Book The Geophysics of the Pacific Ocean Basin and Its Margin

Download or read book The Geophysics of the Pacific Ocean Basin and Its Margin written by George Prior Woollard and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1976 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 19. The papers included in this volume were originally presented at the International Woollard Symposium held at the Kahala Hilton Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 8 through December 10, 1974. The symposium honored Professor George P. Woollard on the occasion of his 66th birthday. It was cosponsored by the University of Hawaii, where Professor Woollard is Director of the University of Hawaii's Institute of Geophysics, by the U.S. Geodynamics Committee, by the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics of the International Council of Scientific Unions, and by the following Sponsoring and Organizing Committee: Philip H. Abelson; L. Thomas Aldrich; Orson L. Anderson; William E. Bonini; Edward C. Bullard; Ramon R. Cabre; S.J.R.M. Demenitskaya; Charles L. Drake; John I. Ewing; Maurice Ewing (Deceased); Richard A. Geyer; Alberto A. Giesecke; Wytze Gorter (Chancellor, University of Hawaii at Manoa); Anton L. Hales; John Brackett Hersey; Everett Dale Jackson; Gordon A. Macdonald; Henry W. Menard, Jr.; Robert P. Meyer; Julio Monges-Caldera; Jack E. Oliver; Frank Press; Russell W. Raitt; Donald A. Rice; George H. Sutton; Manik Talwani; G. B. Udintsev; Seiya Uyeda; Tjeerd H. van Andel; J. Tuzo Wilson; J. Lamar Worzel. The Organizing Committee set the theme and scope of the meeting: the symposium was to explore the edge of knowledge, in those fields of science that during the past decade have been the principal concern of Professor Woollard and his associates and students, of the Pacific Ocean basin and its margin. A Program Committee was charged with inviting papers from internationally known scientists, for the following sessions: Gravity and Geodesy Seismology Magnetism Marine Geology and Tectonics Volcanology and Petrology Tectonophysics.

Book Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province

Download or read book Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province written by James L. Bischoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep-sea manganese nodules, once an obscure scientific curios ity, have, in the brief span of two decades, become a potential mineral resource of major importance. Nodules that cover the sea floor of the tropical North Pacific may represent a vast ore de posit of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Modern technology has apparently surmounted the incredible problem of recovering nodules in water depths of 5000 meters and the extraction of metals from the complex chemical nodule matrix is a reality. Both the recovery and the extraction appear to be economically feasible. Exploitation of this resource is, however, hindered more by the lack of an international legal structure allowing for recognition of mining sites and exploitation rights, than by any other factor. Often, when a mineral deposit becomes identified as an ex ploitable resource, scientific study burgeons. Interest in the nature and genesis of the deposit increases and much is learned from large scale exploration. The case is self evident for petrol eum and ore deposits on land. The study of manganese nodules is just now entering this phase. What was the esoteric field of a few scientists has become the subject of active exploration and research by most of the industrialized nations. Unfortunately for our general understanding of manganese nodules, exploration results remain largely proprietary. However, scientific study has greatly increased and the results are becoming widely available.

Book Accretionary Prisms and Convergent Margin Tectonics in the Northwest Pacific Basin

Download or read book Accretionary Prisms and Convergent Margin Tectonics in the Northwest Pacific Basin written by Yujiro Ogawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accretionary prisms in convergent margins are natural laboratories for exploring initial orogenic processes and mountain building episodes. They are also an important component of continental growth both vertically and laterally. Accretionary prisms are seismically highly active and their internal deformation via megathrusting and out-of-sequence faulting are a big concern for earthquake and tsunami damage in many coastal cities around the Pacific Rim. The geometries and structures of modern accretionary prisms have been well imaged seismically and through deep drilling projects of the Ocean Drilling Program (and recently IODP) during the last 15 years. Better understanding of the spatial distribution and temporal progression of accretionary prism deformation, structural and hydrologic evolution of the décollement zone (tectonic interface between the subducting slab and the upper plate), chemical gradients and fluid flow paths within accretionary prisms, contrasting stratigraphic and deformational framework along-strike in accretionary prisms, and the distribution and ecosystems of biological communities in accretionary prism settings is most important in interpreting the evolution of ancient complex sedimentary terrains and orogenic belts in terms of subduction-related processes. This book is a collection of interdisciplinary papers documenting the geological, geophysical, geochemical, and paleontological features of modern accretionay prisms and trenches in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, based on many submersible dive cruises, ODP drilling projects, and geophysical surveys during the last 10 years. It also includes several papers presenting the results of systematic integrated studies of recent to ancient on-land accretionary prisms in comparison to modern analogues. The individual chapters are data and image rich, providing a major resource of information and knowledge from these critical components of convergent margins for researchers, faculty members, and graduate and undergraduate students. As such, the book will be a major and unique contribution in the broad fields of global tectonics, geodynamics, marine geology and geophysics, and structural geology and sedimentology.
