Book The Cost of Maple Sugaring in Vermont

Download or read book The Cost of Maple Sugaring in Vermont written by Paul E. Sendak and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2We developed an annual maple-syrup-production cost series for the period 1972 to 1984. We specified the physical input required for a 3,000-tap, plastic tubing with vacuum system with an oil-fired open-pan evaporator. Current value data were used to estimate the annual production cost of a gallon of syrup. Cost increased from 6.16 per gallon in 1972 to $15.93 in 1984; however, much of this increase is the result of inflation. The sugarhouse, where syrup is processed, accounted for a relatively larger share of the total cost of production in 1984 (66 percent) than it did in 1972 (53 percent). A sensitivity analysis indicated that total cost is most sensitive to changes in wages for labor and cost of fuel oil.S3

Book excerpt: A half-century ago, the world was trying to heal the wounds of global war. People were rushing to make up for lost time, grasping for material wealth. This was the era of total electric living, a phrase beamed into living rooms by General Electric spokesman Ronald Reagan. Environmental awareness was barely a gleam in the eye of even Rachel Carson. And yet, Helen and Scott Nearing were on a totally different path, having left the city for the country, eschewing materialistic society in a quest for the self-sufficiency they deemed the Good Life. Chelsea Green is pleased to honor their example by publishing a new edition of The Maple Sugar Book, complete with a new section of never-before-published photos of the Nearings working on the sugaring operation, and an essay by Greg Joly relating the story behind the book and placing the Nearings' work in the context of their neighborhood and today's maple industry. Maple sugaring was an important source of cash for the Nearings, as it continues to be for many New England farmers today. This book is filled with a history of sugaring from Native American to modern times, with practical tips on how to sap trees, process sap, and market syrup. In an age of microchips and software that are obsolete before you can install them, maple sugaring is a process that's stood the test of time. Fifty years after its original publication in 1950, The Maple Sugar Book is as relevant as ever to the homestead or small-scale commercial practitioner.

The Abenakis were discoverers of the sweet sap that flowed from Vermont s trees, and Thomas Jefferson was an early promoter of it. During the Civil War, maple sugar was cheered as the moral alternative to cane sugar the latter having been produced by slave labor and in subsequent wars, it was shipped to U.S. troops around the world. Enriched with maple-inspired songs, recipes and legends, Maple Sugarin in Vermont illuminates not just the industry, but also the culture of maple sugar in the Green Mountain State."
