Book Norwich s Maps of Africa

Download or read book Norwich s Maps of Africa written by I. Norwich and published by Terra Nova. This book was released on 1997 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of forty years, Oscar Norwich accumulated the world's greatest private collection of African maps. This catalog comprises a record of foreign knowledge of the continent from the "Age of Exploration" to modern times, and demonstrates how the rest of the world was quick to learn the shape of the African continent but slow to grasp the realities of its interior. From the fabulous creatures depicted on early maps to the blank "regions unknown" of later ones, from those that depicted the kingdom of the legendary Prester John to maps as late as the 19th century that still featured the imaginary Mountains of Kong, this collection documents a long and troubled history of developing knowledge of the continent. Each map is illustrated and carefully described, including bibliographical citations. Originally published in 1983, the book has been revised and edited by Jeffrey Stone for this second edition.

Book Geography of Claudius Ptolemy

Download or read book Geography of Claudius Ptolemy written by Claudius Ptolemy and published by Cosimo Classics. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography of Claudius Ptolemy, originally titled Geographia and written in the second century, is a depiction of the geography of the Roman Empire at the time. Though inaccurate due to Ptolemy's varying methods of measurement and use of outdated data, Geography of Claudius Ptolemy is nonetheless an excellent example of ancient geographical study and scientific method. This edition contains more than 40 maps and illustrations, reproduced based on Ptolemy's original manuscript. It remains a fascinating read for students of scientific history and Greek influence. CLAUDIUS PTOLEMY (A.D. 90- A.D. 168) was a poet, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and geographer who wrote in Greek, though he was a Roman citizen. He is most well-known for three scientific treatises he wrote on astronomy, astrology, and geography, respectively titled Almagest, Apotelesmatika, and Geographia. His work influenced early Islamic and European studies, which in turn influenced much of the modern world. Ptolemy died in Alexandria as a member of Greek society.

  • Author : Florence Bernault

Download or read book Colonial Transactions written by Florence Bernault and published by Duke University Press Books. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Colonial Transactions Florence Bernault moves beyond the racial divide that dominates colonial studies of Africa. Instead, she illuminates the strange and frightening imaginaries that colonizers and colonized shared on the ground. Bernault looks at Gabon from the late nineteenth century to the present, historicizing the most vivid imaginations and modes of power in Africa today: French obsessions with cannibals, the emergence of vampires and witches in the Gabonese imaginary, and the use of human organs for fetishes. Struggling over objects, bodies, agency, and values, colonizers and colonized entered relations that are better conceptualized as "transactions." Together they also shared an awareness of how the colonial situation broke down moral orders and forced people to use the evil side of power. This foreshadowed the ways in which people exercise agency in contemporary Africa, as well as the proliferation of magical fears and witchcraft anxieties in present-day Gabon. Overturning theories of colonial and postcolonial nativism, this book is essential reading for historians and anthropologists of witchcraft, power, value, and the body.
