  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Scandinavia since 1500 written by Byron J. Nordstrom and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though marked by certain geographical, linguistic, and cultural differences, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands are united by a common bond and a shared history. This history comes richly to life in this up-to-date and thorough account of modern Scandinavia. Structuring his history along the lines of traditional European chronology-Renaissance, Early Modern, Modern, and Contemporary periods-Byron J. Nordstrom brings a distinctly twentieth-century perspective to his work. He shows how religions, political ideas, economic practices, intellectual movements, and technological innovations have come to Scandinavia from abroad only to be modified and recast in a uniquely Nordic character. Among the many topics he examines are Gustav II’s military reforms, Danish absolutism, the constitutions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Scandinavian modern design, management techniques and shopfloor production strategies, and the welfare state. Surveying political, diplomatic, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the region’s history, Scandinavia since 1500 is a comprehensive yet nuanced portrait of this unique region.

Book A History of the Norwegian Press 1660 2015

Download or read book A History of the Norwegian Press 1660 2015 written by Hans Fredrik Dahl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the nineteenth century the advent of printed pamphlets, with their news and advertisements, gave every town along Norway's long coast – populated by farmers, fishermen, clergy, businessmen and shopkeepers – a common language and a public arena for news and ideas. In Norway alone, the number of titles grew from a handful to a hundred in the course of the century. From 1900 to 1940 the number of papers swelled to two hundred and seventy – the number that remains today. The press system created a substantial structure, which would prove vital for many of the later media outlets that developed over the twentieth century with the breakthrough of new technologies - cinema industry, radio broadcasting, television and the internet. Newspapers generated the money and power for the development of these media, thus shaping such media and determining, or at least influencing, their perception and reception in Norwegian society. The press in Norway is therefore at the core of the modern media system and its rich history.

Book International Impact on 19th Century Norwegian Education

Download or read book International Impact on 19th Century Norwegian Education written by Merethe Roos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Norwegian education throughout the course of the 19th century, and discusses its development in light of broader transnational impulses. The nineteenth century is regarded as a period of increasing national consciousness in Norway, pointing forward to the political independency that the country was granted in 1905. Education played an important role in this process of nationalisation: the author posits that transnational – for the most part Scandinavian – impulses were more decisive for the development of Norwegian education than has been acknowledged in previous research. Drawing on the work of educator and school bureaucrat Hartvig Nissen, who is recognised as the most important educational strategist in 19th century Norway, this book will be of interest to scholars of the history of education and Norwegian education more generally.

Book Norwegian Catch Up

Download or read book Norwegian Catch Up written by Jonathon W. Moses and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Norwegian Catch-Up' looks at the early Norwegian economic trajectory in the light of its external commitments and opportunities. Detailing Norway's economic performance relative to other countries at a time characterized by globalization, it has a particular focus on the role of international trade, investment and migration. The book examines how a small open state adapted successfully to the demands of (and opportunities provided by) a global market place. Not only did Norway manage an impressive economic record, but it developed concomitantly a strong and articulate labor movement and resilient democratic institutions. In short, the Norwegian example provides hope for development in a context of globalization. This text provides the student with a pioneering new vantage point for understanding the nature and scope of today's globalization and its effect on economic (and political) development. It also provides a historical reflection on the liberal antecedent of modern social democracy.

Book Nationalism in Modern Europe

Download or read book Nationalism in Modern Europe written by Derek Hastings and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derek Hastings's Nationalism in Modern Europe is the essential guide to a potent political and cultural phenomenon that featured prominently across the modern era. With firm grounding in transnational and global contexts, the book traces the story of nationalism in Europe from the French Revolution to the present. Hastings reflects on various nationalist ideas and movements across Europe, and always with a keen appreciation of other prevalent signifiers of belonging – such as religion, race, class and gender – which helps to inform and strengthen the analysis. The text shines a light on key historiographical trends and debates and includes 20 images, 14 maps and a range of primary source excerpts which can serve to sharpen vital analytical skills which are crucial to the subject. New content and features for the second edition include: - A chapter examining region, religion, class and gender as alternative 'markers of identity' throughout the 19th century - An enhanced global dimension that covers transnational fascism and non-European comparatives - Additional primary source excerpts and figures - Historiographical updates throughout which account for recent research in the field
