Book The Origins of the German Principalities 1100 1350

Download or read book The Origins of the German Principalities 1100 1350 written by Graham A. Loud and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of medieval Germany is still rarely studied in the English-speaking world. This collection of essays by distinguished German historians examines one of most important themes of German medieval history, the development of the local principalities. These became the dominant governmental institutions of the late medieval Reich, whose nominal monarchs needed to work with the princes if they were to possess any effective authority. Previous scholarship in English has tended to look at medieval Germany primarily in terms of the struggles and eventual decline of monarchical authority during the Salian and Staufen eras – in other words, at the "failure" of a centralised monarchy. Today, the federalised nature of late medieval and early modern Germany seems a more natural and understandable phenomenon than it did during previous eras when state-building appeared to be the natural and inevitable process of historical development, and any deviation from the path towards a centralised state seemed to be an aberration. In addition, by looking at the origins and consolidation of the principalities, the book also brings an English audience into contact with the modern German tradition of regional history (Landesgeschichte). These path-breaking essays open a vista into the richness and complexity of German medieval history.

Book And Their Children After Them

Download or read book And Their Children After Them written by Dale Maharidge and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction in 1990 In And Their Children After Them, the writer/photographer team Dale Maharidge and Michael Williamson return to the land and families captured in James Agee and Walker Evans’s inimitable Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, extending the project of conscience and chronicling the traumatic decline of King Cotton. With this continuation of Agee and Evans’s project, Maharidge and Williamson not only uncover some surprising historical secrets relating to the families and to Agee himself, but also effectively lay to rest Agee’s fear that his work, from lack of reverence or resilience, would be but another offense to the humanity of its subjects. Williamson’s ninety-part photo essay includes updates alongside Evans’s classic originals. Maharidge and Williamson’s work in And Their Children After Them was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction when it was first published in 1990.

Book excerpt: The classic sci-fi story collection features eleven tales of outer space adventure from one of the genre’s greatest talents—“a precursor to Douglas Adams” (The New York Times). In “Fool’s Mate,” a stalemate in deep space is broken by a crazy man and a set of fake orders. A new longevity drug may lead to an untimely end for its inventor in “Forever.” And in “Prospector’s Special,” a lone explorer searches the deserts of Venus in search of unfathomable treasure. In these and eight other stories, Robert Sheckley reaffirms his reputation as a master storyteller and the wittiest satirist working in science fiction. Shards of Space also includes “The Girls and Nugent Miller,” “Meeting of the Minds,” “Potential,” “Subsistence Level,” “The Slow Season,” “Alone at Last,” “The Sweeper of Loray,” and “The Special Exhibit.”

  • Author : Bernd Stöver
  • Publisher : C.H.Beck

  • Pages : 125 pages

Download or read book Berlin written by Bernd Stöver and published by C.H.Beck. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Daniel Friedrich Sturm, Die Welt
