The framework and indicators were field-tested in 18 sites around the world, and results of these pilots were incorporated into the guidebook. Published as a result of a 4-year partnership of IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas-Marine, World Wildlife Fund, and the NOAA National Ocean Service International Program Office.

Book Canada s Oceans

Download or read book Canada s Oceans written by Canada. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and published by Affaires étrangères et commerce international. This book was released on 1999 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, growth in Canada's oceans sector has resulted in increased pressures on the ocean environment. In many areas, the biodiversity and ecological integrity of marine ecosystems are being threatened. There is a need to proactively conserve, restore, and protect marine ecosystem functions, species, and habitats for future generations. This document discusses Canada's Oceans Act and other initiatives such as the National System of Marine Protected Areas, and Programmes of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities. It looks at marine resource management, and at other factors that affect our oceans such as shipping and climate change. Includes selected readings and a list of web sites.

Book Sea to Sea to Sea

Download or read book Sea to Sea to Sea written by Parks Canada and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Marine Conservation Areas System Plan is an important step in the process of creating a finite network of national marine conservation areas. The plan sets out an approach for the system's design in which Canada's three bordering oceans and the Great Lakes have been divided into 29 distinct marine regions, with a long-term goal of having a national marine conservation area within each region. The plan also attempts to portray each marine region with descriptions of its wildlife, marine and coastal environments, and current status of conservation areas in the region. The appendix includes a glossary and a list of marine-associated species assigned a status by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada.

Book Marine Conservation Ecology

Download or read book Marine Conservation Ecology written by John Roff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major textbook provides a broad coverage of the ecological foundations of marine conservation, including the rationale, importance and practicalities of various approaches to marine conservation and management. The scope of the book encompasses an understanding of the elements of marine biodiversity - from global to local levels - threats to marine biodiversity, and the structure and function of marine environments as related to conservation issues. The authors describe the potential approaches, initiatives and various options for conservation, from the genetic to the species, community and ecosystem levels in marine environments. They explore methods for identifying the units of conservation, and the development of defensible frameworks for marine conservation. They describe planning of ecologically integrated conservation strategies, including decision-making on size, boundaries, numbers and connectivity of protected area networks. The book also addresses relationships between fisheries and biodiversity, novel methods for conservation planning in the coastal zone and the evaluation of conservation initiatives.

Book Key Elements in the Development of a Hierarchical Marine Ecological Classification System to Support Ecosystem Approaches to Management in Pacific Canada

Download or read book Key Elements in the Development of a Hierarchical Marine Ecological Classification System to Support Ecosystem Approaches to Management in Pacific Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has identified twelve major biogeographic units for Canada's three oceans (four in the Pacific, five in the Arctic, and three in the Atlantic), which represent high-level spatial units that can be scaled-down (or scaled-up) into smaller (larger) units that are ecologically meaningful. The key elements of a framework to subdivide the four major bioregions in Pacific Canada marine waters into ecologically meaningful sub-bioregion scale units were reviewed. The advice and guidance on the development of a biogeographic framework is intended to help inform Ecosystem Approaches to Management (EAM) of marine biodiversity including fisheries resources, the establishment of a network of bioregional marine protected areas (MPAs) in Pacific Region, and contribute to coastal zone management and planning activities at local scales in Pacific Canada marine waters.--Includes text from document.
