Book Manufacturing Exports from Indian States

Download or read book Manufacturing Exports from Indian States written by Jaya Prakash Pradhan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the less-explored dimensions of how industries in different Indian subnational spaces or states have responded to the growing phenomenon of internationalization. What factors have influenced firms participating in global business? Have state (both central and provincial) policies acted as catalyst for local firms? Not only does this study delve into these issues; it also painstakingly develops a comprehensive database that remains unique in the absence of reliable official statistics on this subject to date. Efforts have been made to establish a reasonably consistent dataset for the period 1990-2008 derived from the CMIE-PROWESS database. Care has been taken to condense the data and classify it by sector, location, size and ownership. The study delineates export patterns by firm and state and explores factors influencing export decisions according to sector, size and location. A further interesting aspect is the book’s critical examination of industrial and trade promotion policies at the state/regional level that might have contributed to or hindered exporting by firms. The states considered for detailed policy discussions are highly diverse and include Gujarat, Odisha and Karnataka. To address the glaring absence of literature on the role of subnational factors in enterprises’ export performance, a preliminary state-by-state analysis of the spatial determinants of firms’ export activities is also provided.

Book Export oriented Industrialization in Developing Countries

Download or read book Export oriented Industrialization in Developing Countries written by Pitou van Dijck and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes and analyses in depth the transformation taking place in world manufacturing industry and its impact on the economies of newly industrialising countries. In Part One, the causes and characteristics of export-oriented industrialisation are studied, often using world-wide cross-country analyses. Trade policies and export strategies underlying such industrialisation processes get much attention. Part Two mainly deals with the domestic preconditions for and consequences of export-oriented manufacturing production, on the basis of detailed case studies of seven East and South-East Asian countries.

Book excerpt: This paper tests two alternative models of selection into export: lower costs and better market familiarity. Both are potentially subject to learning-by-doing, but differ in the type of experience required. Learning to produce at lower cost - what we call productivity learning - depends on general experience, while learning to design products that appeal to foreign consumers - market learning - depends on export experience. Using panel and cross-section data on Moroccan manufacturers, we uncover evidence of market learning but little is evidence that productivity learning is what enables firms to export. These findings are consistent with the concentration of Moroccan manufacturing exports in consumer items, i.e., the garment, textile, and leather sectors. It is the young firms that export. Most do so immediately after creation. We also find that, among exporters, new products are exported very rapidly after production has begun. The share of exported output nevertheless increases for 2-3 years after a new product is introduced, which is indicative of some learning. Old firms are unlikely to switch to exports, even in response to changes in macro incentives.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Fafchamps, Hamine, and Zeufack test two alternative models of learning to export: productivity learning, whereby firms learn to reduce production costs, and market learning, whereby firms learn to design products that appeal to foreign consumers. Using panel and cross-section data on Moroccan manufacturers, the authors uncover evidence of market learning but little evidence of productivity learning. These findings are consistent with the concentration of Moroccan manufacturing exports in consumer items"the garment, textile, and leather sectors. It is the young firms that export. Most do so immediately after creation. The authors also find that, among exporters, new products are exported very rapidly after production has begun. The share of exported output nevertheless increases for 2-3 years after a new product is introduced. Old firms are unlikely to switch to exports, even in response to changes in macroeconomic incentives. The authors find a positive relationship between exports and productivity and conclude that it is the result of self-selection: it is the more productive firms that move into exports. Policy implications are discussed. This paper"a product of Macroeconomics and Growth, Development Research Group"is part of a larger effort in the group to investigate the microeconomic foundations of export and growth performance using plant-level data. Book Products and Provinces

Download or read book Products and Provinces written by Mr.Itai Agur and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waning of the commodity boom places renewed emphasis on manufacturing as an engine for Canadian growth. However, Canadian manufacturing exports have been relatively stagnant since 2000. While the exchange rate depreciation over the past two years has energized export growth, the response has not been as strong as would have been expected given the size of the depreciation. More fundamental issues appear to be impeding the growth of the Canadian manufacturing sector. This study analyzes the structural factors behind export competitiveness by using unique Canadian data on exports, which are disaggregated both by province and by product. Matching exports to similarly disaggregated data on R&D, the capital stock and other supply-side variables, we find that these variables significantly affect export growth, beyond the impact of the exchange rate. In particular, investment in R&D, capital infrastructure and vocational training improves innovation and production capacity. These results are robust to a factor-augmented approach that controls for multicollinearity.

Book Competitiveness and External Trade Performance of the French Manufacturing Industry

Download or read book Competitiveness and External Trade Performance of the French Manufacturing Industry written by Pierre-Richard Agénor and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-12-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an assessment of competitiveness and external trade performance of the French manufacturing industry during the 1980s and early 1990s. The first part of the paper reviews developments in a broad range of competitiveness indicators. The analysis indicates that the manufacturing sector appears to have maintained its competitive position in recent years. The second part discusses developments in export market shares. The third part estimates a vector error correction model relating the trade ratio to relative unit labor costs, domestic and foreign demand, and nonprice competitiveness. Variance decompositions suggest that fluctuations in price and nonprice competitiveness account for about two-fifths of fluctuations in manufacturing trade flows.

Book The Relationship Between Manufacturing Strategy and Export Performance in Australia

Download or read book The Relationship Between Manufacturing Strategy and Export Performance in Australia written by Ravi Upret and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-07 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, language: English, abstract: This literature review identifies the relationship between manufacturing strategies and export performance of big and small firms. Johnson stated that back in 1960 Australian manufacturing contributed around 25% to the GDP, which got reduced to around 6.8% in the most recent years. The manufacturing in Australia is mostly centered on a few prominent sectors, like food and beverages, petrochemicals, machines and tools, metal products, textile clothing, and footwear. In the most recent years, it can be seen that most of the products manufactured in Australia are exported to the foreign countries. Different industries such as food processing, textile, motor vehicles and automotive industry, chemical industry a few prominent industries, fall under the purview of the manufacturing sector in Australia. The recent statement of the International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde about the world economic scenario indicates that the largest export market of Australia, namely, China will continue to show a downward trend in the economy. In the current year, the Chinese economy is assumed to grow at 6.9 % in the current year 2016 although the other developing economies, such as India and western countries, such as Europe and America are showing a bit recovered growth rate. It indicates that the Australia needs to rediscover its manufacturing strategy which should be aligned to the markets in these countries. The current study finds its objectives in the research, which explores any significant correlation between the manufacturing practices and export performance of manufacturing in Australia.

Book Participation in Export Markets and Productivity Performance in Canadian Manufacturing

Download or read book Participation in Export Markets and Productivity Performance in Canadian Manufacturing written by John R. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the relationship between productivity of a manufacturing plant and its participation in exporting activities. There are 2 possible explanations for a positive relationship between the two. First, higher productivity and higher efficiency may be required if plants are to enter export markets. Second, by exporting, plants may learn of superior technologies and management techniques and increase their productivity. The paper examines both possibilities. It also examines differences in the effect of exporting on productivity between foreign- and domestic-controlled plants, and between young and older plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural transformation depends not only on how much countries export but also on what they export and with whom they trade. This paper breaks new ground in analyzing India’s exports by the technological content, quality, sophistication, and complexity of the export basket. We identify five priority areas for policies: (1) reduction of trade costs, at and behind the border; (2) further liberalization of FDI including through simplification of regulations and procedures; (3) improving infrastructure including in urban areas to enhance manufacturing and services in cities; (4) preparing labor resources (skills) and markets (flexibility) for the technological progress that will shape jobs in the years ahead; and (5) creating an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship to draw the economy into higher productivity activities.
