Book excerpt: Marital satisfaction is viewed as a socially constructed reality having a direct impact on the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of partners in a marriage. Just as marital satisfaction is vital to a couple's well-being, marital dissatisfaction can be distressing to a couple. Instances of research on relevant topics have been found in abundance in the west. However, this study is an attempt to expand the existing literature to the east and provide dovetail conclusions about the levels of marital satisfaction among couples in Pakistan. This study developed a validated screening scale with local norms called "The Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS)" that would provide appropriate guidelines to the mental health care professionals and marriage counselors for the treatment of dissatisfied married couples. This study explored twelve subscales i.e. In-laws relationship, Communication, Husband's Financial Status, Compromise, Understanding, Spouse Support, Self-Perception, Dual Earning, Mutual Understanding, Education of Partner, Sexual Satisfaction, & Gender Difference, which relates to overall marital satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Several years ago, two of my colleagues and I had the opportunity to interview Fritz Heider-perhaps the most influential theorist in the field of social psychology (Harvey, Ickes, & Kidd, 1976). During our interview, Heider affirmed a belief that had guided his career since the 1920s, the belief that the study of human relationships is the most important task in which social scientists can engage. Although many social scientists would profess to share this belief, it is nonetheless true that the study of human relationships has been one of the most neglected tasks in the history of the social sciences-including psychology. What Heider found in the 1920s-that most psychologists acknowledged the importance of studying human relationships but at the same time tended to focus their own research on more "tractable" topics such as memory and cognition-is still very much evident in the 1980s. Even within the more specific domain of social psychology, a majority of researchers still choose to address those hybrid topics ("social cognition," "social categorization and stereotyping," "person memory," etc. ) that relate most directly to traditional areas of psychological research. Still other researchers, while choosing to study such important interpersonal phenomena as altruism, aggression, conflict, and interpersonal attraction, tend to focus so exclusively on these isolated and abstracted phenomena that they fail to provide a more inclusive view of the relationships in which these phenomena occur.

MAP is a metaphor for a planned and systematic change effort for helping spouses chart and navigate toward desired individual and collective goals. A key component of the program, which is tailored to the corporate sector, is assistance to couples in forging a more productive and supportive work and family partnership that will help them achieve their marital ambitions. The program is built upon an explicit consideration of family-related values and is undergirded by a theoretically and empirically based conceptual model: the Value-Behavior Congruency Model. Although the enrichment program provides the organizing theme, the core of the book is directed toward providing theoretical and empirical support for the Congruency Model, and linking the development and implementation of the program with trends in corporate America today. Two data sets are used to test the critical assumptions that form the basis of the model. The first involves 48 married couples from two posts in the U.S. Army, where one or both spouses were members of the Army; the second involves a sample of 34 couples from a Fortune 500 corporation in the northeastern United States in which MAP was first field-tested. Taken together, the contents of this book represent an attempt to integrate theory, research, and practice in the development and grounding of the enrichment program. Although such attempts are recognized as important tasks in the behavioral and social sciences, segregation rather than integration of these three domains has been the rule rather than the exception in the literature. This volume should be especially relevant to the growing number of marital enrichment specialists who are looking for more theoretically and empirically grounded support programs, especially those that have been field tested in the expanding market of workplace programs for employees and their families. It should be a valuable resource for senior managers and human resource professionals in both the private and public sectors who want to strengthen the organizational support for employees and their families.
