Book Black or Right

Download or read book Black or Right written by Louis M. Maraj and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black or Right: Anti/Racist Campus Rhetorics explores notions of Blackness in white institutional—particularly educational—spaces. In it, Louis M. Maraj theorizes how Black identity operates with/against ideas of difference in the age of #BlackLivesMatter. Centering Blackness in frameworks for antiracist agency through interdisciplinary Black feminist lenses, Black or Right asks how those racially signifying “diversity” in US higher education (and beyond) make meaning in the everyday. Offering four Black rhetorics as antiracist means for rhetorical reclamation—autoethnography, hashtagging, inter(con)textual reading, and reconceptualized disruption—the book uses Black feminist relationality via an African indigenous approach. Maraj examines fluid, quotidian ways Black folk engage anti/racism at historically white institutions in the United States in response to violent campus spaces, educational structures, protest movements, and policy practice. Black or Right’s experimental, creative style strives to undiscipline knowledge from academic confinement. Exercising different vantage points in each chapter—autoethnographer, digital media scholar/pedagogue, cultural rhetorician, and critical discourse analyst—Maraj challenges readers to ecologically understand shifting, multiple meanings of Blackness in knowledge-making. Black or Right’s expressive form, organization, narratives, and poetics intimately interweave with its argument that Black folk must continuously invent “otherwise” in reiterative escape from oppressive white spaces. In centering Black experiences, Black theory, and diasporic Blackness, Black or Right mobilizes generative approaches to destabilizing institutional whiteness, as opposed to reparative attempts to “fix racism,” which often paradoxically center whiteness. It will be of interest to both academic and general readers and significant for specialists in cultural rhetorics, Black studies, and critical theory.

Book Music and the Racial Imagination

Download or read book Music and the Racial Imagination written by Ronald M. Radano and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A specter lurks in the house of music, and it goes by the name of race," write Ronald Radano and Philip Bohlman in their introduction. Yet the intimate relationship between race and music has rarely been examined by contemporary scholars, most of whom have abandoned it for the more enlightened notions of ethnicity and culture. Here, a distinguished group of contributors confront the issue head on. Representing an unusually broad range of academic disciplines and geographic regions, they critically examine how the imagination of race has influenced musical production, reception, and scholarly analysis, even as they reject the objectivity of the concept itself. Each essay follows the lead of the substantial introduction, which reviews the history of race in European and American, non-Western and global musics, placing it within the contexts of the colonial experience and the more recent formation of "world music." Offering a bold, new revisionist agenda for musicology in a postmodern, postcolonial world, this book will appeal to students of culture and race across the humanities and social sciences.

Book Simbhoonath Capildeo

Download or read book Simbhoonath Capildeo written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a deconstruction of the political discourse of Simbhoonath Capildeo the progenitor of Hindu nationalist discourse in Trinidad and Tobago. Capildeo's Hindu nationalism is premised upon a rootedness in Trinidad and Tobago, a fervent praxis premised on bhakti (devotion) towards creating a discourse of Sanatan Dharma that was relevant to life in the west as a Hindu that was sustainable, and finally a political praxis that was demonstrably anti- racist and egalitarian in the tradition of democratic socialism.

Book Tubal Uriah Butler of Trinidad and Tobago Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana

Download or read book Tubal Uriah Butler of Trinidad and Tobago Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explodes myths on the decolonization process in former British colonies of Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana. Myths that masked the fact that the British colonial overlord with the full support of their local lackeys stage managed the process to ensure that compliant regimes were put in place as the inheritors of Independence from the British. Tubal Uriah Butler was systematically destroyed as a political leader to end his threat to the political order as he was not of the required material to be an inheritor of Independence. Kwame Nkrumah was fit to rule Ghana but he was subsequently removed in 1966. The social orders of Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana have been deeply impacted by British machinations on the road to Independence to this day.

Book Snapshots 3

Download or read book Snapshots 3 written by Frank Maraj and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Snapshots 3, Maraj carries the reader into the recesses of his mind in his search for identity. Trapped between two worlds, both physically (Canada and Trinidad) and ideologically (Hinduism and Catholicism), Maraj attempts to reconcile the conflicts. Not only is Snapshots 3 an excellent read, but it could also be a philosophical teaching “textbook” for teachers. It reminds teachers how important words and attitudes are—teachers can speak life into students and inspire them, or they can destroy them with one small slip of the tongue. In Snapshots 3, we see Frank Maraj, the professional teacher, from the first days of his teaching career to the last days. His anecdotes highlight the joys and trials of teaching with reflective insights that challenge the philosophical underpinnings of the educational system.

Book The East Indian Problem in Trinidad and Tobago 1953 1962 Terror and Race War in Guyana 1961 1964

Download or read book The East Indian Problem in Trinidad and Tobago 1953 1962 Terror and Race War in Guyana 1961 1964 written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book deals with British colonial strategy in its colonies of Trinidad and Tobago and British Guiana/Guyana to deal with an East Indian threat to the political order it desired in the run up to independence for Trinidad and Tobago in the 1960's and the threat of Communist subversion in Guyana in the 1950's and 1960's. In both instances the British strategy called for the creation of a racist political order that destroyed the East Indian threat in Trinidad and Tobago and placed a minority race in power through successive fraudulent elections until the decade of the 1990's in Guyana. The British legacy in both instances is a racist social order premised upon racist hegemony."

Book The Regulation of Religion and the Making of Hinduism in Colonial Trinidad

Download or read book The Regulation of Religion and the Making of Hinduism in Colonial Trinidad written by Alexander Rocklin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can religious freedom be granted to people who do not have a religion? While Indian indentured workers in colonial Trinidad practiced cherished rituals, "Hinduism" was not a widespread category in India at the time. On this Caribbean island, people of South Asian descent and African descent came together—under the watchful eyes of the British rulers—to walk on hot coals for fierce goddesses, summon spirits of the dead, or honor Muslim martyrs, practices that challenged colonial norms for religion and race. Drawing deeply on colonial archives, Alexander Rocklin examines the role of the category of religion in the regulation of the lives of Indian laborers struggling for autonomy. Gradually, Indians learned to narrate the origins, similarities, and differences among their fellows' cosmological views, and to define Hindus, Muslims, and Christians as distinct groups. Their goal in doing this work of subaltern comparative religion, as Rocklin puts it, was to avoid criminalization and to have their rituals authorized as legitimate religion—they wanted nothing less than to gain access to the British promise of religious freedom. With the indenture system's end, the culmination of this politics of recognition was the gradual transformation of Hindus' rituals and the reorganization of their lives—they fabricated a "world religion" called Hinduism.

Book Eric Williams and the Anticolonial Tradition

Download or read book Eric Williams and the Anticolonial Tradition written by Maurice St. Pierre and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leader in the social movement that achieved Trinidad and Tobago’s independence from Britain in 1962, Eric Williams (1911–1981) served as its first prime minister. Although much has been written about Williams as a historian and a politician, Maurice St. Pierre is the first to offer a full-length treatment of him as an intellectual. St. Pierre focuses on Williams's role not only in challenging the colonial exploitation of Trinbagonians but also in seeking to educate and mobilize them in an effort to generate a collective identity in the struggle for independence. Drawing on extensive archival research and using a conflated theoretical framework, the author offers a portrait of Williams that shows how his experiences in Trinidad, England, and America radicalized him and how his relationships with other Caribbean intellectuals—along with Aimé Césaire in Martinique, Juan Bosch in the Dominican Republic, George Lamming of Barbados, and Frantz Fanon from Martinique—enabled him to seize opportunities for social change and make a significant contribution to Caribbean epistemology.
