It was specially requested, when the work was commenced, that it might be a book that would be of service to novices in the art of attending to the "creature comforts of the inner man," and it has been the endeavor to make it such. In some instances, directions have been given so minutely that experienced housewives might say, "that is unnecessary. Every one knows that." But it is a lamentable fact, that many take upon themselves the care of a household, without any practical knowledge of the duties of the position. It is comely to look upon from the outside, but when once within the complicated machinery, the multiplicity of wheels to be set in motion, convinces one of the necessity of a knowledge of what to do and when to do it. This work does not pretend to be perfect in every part. Far from it. There will be, as in everything human, room for criticism. It is however, plain, practical and sensible, as far as it goes.
