The only problem was that due to centuries of abuse by human hands, the ancient Caledonian pinewoods were dying, and it would take radical measures to save them. After 25 years of extremely hard work, the pinewoods, bogs, moors and mountains are returning to their former glory. Regeneration is the story of this success, featuring not only the people who are protecting the land and quietly working to undo the wrongs of the past, but also the myriad creatures which inspire them to do so. In addition, it also tackles current controversies such as raptor persecution, deer management and rewilding and asks bigger questions about the nature of conservation itself: what do we see when we look at our wild places? Adam Watson as a schoolboy made field observations on birds in north-east Scotland during the 1940s and early 1950s. These are of special interest because hardly any local ornithologists lived there, and his main set of observations is published here for the first time. As well as accounts for all species seen, there is detailed information on several species whose status has changed greatly since: declines of breeding greenshanks and ring ouzels, and rapid increases in the proportions of feral doves and carrion crows. These and other observations form a useful baseline for comparison with what is now being seen and recorded by hundreds of ornithologists living in and visiting the area. Ian Francis came to north-east Scotland in the early 1990s and has taken part in many aspects of local ornithology. He was first editor of a major book: The Breeding Birds of North-East Scotland, published in 2011, which documents the current breeding distributions of birds and assesses changes over 40 years, allowing a modern perspective on Adam Watson's observations from the mid-1900s. The current book by Adam Watson and Ian Francis, Birds in north-east Scotland then and now, also includes a previously unpublished account of long-term research by Adam Watson, Rik Smith and Mick Marquiss on summering snow buntings, one of the UK's rarest regularly breeding birds.

Book excerpt: Ed Rattray began climbing in the Cairngorms in the 1940s and first donned skis in 1950, long before modern equipment was available and when mountain clothing and skis were all ex-War Department kit. He graduated into the Etchacan and Cairngorm Mountaineering Clubs and became a founder member of the Aberdeen Ski Club in 1956.Later, he was active in helping to set up the Scottish National Ski Council in 1963 (now known as Snowsport Scotland). The skiing movement in Scotland burst into life as soon as the first major ski tows and lifts were built in 1961. He was just one of tens of thousands of skiers swept along by the euphoria of the time and it was the beginning of what he calls the skiing revolution.Throughout the 1960s, when Scotland went skiing, more than a hundred clubs were formed while schools, youth organisations, and thousands of other individuals, discovered the winter mountains. From that movement, young Scottish athletes emerged and began to dominate in the sport to become British Alpine Skiing Champions and GB Olympic Team members. His involvement at club and national level over many years meant he amassed a large archive of information and pictures, which he uses to illustrate this, his historical interpretation of the last half of the last century: Scottish Skiing – The Golden Years. Part history, part memoir and part anecdote, this book will appeal to those with a keen interest in skiing.
