Book Mare Island Cemetery Volume Two

Download or read book Mare Island Cemetery Volume Two written by Peggy O'Drain and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret (Peggy) O'Drain lives in Richmond, California, and a retired State employee. She was a longtime tour guide and volunteer with Mare Island Historic Park Foundation. Discovery of the aging, neglected cemetery at Mare Island offered the perfect opportunity to combine a life-long interest in all things historical with an undeniable attraction to old burial grounds. Her goal is to preserve a place in history for Mare Island, with stories of those who will forever remain on Mare Island. Joyce Giles (co-author) lives in Vallejo, California, a former employee of Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and long time volunteer with Mare Island Historic Park Foundation as tour guide, docent, and manager of Mare Island Museum. She assisted Peggy in the first publication about the cemetery and after several years of seeing the cemetery in neglected stage, wanted to update the previous publication to include Section A (officer burials), and also an afterward showing the rebirth with new irrigation, fencing, cleaned tombstones, and clean up after the fires of 2019, and also an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author brings to life the stories beneath the tombstones of one of the oldest naval cemeteries in the United States. While the first burial was in 1856, the cemetery was not declared a naval cemetery until 1858, and was closed in 1921, with a few burials of officers allowed later by pre-arrangement. These stories shared by the author do not only offer glimpses of individual lives during a specific phase of American history but offer insight into an often turbulent, shifting time of change in naval history during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Book excerpt: “Fans of hauntings and ghost stories who are heading towards San Francisco will love this comprehensive guide to the Bay Area’s most eerie spots.” —Fabuloustravel.com Ghost-hunting hobbyist Jeff Dwyer has devised a guide that allows the phantom-seeker in all of us to add spirit sleuthing to our list of typical tourist activities. Ghost Hunter’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area highlights more than one hundred haunted spots in and around San Francisco, all accessible to the public, where you can research and organize your own ghost hunt. Whether readers visit familiar haunts such as Alcatraz, Angel Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, or lesser-known locations such as the USS Hornet, the Old Bodega Schoolhouse, or the First and Last Chance Saloon, all are sure to encounter places and consider possibilities unexplored by the average visitor. With advice on what to do with a ghost, what to do after the ghost hunt, and other telekinetic tidbits, this guide encourages travelers to be attentive and imaginative, willing to take that extra spirit-sighting step. For the curious armchair traveler, it is lively twist on Bay Area history and landmarks. “While sometimes scary, [the ghost stories] more often serve as reminders of the sometimes quirky, and oftentimes tragically haunting, history of the people of California.” —The Reporter (Vacaville, CA) “I thought I knew everything about the wine country, but I apparently overlooked the protoplasmic ‘walk by night’ world.” —Mick Winter, author of The Napa Valley Book

The title is well known through out the area and most know it refers to that group and anyone who descended from them. Volume two covers the original Old Settlers that came whose last names begin with D-R and follows each one of their descendants through every generation down to the current living generations. It includes photographs, family stories, articles and obituaries. They were an amazing group who settled the land, cleared it, farmed it, built homes, schools, churches, roads, married each other and raised families. There are many historical sites and monuments still there that are overseen by their descendants. Our history is kept alive by thousands of descendants and hundreds who work on genealogy and share their knowledge.
