Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For over 200 years, artists have been inspired to capture the beauty, violence, poetry and transformative power of the sea in American life. Oceans play a key role in American society no matter where we live, and the sea continues to inspire painters today to capture its mystery and power. In American Waters reveals that marine painting is so much more than ship portraits. In this exhibition, visitors will also discover the sea as an expansive way to reflect on American culture and environment, learn how coastal and maritime symbols moved inland across the United States, and question what it means to be "in American waters." Be transported across time and water on the wave of a diverse range of modern and historical artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, Amy Sherald, Kay WalkingStick, Norman Rockwell, Hale Woodruff, Paul Cadmus, Thomas Hart Benton, Jacob Lawrence, Valerie Hegarty, Stuart Davis, and many others"--Publisher's website

Download or read book Thomas Chambers written by Kathleen A. Foster and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labeled as a traveling American folk artist when he was rediscovered in the mid-20th century, the mysterious Thomas Chambers here receives a fresh and creative reassessment. Although his distinctive sea- and landscapes appear in many American collections, little is known about this English-born painter, who arrived in New Orleans in 1832 and disappeared from record in the mid-1860s, leaving many paintings that later resurfaced in rural New York and Massachusetts. In this richly illustrated work, Kathleen A. Foster shows, however, that far from being simply an itinerant painter of folk art, Chambers actually enjoyed a professional, even entrepreneurial, relationship to the art world. Foster performs close studies of Chambers's known works, his stylistic relationship to his brother (English marine painter George Chambers), and a newly discovered American auction record of 1845. Chambers, she argues, provided a popular landscape art for a middle class of mixed cosmopolitan and folk tastes. Bringing "fancy" painting to this new constituency, Chambers worked outside academic circles, drawing astutely from popular culture. In the 20th century, his rediscovery as "America's first modern" paid tribute to his independent spirit and decorative panache. Download or read book Expression and Meaning written by Sam Hunter and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In washes of watercolor and slathers of oil paint, John Marin fixed images of the boundless energy of life itself in marine paintings that resonate today with the same vitality and intensity as when he created them. At the age of 44, in the summer of 1914, the great American modernist moved to the coast of Maine, where he lived for the rest of his life. In Marin's transcendental pursuit to capture the energy of Maine's coastal environment he created paintings that express the meaning beneath the force.
