Book Super Mario

Download or read book Super Mario written by Jeff Ryan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive story of the rise of Nintendo. In 1981, Nintendo of America was a one-year-old business already on the brink of failure. Its president, Mino Arakawa, was stuck with two thousand unsold arcade cabinets for a dud of a game (Radar Scope). So he hatched a plan. Back in Japan, a boyish, shaggy-haired staff artist named Shigeru Miyamoto designed a new game for the unsold cabinets featuring an angry gorilla and a small jumping man. Donkey Kong brought in $180 million in its first year alone and launched the career of a short, chubby plumber named Mario. Since then, Mario has starred in over two hundred games, generating profits in the billions. He is more recognizable than Mickey Mouse, yet he’s little more than a mustache in bib overalls. How did a mere smear of pixels gain such huge popularity? Super Mario tells the story behind the Nintendo games millions of us grew up with, explaining how a Japanese trading card company rose to dominate the fiercely competitive video-game industry.

Astrophysicist Adam Frank traces the question of alien life from the ancient Greeks to modern thinkers, and he demonstrates that recognizing the possibility of its existence might be the key to save us from climate change. With clarity and conviction, Light of the Stars asks the consequential question: What can the likely presence of life on other planets tell us about our own fate?

Book excerpt: In 1978 America is still licking its wounds from the Vietnam War, an impeached president and skyrocketing oil prices. The people of the country are suspicious, questioning their government at every turn, and it’s an environment allowing conspiracy theories to flourish. It shouldn’t be a surprise one of these theories parallels a long-standing enigma we typically laugh at when we see it – and we see it all too often. Specifically, we look in wonder at the people who not only have a complete ineptitude when using power tools, but we also fear for their lives when they do so. Ironically, we cringe and laugh, wondering if these people are from some other planet. Well, the answer is – they are. This is the scenario Jack Decker’s three high school friends are obsessed with when he returns to his home town after years away. When Jack appeases his friends and joins in, he does not realize the unexpected path will unearth mysteries within the Amish community, expose industrial espionage and even reveal corruption from the state governor! Middle America comedy, best friends conspiracy theory, middle America quest, adult sleuth quest adventure, hobo comedy, young sleuth coming of age, young sleuth investigation

Book Migrant Youth Transnational Families and the State

Download or read book Migrant Youth Transnational Families and the State written by Lauren Heidbrink and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, more than half a million migrant children journey from countries around the globe and enter the United States with no lawful immigration status; many of them have no parent or legal guardian to provide care and custody. Yet little is known about their experiences in a nation that may simultaneously shelter children while initiating proceedings to deport them, nor about their safety or well-being if repatriated. Migrant Youth, Transnational Families, and the State examines the draconian immigration policies that detain unaccompanied migrant children and draws on U.S. historical, political, legal, and institutional practices to contextualize the lives of children and youth as they move through federal detention facilities, immigration and family courts, federal foster care programs, and their communities across the United States and Central America. Through interviews with children and their families, attorneys, social workers, policy-makers, law enforcement, and diplomats, anthropologist Lauren Heidbrink foregrounds the voices of migrant children and youth who must navigate the legal and emotional terrain of U.S. immigration policy. Cast as victims by humanitarian organizations and delinquents by law enforcement, these unauthorized minors challenge Western constructions of child dependence and family structure. Heidbrink illuminates the enduring effects of immigration enforcement on its young charges, their families, and the state, ultimately questioning whose interests drive decisions about the care and custody of migrant youth.

Book Making Strangers Outsiders Aliens and Foreigners

Download or read book Making Strangers Outsiders Aliens and Foreigners written by Abbes Maazaoui and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on foreignness have increased substantially over the last two decades in response to what has been dubbed the migration/refugee crisis. Yet, they have focused on specific areas such as regions, periods, ethnic groups, and authors. Predicated on the belief that this so-called “twenty-first century problem” is in fact as old as humanity itself, this book analyzes cases based on both long-term historical perspectives and current occurrences from around the world. Bringing together an international group of scholars from Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America, it examines a variety of examples and strategies, mostly from world literatures, ranging from Spain’s failed experience with consolidation as a nation-state-type entity during the Golden Age of Castile, to Shakespeare’s rhetorical subversion of the language of fear and hate, to Mario Rigoni Stern’s random status at the unpredictable Italian-Austrian borders, to Lawrence Durrell’s ambivalent approach to noticing the physically visible other, to the French government’s ongoing criminalization of hospitality, to Sandra Cisneros’s attempt at straddling two countries and cultures while belonging to neither one, to the illusive legal limbo of the DREAMers in the United States. We are not born foreigners; we are made. The purpose of the book is to assert, as denoted by the title, this fundamental premise, that is, the making of strangers is the result of a deliberate and purposeful act that has social, political, and linguistic implications. The ultimate expression of this phenomenon is the compulsive labeling of people along artificial categories such as race, gender, religion, birthplace, or nationality. A corollary purpose of the book is to help shed light worldwide on one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: the place of “the other” amid fear-mongering and unabashedly contemptuous acts and rhetoric toward immigrants, refugees and all those excluded within because of race, gender, national origin, religion and ethnicity. As illustrated by the examples examined in this book, humans have certainly evolved in many areas; dealing with the “other” might not have been one of those. It is hoped that the book encourages reflection on how the arts, and especially world literatures, can help us navigate and think through the ever-present crisis: the place of the “stranger” among us.

Book LAPD CHRONICLES

Download or read book LAPD CHRONICLES written by Hank Foresta and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a seldom-told true story of some of the law enforcement heroes. They worked long and hard in incredibly dangerous and uncomfortable situations, fighting the war on drugs, which no one but them ever expected. They started before there was a declaration of war. From personal and professional experience, they knew that this country, its people, its institutions, its economy, and its leadership in the free world were in peril. They saw the growing menace to our kids, to our schools, and even to law enforcement. Someone had to fight back with uncommon valor and dedication. More than four thousand three hundred people have been killed in the last year and a half. Police stations have been bombed, and officers have been shot and killed in police facilities. Some police officials have been kidnapped, shot gangland style, tortured, and even beheaded. Police and government officials at the highest levels have been the object of assassination and, along with their bodyguards, shot and killed. In one city, thirteen people were shot and killed in one evening and left dead in the street. In another city, sixteen people, including a twelve-year-old girl, were shot. The government sent in the military in large numbers, but the killings continued.
