Download or read book Marginal Land Utilization and Potential Kent County New Brunswick written by Maurice Mandale and published by Lands Directorate, Environment Canada. This book was released on 1984 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The agricultural use of Canada's land varies greatly from region to region in its intensity, vitality and economic prospects. During the past few decades there have been major shifts in agricultural land use in Canada; a significant element has been the abandonment of large areas of land formerly in agriculture, principally in eastern Canada (McCuaig and Manning, 1982). Bibliographic research by the Lands Directorate has shown considerable concern related to the abandonment of farmland, the decline of entire regions as much of the population leaves, and the failure to adapt to new methods of using and managing the land resource in extensive rural areas of eastern Canada (Beattie, Bond and Manning, 1981)"--Preface.
Download or read book Land Use Changes in Europe written by F.M. Brouwer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patterns of land use that have evolved in Europe reflect the boundaries set by the natural environment and socio-economic responses to the needs of the population. Over the centuries man has been able to overcome increasingly the constraints placed on land use by the natural environment through the development of new technologies and innovations, driven by an increasing population and rising material expectations. However, activities are still ultimately constrained by natural limitations such as climatic characteristics and associated edaphic and vegetational features. A major problem for land management, in its broadest sense, can be a reluctance to foresee the consequent ecological changes. This means that mitigating strategies will not be implemented in time to prevent environmental degradation and social hardship, although in many parts of Europe, over some centuries, demands have been met in a sustainable way, by sound, prudent and temperate expectations that have dictated management regimes. The management of land in Europe has always been a complex challenge: land is the primary, though finite resource. DeciSions regarding the use of land and manipulation of ecosystem dynamics today may affect the long-term primary productivity of the resource. Decisions to change land use may be virtually irreversible; urbanization is an illustration of the influence of population density on the land resource.

Download or read book The Impacts on Land Use of CMHC Municipal Infrastructure Assistance 1961 to 1980 written by Paul D. Bircham and published by Lands Directorate, Environment Canada. This book was released on 1984 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The key issue examined is the impact of CMHC infrastructure assistance on the nature, form, and location of development vis-a-vis the rural land resource. Assessment of impact includes both financial leverage (CMHC funding causing infrastructure development to occur) and on-the-ground leverage (the CMHC funded infrastructure influencing the form and location of urban development). This evaluation is from the point of view of impacts on the use and management of the land resource under the guidelines of the Federal Policy on Land Use (Canada/Government of Canada, 1981)"--Executive Summary, p. v.

Environment Canada. This book was released on 1984 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper reports on a study of land use change on wetlands within a portion of British Columbia's, Southwestern Fraser Lowland. Wetlands were identified on the basis of soil and habitat characteristics. A map of these wetland areas was superimposed on land use maps for 1967 and 1982 to obtain change data"--Abstract.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The agriculture-forest interface is defined as the general boundary zone separating the agricultural ecumene from forest. A variety of land uses in addition to farming and forestry can exist in such areas: recreation, energy and mineral development, wildlife, watershed protection. This exploratory paper reviews, by province, the principal geographic areas of substantial recent changes in land use at the agriculture-forest interface and discusses the land allocation and management issues associated with each area"--Abstract.

Historical background on periodical reviews of use and function of marine lands and facilities is provided to further understand how complexities relating to marine facilities management and administration evolved. The roles of the individual agencies have been examined as well as administrative structure and management process for marine lands. The last section of this document comprises a synthesis of facts, trends, issues, concluding with the problems that still need resolution"--Abstract.

Download or read book State of the Environment in the Atlantic Region written by Peter B. Eaton and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Environment Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1994 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview of the environment of the Atlantic Provinces at a particular time. The report identifies problem areas, describes important conditions and trends, and outlines the direction in which the region is headed environmentally. The central theme of the report is the relationship between human activities and environmental quality, human health, and the economy. The concept of sustainability is explored, both in terms of ecosystem sustainability, and the long-term sustainability of the current use of the environment and its resources. The report describes the environmental resource base, including ecozones, demographics, air, water, land, and wildlife; the stresses, including acid rain, dioxins and furans, wildlife and fish habitat, and environmental impact assessment; and a diagnosis for sustained use of air, water, land, special places and species, and energy. A glossary is included.
