Book excerpt: Excerpt from Screw Propellers and Marine Propulsion The propelling screw is, in all probability, a very ancient contrivance. The date of its first application as an instrument of propulsion remains in oblivion, but it is said to have been known in China at a very early period. But it is in its connec tion with steam as a motive power to propel vessels that the following pages are chiefly devoted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Propellers A brief treatment is given of methods for determining the power required to propel a ship at a given speed, together with data for various types of ships and boats. It is believed that intelligent use of this material will give satisfactory results under ordinary conditions; the best results, expecially under extreme conditions, can be expected only by experienced designers who have specific information. All methods of designing ships and propellers are based, either explicitly or implicitly, on the theory of; mechanical similitude. The conclusions and methods of this theory may be stated briefly and used easily; a presentation of the theory is given at the end of the book for convenient reference. Book The Screw Propeller

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Screw Propeller: And Other Competing Instruments for Marine Propulsion Some thirty-two years ago, when engaged in putting forth the Manual of Marine Engineering, I could not find a single book on the Screw Propeller, or any text book containing such information on it as would enable a draughtsman to get out the leading dimensions, and much less to make a complete design of a screw suitable for any particular ship and conditions. At that time John Bourne's admirable book on the Screw Propeller was not only out of print, but out of date, and I fear no engineer could at any time have designed a screw which would give satisfactory results from what was contained in it. It was, however, many years after that I first saw his work, and my wonder then, as now, is that such a book was allowed to disappear, seeing how much of interest it contained. But perhaps the strongest comment on the knowledge of the screw propeller at that time is in the admission of the then engineer-in-chief of the British Navy, that he had settled the design of those for so very important a ship as the Iris, intended to be the fastest ship in the Navy, by copying that of hms. Himalaya, a ship built in 1854, with the result that the British Admiralty, with all its knowledge and opportunities, with all its records of tests and trials, perpetrated a blunder never equalled in the history of steam navigation, although in the mercantile marine there had been not a few mistakes. But even in modern times, notwithstanding the better knowledge and the aid of tank experiments, our best men do sometimes fail to achieve success, but the magnitude of the failure is inconsiderable compared with that of the Iris. In the Manual of Marine Engineering I attempted to supply the wants of designers by giving a rule or formula for each important dimension, generally based on scientific reasons, and always capable of giving results agreeable with the best and most successful practice. Book Screw Propellers

Download or read book Screw Propellers written by Charles W. Dyson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Screw Propellers: And Estimation of Power for Propulsion of Ships; Also Air-Ship Propellers John bourne, in his Treatise on the Screw Propeller, published in 1867, states that the screw propeller is, in all probability, a very ancient contrivance. In China it is said to have been known for ages; but in European countries the idea of a screw propeller appears to have been derived either from the windmill or smoke-jack, or from the screw of Archimedes, an instrument much used in some countries for raising water. Seaton, in his work on screw propellers, traces its develop ment from the time when man first used his hands as paddles, through the pulling oar and the scullin g oar, and the modified application of the latter in the form of the screw propeller. Download or read book History of Propellers and Steam Navigation written by Robert Macfarlane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Propellers and Steam Navigation: With Biographical Sketches of the Early Inventors Dr. Papin, a Frenchman, Captain Savery, and the Marquis of Worcester, preposed to propel vessels by steam power ap plied in some way to paddles, but the testimony which is left to posterity of their contrivances for that purpose, is so um satisfactory and vague that little can be made out of it. In 1726, a Dr. John Allen published a work in London in which he preposed to propel a vessel by having a horizon tal pipe Open at the stern, into which air or water was to be forced, to propel the boat forward by its reaction. The Doctor tried his scheme on a boat upon a canal, and he states that if steam was used as a power, he had no doubt but it could be moved at the rate of three miles per hour. Book A Practical Treatise of Modern Screw Propulsion Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Practical Treatise of Modern Screw Propulsion Classic Reprint written by Nicholas Procter Burgh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise of Modern Screw-Propulsion T the request of Mr. N. P. Burgh, I agreed to write a short introduction to a new work he was about to write on Modern screw-propulsion. It was with some reluctance I acceded to his request; but, on consideration of the great pains and trouble that gentle man has bestowed on his work on Marine Engineering, collecting some of the best examples of modern marine engines, in having them illustrated in the most clear and correct manner, as well as combining in the body of the work numerous wood-cuts of details of construction peculiar to different makers, I felt sure the main importance of his publication would depend more on the excellence of its illustrations than the few remarks which I might have to offer on the subject. After all, the best and most useful information for an engineer, is that which relates to the different views and mode of construction carried out by the prominent manufacturing engineers, who have devoted the best part of their lives and labours in perfecting an especial branch of mechanical study. Those, therefore, who wish for information on the various forms and construction, of the screw-propeller, I would recommend rather to examine, and carefully to compare, the Drawings of the Screws in this work, and results of different vessels, more particularly those of the Admiralty, than to look for anything that is new in this introductory account of the history, various forms, and adaptations of the screw-propeller, which I have contributed to the present work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resistance and Propulsion of Ships In the development of such methods the purpose has been to supply plain paths along which the student may pro ceed step by step from the initial conditions to the desired results, and to arrange the method in such a way as shall con duce to the most intelligent application of engineering judg ment and experience. In the design of screw-propellers especially, where the number of controlling conditions is necessarily large, the purpose has been to present a mode of solution in which the most important controlling conditions are represented in the formulae, and in which the determina tion of the numerical values of these representatives by auxiliary computation, estimate, or assumption is forced upon the attention of the student in such a way as to call at each step for a definite act of engineering judgment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of the Airplane Our tables made the designing of the wings an easy matter, and as screw propellers are simply wings traveling in a spiral course, we anticipated no trouble from this source. We had thought oft getting the theory of the screw-propeller from the marine engineers, and then. By applying our tables Of air-pressures to their formulas, Of designing air-propel lers suitable for our purpose. But so far as we could learn, the marine engineers possessed only empirical formulas, and the exact action Of the screw-propeller.
