Book Arab Women s Activism and Socio Political Transformation

Download or read book Arab Women s Activism and Socio Political Transformation written by Sahar Khamis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates how Arab women have been engaging in three ongoing, parallel struggles, before, during, and after the Arab Spring, on three levels, namely: the political struggle to pave the road for democracy, freedom, and reform; the social struggle to achieve gender equality and fight all forms of injustice and discrimination against women; and the legal struggle to chart new laws which can safeguard both the political and the social gains. The contributors argue that while the political upheavals were oftentimes more prevalent and visible, they should not overshadow the parallel social and legal revolutions which are equally important, due to their long-term impacts on the region. The chapters shed light on the intersections, overlaps and divergences between these simultaneous, continuous gendered struggles and unpacks their complexities and multiple implications, locally, regionally, and internationally, across different countries and through different phases.

Book Between Violence Vulnerability Resilience and Resistance

Download or read book Between Violence Vulnerability Resilience and Resistance written by Rand El Zein and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are the structures of power and the notion of agency among Syrian women during the recent Syrian conflict connected? To explore this matter, Rand El Zein investigates gender politics around displacement, conflict, the body, and the nation. In doing so, she outstandingly reconciles critical media theory as myriad and productive with the theoretical concepts on subjectivity, power, performativity, neoliberalism, and humanitarian governance. The book examines how the Arab television news discursively represented the experiences of Syrian women during the conflict in relation to the four main concepts: violence, vulnerability, resilience, and resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early medieval women exercised public roles, rights, and responsibilities. Women contributed through their labor to the welfare of the community. Women played an important part in public affairs. They practiced birth control through abortion and infanticide. Women committed crimes and were indicted. They owned property and administered estates. The drive toward economic growth and expansion abroad rested on the capacity of women to staff and manage economic endeavors at home. In the later Middle Ages, the social position of women altered significantly, and the reasons why the role of women in society tended to become more restrictive are examined in these essays.

Book Getting Married Classic Reprint

Download or read book Getting Married Classic Reprint written by Bernard Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting Married Now most laws are, and all laws ought to be, stronger than the strongest individual. Certam the marriage law is. The only people who successfully evade it are those who actually avail themselves of its shelter by pre tending to he married when they are not, and by Bohe mians who have no position to lose and no career to be closed. In every other case open violation of the mar riage laws means either downright ruin or such inconve niemce and disablement as a prudent man or woman would get married ten times over rather than face. And these disablements and inconveniences are not even the price of freedom; for, as Brieux has shewn so convinc ingly in Les Hannetons, an avowedly illicit union is often found in practice to be as tyrannical and as hard to es cape from as the worst legal one. Book From the Parlor to the Altar

Download or read book From the Parlor to the Altar written by Zachary Chastain and published by . This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're all here because of people who met and fell in love in the past! In the 1800s, most young men and women were bound by powerful traditions of family, church, and society that limited their choices in romance and marriage. As an economic and community-building institution marriage options were traditionally controlled by the older generation. Marriages were often arranged by families, and the bride and groom's personal feelings for each other were much less important than they are today. But as in so many other ways. America was a new and more open society. Communities of people from different and diverse backgrounds were established in a new land, and young people came together in a free, more open environment. Romantic love flourished in the America of the 1800s as it never had before, with a whole variety of courting and marriage customs, many of which we still cherish today. Book jacket.
