Book excerpt: Desired States challenges the notion that in some cultures, sex and sexuality have become privatized and located in individual subjectivity rather than in public political practices and institutions. Instead, the book contends that desire is a central aspect of political culture. Based on fieldwork and archival research, Frazier explores the gendered and sexualized dynamics of political culture in Chile, an imperialist context, asking how people connect with and become mobilized in political projects in some cases or, in others, become disaffected or are excluded to varying degrees. The book situates the state in a rich and changing context of transnational and localized movements, imperialist interests, geo-political conflicts, and market forces to explore the broader struggles of desiring subjects, especially in those dimensions of life that are explicitly sexual and amorous: free love movements, marriage, the sixties’ sexual revolution in Cold War contexts, prostitution policies, ideas about men’s gratification, the charisma of leaders, and sexual/domestic violence against women.

This study is to date the only book-length investigation in either English or Spanish of this important national experiment in transforming the environmental, economic, and social nature of today’s dominant system of producing food.”—Al Campbell, University of Utah As large-scale industrial agriculture comes under increasing scrutiny because of its petroleum- and petrochemical-based input costs and environmentally objectionable consequences, increasing attention has been focused on sustainable, local, and agro-ecological techniques in food production. Cuba was forced by historical circumstances to be one of the pioneers in the massive application of these techniques. After the demise of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Cuba was left without access to external support needed to carry on with industrial agriculture. The economic crisis led the country to reconsider their former models of resource management. Cuba retooled its agricultural programs to focus on urban agriculture—sustainable, ecologically sound farming close to densely populated areas. Food now takes far less time to get to the people, who are now better nourished because they have easier access to whole foods. Moreover, urban farming has become a source of national pride—Cuba has one of the best urban agriculture programs in the world, with a thousand-fold increase in urban agricultural output since 1994. Sinan Koont has spent the last several years researching urban agriculture in Cuba, including field work at many sustainable farms on the island. He tells the story of why and how Cuba was able to turn to urban food production on a large scale with minimal use of chemicals, petroleum, and machinery, and of the successes it achieved—along with the continuing difficulties it still faces in reducing its need for food imports. Book excerpt: This book studies the text genre of medical brochures in the United Kingdom and Spain for two main reasons: firstly, to determine the features that these texts present in each country, and, secondly, to check if medical brochures published in Spain and translated from Spanish into English include all relevant features typical of original English texts. It begins by defining the terms ‘genre’, ‘class’ and ‘type’ and relating them to ‘medical brochures’. After referring to ‘text type’, a related term is explained: ‘text typology’. This leads to the discussion of several specialised typologies and the presentation of a new proposal of typology, in which the position of the genre of medical brochures is determined. In order to perform a contrastive study of medical brochures in English and in Spanish, the book defines what constitutes a ‘linguistic corpus’, comments on different types of corpora, and presents its own version of classification in which the corpus used for the study is located. Finally, the results obtained from the contrastive analysis are presented and analysed: the features observed in the original brochures (English and Spanish) are shown, and the results are contrasted with those found in the translated brochures.
