Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most of their jobs disappear, how do communities survive? In the hard-hit area explored in this book - the Bonavista Peninsula, on the island of Newfoundland - many residents transitioned into "everyday" entrepreneurs such as restauranteurs. Rural Revival explains how these business owners developed a place rich in "entrepreneurial capital." The author draws on six years of ethnographic fieldwork in the area: observations from listening, watching and learning with people in their everyday settings. Camera work opened doors to people's ventures and their lives. The many photographs in this book bring you deeply into a sense of presence among the people and their natural settings. To interpret the findings from fieldwork, the author draws on rural sociology and economic anthropology. He shows how people transformed the value of once-neglected things in the "house economy" into assets for tourists, leaving the "market economy." He uses theories of "cross-sector partnerships" to show the ways in which regional development is tough to sustain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using historical and ethnographic records, an attempt is made to reconstruct the traditional economic and social patterns of the Inuit of the Mackenzie Delta and Beaufort Sea coast, focussing on the Kittegaryumiut of the East Channel area. Two seasons of archaeological work at the large village of Kittigazuit, and at smaller related sites, are reported. The cultural pattern and way of life reconstructed for the nineteenth century Kittegaryumiut appears to extend at least 500 years into the past, and to be centred on the hunting of beluga in a unique natural trap.

Book Rural Transformation and Newfoundland and Labrador Diaspora

Download or read book Rural Transformation and Newfoundland and Labrador Diaspora written by Amarjit Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is endorsed by Dr. Clar Doyle in his preface to this book. Dr. Doyle is very well known locally. This book is about the contemporary life of grandparents in Newfoundland and Labrador – a geographically isolated and culturally unique rural region of Canada. The book can be used for courses in the areas of critical social work, family studies, gerontology, nursing, rural development, critical pedagogy, and diaspora studies. Clar Doyle, Professor of Education, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and member of the Founding Scholars Advisory Board, The Paulo and Nita Freire International Project for Critical Pedagogy. “This book offers a platform not only to look in on the lives of vital grandparents but paints, in broad strokes, a mural of coming, changing, as well as challenging cultural and social settings.... In what the astute editors ....call “small nuanced studies” we find telling narratives of generational connections in the face of changing and challenging odds....This book does a great service to the concept of diaspora, as well as to the changing nature of that concept... This book elevates the status of grandparents by positioning them as vital members of a complex and challenging society where their skills, gifts, and sheer presence are most formative.... As is strongly advocated in this book, it is essential that educators, curriculum developers, and teachers appreciate the place of grandparents in their students’ lives.”

Book Community State and Market on the North Atlantic Rim

Download or read book Community State and Market on the North Atlantic Rim written by Richard Apostle and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1998-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of Northern Norway and Atlantic Canada, two regions experiencing a severe crisis due to overexploitation of fisheries resources. The work of a group of researchers from Canada, Norway, and the United States, it examines the implications of common market integration, privatized resource management, and small business development policies for fishery-dependent communities in terms of long-term sustainability and participatory democracy. The book is broken into three sections: an examination of the economic and institutional history of the fisheries in Norway and Atlantic Canada, a study of the regulatory regimes used in the fisheries of these two regions, and an analysis of reactions in three communities, two in Canada and one in Norway, to the decline and collapse of fish stocks. Comparative, multidisciplinary, and multinational in approach, it is a major contribution to the literature on fishing regulations, the role of the state, and resource development in the North Atlantic.
