Book excerpt: Ms. leaf from an early Bible in Latin, possibly written in Paris during the 13th century, containing text from the New Testament Gospel of John, describing the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. Text begins at John 18:18, as Christ is brought before Pilate, exchanged for the thief Barabbas, and crucified. The disciple Peter denies Christ three times. Chapter 20 documents the resurrection of Christ, as Mary Magdalene and the disciples find the tombstone rolled aside, and the tomb empty. Text ends with John 20:15, when Mary sees Jesus standing nearby, but does not recognize him. Variations in text spacing and ink color suggest that corrections have been made; one word at the beginning of Chapter 20 is crossed out.

Book excerpt: The Glossa Ordinaria on the Bible was the ubiquitous text of the Middle Ages. Compiled in twelfth-century France, this multi-volume work, containing the entire text of Scripture surrounded by a commentary drawn from patristic and medieval authors, is still extant in thousands of manuscripts, testifying to the centrality of the work for generations of medieval scholars. Although the Glossa has been the subject of modern study, it is surrounded by myth. This book, based on manuscript evidence, is the first to draw together the history of this monumental work, its authorship, content, layout, production and use. Raising new questions, and pointing the way to further research, it opens up the Glossa to all students of medieval religion and intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has emphasised the importance of insular French in medieval English culture alongside English and Latin; for a period of some four hundred years, French (variously labelled the French of England, Anglo-Norman, Anglo-French, and Insular French) rivalled these two languages. The essays here focus on linguistic adaptation and translation in this new multilingual England, where John Gower wrote in Latin while his contemporary Chaucer could break new ground in English.
