Book Manual Training for Common Schools

Download or read book Manual Training for Common Schools written by Eldreth G. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training for Common Schools: An Organized Course in Wood-Working In preparing this book on "Manual Training" the author has attempted to be thorough rather than complete. No attempt has been made to add anything new to the subject-matter, but only to arrange well-known facts so that they will offer as systematic and complete a course of study as is offered in any of the older organized courses. The arrangement of the text as herein presented is the direct result of five years' teaching the subject of wood-working to beginning classes. This class work was preceded by a number of years of shop work as a journeyman machinist and a factory foreman, as well as by a four years' college course in science and engineering. Help in preparing the text has been gleaned from so many fields that it would be impossible to make direct mention of all who have given valuable assistance. The author wishes, however, to acknowledge the aid given by Mr. Charles E. Emmerich, principal of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, and Mr. Paul W. Covert, head of the manual training department, who have allowed such freedom in the conduct of classes that it has been possible to make all parts of the work measure up to a class-room test. Acknowledgment is due Mr. Otto Stark, head of the art department of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, for his earnest and careful criticism of the models, drawings, and photographs. This criticism has added much to the value of the text. The final drawings from which the cuts were executed were made by Mr. Edward Stark, of Indianapolis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the High School There is a widespread and' growing demand, in this country for manual training and industrial education. This demand is an effort to meet some of the fundamental educational needs of our school system and the social need for a larger number of intelligent trained workers for the industries. It has resulted in the teaching of a variety of the manual or mechanic arts and in the development of a number of systems of instruction. Almost all of the large cities in every State have spent large sums for buildings and equipment in order to meet the demand. The work in these centers is thoroughly organized, and the excellent results thus far attained have fully justified the large expenditures. In order to extend the benefits of instruction in manual train ing to more schools, legislation to encourage and assist schools undertaking this work, has been enacted in many of the States. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is well, also, that we should be on our guard against a kind of pseudo manual training that is finding its way into the schools. As is always the case with new move ments, there is a good deal of experimenting with little knacks, which do nothing for either discipline or knowl edge. These are put forward by well-meaning persons as manual training, and great harm is done in this way in misleading the public and wasting the time and energies ofpupfls. Book Manual Training for the Grades College of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual Training for the Grades College of Education Classic Reprint written by Ohio State University and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training for the Grades, College of Education This College is one of the instrumentalities of the State for the training of teachers. It offers practical and theoretical courses for the professional training of high school teachers and principals, of principals of elementary schools, of supervisors of special studies, of superintendents of school systems, and of instructors in normal schools. Its purpose is to assist the student in the acquirement of a knowledge of the branches which he wishes to teach, to give him a right attitude toward education, and to establish in him a skill in the use of efficient methods of teaching. The demand for trained teachers has increased rapidly. The College has been in existence for five years, and has graduated four classes. All its graduates were appointed to positions as soon as they were ready for them. The call for teachers in certain lines, viz., science, mathematics, and manual training, has been greater than the college could supply. It is earnestly hoped that many students may see the opportunity open in these fields and prepare for the work. The effort of the college is to bring into proper adjustment within the limits of a four-year course the academic training, the theoretical professional training, and the practical professional training necessary for a teacher. Book The Teacher Training Handbook Revised

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher-Training Handbook Revised: First Standard Teacher-Training Course Scarcely second in importance to adequate preparation for teaching is a vision of the dignity, importance and possibili ties which the Sunday School teacher enjoys. No teacher in any institution of learning comes more directly in touch with the formative and constructive principles of human life and character. The subject matter taught, the conditions of the teaching, and the issues dependent on good teaching and bad teaching are the most momentous and, important to be found in any department of human instruction. For this reason, the vision of the Sunday School is followed in order with a vision of the mind with which the Sunday School teacher must deal. The influence of the modern Sun day School begins in the home. When the babe is brought into the world the Sunday School makes immediate claim on the life of both the mother and the new life which 'god has sent. Until the last problem which vexes maturity and age is solved, the Sunday School claims a right to deal with the human mind. The technical view of the mind and its develop ment is subordinated, throughout the discussion of the pupil. Book Teacher s Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teacher s Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work Classic Reprint written by J. S. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Handbook of Manual Training Metal Work Before commencing the work planned out in the following pages, the boys will have had considerable practice in the use of the rule, com passes and set squares, to which should be added that of the drawing board and T-square. They should also understand thoroughly the meaning of plan and elevation, and be able to draw the plan and elevation of simple models. A working acquaintance with scale drawing is also necessary as a preliminary to the study of metal work. All drawing should be executed to as large a scale as possible. As in most Manual Training Centres there is only one forge and one teacher, it is difficult to provide work at the forge for each boy. This difficulty is partially obviated by working certain exercises conjointly, namely, 11 and 12, 18 and 19, and 2 5 and 26. Similarly exercises 13 and 14 are worked conjointly, because, as a rule, only one set of stocks and dies is supplied. Heavy chipping and surfacing are put late in the course, as this work is exhausting to most boys until their muscles have become hardened by practice in the use of the file. The method of holding the various tools, and detailed instructions for marking out and drawing the exercises contained in this book, are fully illustrated by diagrams in the key to be published shortly. Book Industrial Education

Download or read book Industrial Education written by Samuel G. Love and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Education: A Guide to Manual Training The lessons in this volume were originally pre pared as a guide for the instructors and pupils in the Industrial department of the schools with which the authors are connected. A complete system of Manual Training having been organized and put in operation, it became necessary that it should be formulated for the convenience of the classes, and for the guidance of the instructors in charge of them. It was not supposed that there would be a demand for the publication of this course in Manual Train ing. But the subject of Industrial Education has been rapidly growing in the minds of teachers and others interested in the development and growth of educational methods. Inquiries came with increased frequency as to what was being done in the J ames town schools, and whether it was practicable to make Manual Training a feature of education in the public schools. It was thought best to make no reply until actual tests, in all the grades from the Primary to the High Schools, had been made.
