Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Douai was one of the wealthiest cloth towns of Flanders, and it left an enormous archive documenting the personal financial affairs of its citizens—wills, marriage agreements, business contracts, and records of court disputes over property rights of all kinds. Based on extensive research in this archive, this book reveals how these documents were produced in a centuries-long effort to regulate—and ultimately to redefine—property and gender relations. At the center of the transformation was a shift from a marital property regime based on custom to one based on contract. In the former, a widow typically inherited her husband's property; in the latter, she shared it with or simply held it for his family or offspring. Howell asks why the law changed as it did and assesses the law's effects on both social and gender meanings but she insists that the reform did not originate in general dissatisfaction with custom or a desire to disempower widows. Instead, it was born in a complex economic, social and cultural history during which Douaisiens gradually came to think about both property and gender in new ways.

Book Satiric Advice on Women and Marriage

Download or read book Satiric Advice on Women and Marriage written by Warren S. Smith and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-02-24 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advice on sex and marriage in the literature of antiquity and the middle ages typically stressed the negative: from stereotypes of nagging wives and cheating husbands to nightmarish visions of women empowered through marriage. Satiric Advice on Women and Marriage brings together the leading scholars of this fascinating body of literature. Their essays examine a variety of ancient and early medieval writers' cautionary and often eccentric marital satire beginning with Plautus in the third century B.C.E. through Chaucer (the only non-Latin author studied). The volume demonstrates the continuity in the Latin tradition which taps into the fear of marriage and intimacy shared by ancient ascetics (Lucretius), satirists (Juvenal), comic novelists (Apuleius), and by subsequent Christian writers starting with Tertullian and Jerome, who freely used these ancient sources for their own purposes, including propaganda for recruiting a celibate clergy and the promotion of detachment and asceticism as Christian ideals. Warren S. Smith is Professor of Classical Languages at the University of New Mexico.

Book Marriage on Trial

Download or read book Marriage on Trial written by Ziba Mir-Hosseini and published by I.B. Tauris. This book was released on 1997-12-31 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the resurgence of Islam as a social and political force, debates over family law reveal the struggle between the forces of traditionalism and modernism. The disparate tendencies within so-called Islamic fundamentalism have in commmon the desire to re-institute Shari'a law, which they regard as the last bastion of the Islamic ideal of social relations. Yet very little is known of the ways in which the Shari'a actually operates in today's Muslim societies. Mir-Hosseini focuses on the dynamics of marriage and its breakdown, as well as the way in which litigants manipulate the law in order to resolve marital disputes and child custody cases. Taking an inter-disciplinaryand approach which straddles law, anthropology, sociology and women's studies, Mir-Hosseini shows how women may turn even the most patriarchal elements of Islamic law to their advantage and achieve their personal marital aims.

Book Eheschliessungen Im Europa Des 18 und 19 Jahrhunderts

Download or read book Eheschliessungen Im Europa Des 18 und 19 Jahrhunderts written by Christophe Duhamelle and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Family in Late Antiquity

Download or read book The Family in Late Antiquity written by Geoffrey Nathan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Family in Late Antiquity offers a challenging, well-argued and coherent study of the family in the late Roman world and the influence of the emerging Christian religion on its structure and value. Before the Roman Empire's political disintegration in the west, enormous political, religious and cultural changes took place in the period of late antiquity. This book is the first comprehensive study of the family in the later Roman Empire, from approximately 300 AD to 550 AD. Geoffrey Nathan analyses the classical Roman family as well as early Christian notions of this most basic unit of social organisation. Using these models as a contextual backdrop, he then explores marriage, children, domestic servitude, and other familial institutions in late antiquity. He brings together a diverse collection of sources, transcending traditional studies that have centred on the legal record.
