best way to discipline their child was through verbal give-and-take, not controlling their child's decisions, and reaching an agreement on how to parent the child. Couples attributed their marital satisfaction to the presence of social networks, such as friends and family, positivity in communicating with one another, and sharing tasks like childcare responsibilities. The findings of this study supported Relational Dialectics Theory, which suggests that push-pull tensions must be managed in order to achieve a satisfactory relationship. Couples experienced dialectical contradictions between spending time together and time apart, between stability and change, and between revealing and concealing their concerns about the arrival of their first child. Recognizing the challenges and joys of being a first-time parent can lead couples who are contemplating starting a family to be better prepared to embark on the transition to parenthood. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for future reseatch are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined some of the factors that influence father involvement for first time parent s. These variables included: general or cultural attitudes of father involvement, personal expectations for father involvement, and level of satisfaction with the marriage. A secondary purpose was to examine factors that buffer the decline of marital satisfaction associated with the transition to parenthood. It was proposed that marital satisfaction was associated with having similar expectations for father involvement, having father involvement that met or exceeded personal expectations, and accurately perceiving spousal identity. A final purpose was to create a model of father invol vement, originally represented by the level of time, awareness, and support a father provides for his child. Ninety-six couples enrolled in two prenatal classes participated in this study. Both mothers and fathers were given nearly identical surveys for the prenatal (or the third trimester of pregnancy) and postnatal (when the target child was between 3 and 6 months old) phases of the study With a 29% attrition rate, the final sample consisted of68 couples. The results indicated that postnatal father involvement was predicted by the level of marital satisfaction and also by the personal expectations that both spouses have for father involvement. Results failed to support the hypotheses that father involvement would be significantly related to prenatal general attitudes of father involvement. However, there was some support that general (or cultural) attitudes change as a fun ction of personal experience for father s; the standard set for other fathers seems to be based from and conform to their own level of involvement. As expected, postnatal marital satisfaction for both spouses was strongly related to father involvement. Although postnatal marital satisfaction was slightly related to the similarity in spouses' expectations for father involvement, the exploratory analysis shows that spouses with high personal expectations for father involvement (during the prenatal phase) tend to experience high levels of postnatal marital satisfaction, regardless of similarity of expectations between spouses. There was a general trend for postnatal marital satisfaction to be high when father involvement met or exceeded personal expectations, and low when father involvement fell short of personal expectations. The exception is when expectations were high; spouses with high expectations tend to report high levels of postnatal marital satisfaction regardless of whether father involvement met, surpassed, or fell short of those expectations. Contrary to expectations, accurately perceiving spousal identity was not related to marital satisfaction. Implications are given.

Book excerpt: The current study focused on the transition to first-time parenthood as a period in development most likely to be sensitive for identifying salient dimensions of recalled parenting. Recall of parenting behaviors is linked to the emotional context in which parenting behaviors were experienced and consolidated in memories. The transition to parenthood is also suggested to be an emotionally-laden period associated with changes in mood and marital satisfaction and, therefore, might contribute to reevaluations of emotionally-laden past relationships and experiences. Wives and husbands (N = 160 couples) one year into first-time parenthood reported recall of parenting they experienced during adolescence using the PBI. A three-dimensional model of RP was found, identifying a Care dimensions and two other dimensions that distinguished between two types of perceptions of parental Overprotection (found in prior research) - Dependence and Control. A three-level hierarchical model using actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) was utilized to incorporate both wives' and husbands' experiences (termed actor- and partner-effects) and, therefore, accounted for the non-independence of their reports. Results indicated that husbands with higher levels of depression recalled their parents as promoting greater dependence on them. Having a spouse with higher levels of depression was associated with recall of parents as more dependence-promoting. Greater marital satisfaction was associated with recalling parents as more caring during adolescence. The more satisfied one's partner was in the marital relationship, the fewer dependence behaviors were recalled by the individual.

Given that family-of origin experiences are thought to lay the foundation for adults' experiences in their close interpersonal relationships, the purpose of the current study was to examine remembered parental rejection during childhood as a predictor of individual differences in trajectories of change in marital satisfaction across the transition to parenthood. Drawing upon the Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation perspective, marital aggression was considered as a mediating mechanism to better understand the process by which remembered rejection influences change in marital satisfaction. Additionally, the extent to which infant negative emotionality moderates the association between remembered parental rejection and both aggressive strategies to resolve conflict and change in marital satisfaction was examined. In an effort to extend theory and build upon previous research, both self- and partner-remembered parental rejection and aggressive conflict strategies were considered as predictors of change in marital satisfaction. Hypotheses were examined using data drawn from a study of family relationships across the transition to parenthood. Results demonstrated that there was significant variation around wives' but not husbands' trajectories of change in marital satisfaction across the transition to parenthood. Remembered parental rejection was not linked with change in wives' marital satisfaction across the transition to parenthood, independently or in conjunction with infant negative emotionality. In contrast, husbands' remembered maternal rejection was negatively associated with husband's marital satisfaction at six months postpartum, but only among husbands' whose infants were high on negative emotionality. Wives' remembered paternal rejection was negatively associated with husbands' marital satisfaction at six months postpartum. Infant negative emotionality was a significant negative predictor of wives' change in marital satisfaction across the transition to parenthood. There was no evidence of marital aggression as a mediating mechanism."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
