Book Ethical Foundations of Palliative Care for Alzheimer Disease

Download or read book Ethical Foundations of Palliative Care for Alzheimer Disease written by Ruth B. Purtilo and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alzheimer disease afflicts more than twelve million people worldwide, and its incidence is increasing at a staggering rate. People with the disorder are living longer than have those in previous generations, and they require interventions for quality-of-life issues associated with palliative care. However, the symptoms of Alzheimer disease often fail to place such persons into settings where palliative care resources are available to them. Indeed, clinicians and other caregivers may be unsure about what constitutes effective palliation in these cases. At the same time, the ethical issues involved in providing end-of-life care to persons with Alzheimer disease remain on the margins of mainstream bioethics. In Ethical Foundations of Palliative Care for Alzheimer Disease, leading ethicists and clinicians from the United States and Europe explore ethical and scientific concerns about the diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer disease, challenges arising from applying palliative procedures to its symptoms, key philosophical and theological concepts central to our understanding of the disease and to end-of-life decisions, and the changing patterns of relevant medical, social, and economic policies. Cross-cultural, multidisciplinary, and state-of-the-art, this volume is a unique and important resource for bioethicists, clinicians, and policy makers everywhere. Contributors: David A. Book Environment in Key Words

Download or read book Environment in Key Words written by Isaac Paenson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental problems ignore international boundaries. Toxic wastes travel by water and air, sometimes displacing the effects of an environmental disaster entirely outside of its country of origin. It is now understood that to overcome the problems that face us international co-operation is required. This important work is designed to assist in that process, by helping to break down the language barriers that stand between countries. The manual, written in parallel English, German, French and Russian texts, provides the basic tools of communication in the specialized fields of environmental sciences between speakers of these languages. Each chapter has been revised in each separate language by specialists in the field to guarantee the authenticity of the information presented. The author is unique in his approach, presenting the key-words in context, as opposed to simple glossary entries, allowing the reader to fully understand the complex relations between the word and the concepts involved. A comprehensive index written in all four languages guides the reader through the text, providing references to the words as they are used in different disciplines.

Book The Semantics of Relationships

Download or read book The Semantics of Relationships written by R. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of this volume was the participation of the editors in an ACMlSIGIR (Association for Computing Machinery/Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval) workshop entitled "Beyond Word Relations" (Hetzler, 1997). This workshop examined a number of relationship types with significance for information retrieval beyond the conventional topic-matching relationship. From this shared participation came the idea for an edited volume on relationships, with chapters to be solicited from researchers and practitioners throughout the world. Ultimately, one volume became two volumes. The first volume, Relationships in the Organization of Knowledge (Bean & Green, 200 I), examines the role of relationships in knowledge organization theory and practice, with emphasis given to thesaural relationships and integration across systems, languages, cultures, and disciplines. This second volume examines relationships in a broader array of contexts. The two volumes should be seen as companions, each informing the other. As with the companion volume, we are especially grateful to the authors who willingly accepted challenges of space and time to produce chapters that summarize extensive bodies of research. The value of the volume clearly resides in the quality of the individual chapters. In naming this volume The Semantics of Relationships: An Interdisciplinary Perspective, we wanted to highlight the fact that relationships are not just empty connectives. Relationships constitute important conceptual units and make significant contributions to meaning.
