But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design. Book excerpt: THE manual of Natural Theology which now makes its appearance before the English-speaking public, existed in manuscript substantially ready for print in the year 1889. Through a combination of untoward circumstances its publication has been delayed till now. The delay in its appearance has not been without advantage for the book itself. Its subject makes it most suitable to be the last in order of publication among those volumes of the Stonyhurst Series which are concerned about Speculative Philosophy; for though the utmost care has been taken to make it intelligible even to those who have studied no other branch of Philosophy, yet minds prepared for the reading of this manual by a careful perusal of its companions in the department of Speculative Philosophy, will arrive at a far deeper and fuller understanding of its contents. The better readers are versed in the laws of right reasoning by the study of Logic, the more thoroughly convinced they are of the absolute necessity for the human mind to admit the existence, sources, and criteria of Certitude, as laid down in the First Principles of our Series, the greater diligence they have bestowed upon acquiring a firm grasp of the fundamental notions and principles treated of in General Metaphysics, and the more solid the knowledge is they have gained of the moral freedom, spirituality, and immortality of the human soul expounded in Psychology, the greater will be their ability to appreciate and to turn to practical account the doctrine about God which is explained and defended in the present volume. This manual embraces not only those questions which in our Latin compendia usually are treated of under the heading Theologia Naturalis, but also those which commonly are discussed as a part of Cosmologia. This was done in order to give the necessary completeness to the treatment of my subject. Our English volumes are in the first place intended to help those who do not intend to study in detail Catholic Theology to a sound understanding of the most important questions of Philosophy, and particularly to show them the way to judge intelligently and to solve clearly modern difficulties against those natural truths which form the basis of Christianity.

Book Manual of Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Theology Classic Reprint written by Thomas B. Strong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Theology Theology is the science which deals with the Being and Nature of God. Christian Theology is the expression and analysis of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. All speculation into the First Cause of the world, the ground of moral obligation, even the immortality of the human soul, is or may be theological; that is, any one of these questions may be so discussed as to bring before us the notion of a Supreme Being, who made the world, whose nature is the source of the distinction of right and wrong, who brought man's soul into being, and preserves it continuously from dissolution. On the other hand, all such questions fail to be theological just in proportion as the idea of the Supreme Being is dropped out of sight. They must then be treated as subor dinate sections of physics, or of psychology, or of metaphysics. They take their theological colour from their contact with the idea of a Supreme Being, and no treatment of them apart from this idea is, in the strict sense, theological at all. As for the Being and Nature of God, apart from the Christian revelation of Him, we must derive our knowledge of it from the theological treatment of the questions mentioned above. By reflection upon the order of nature, of a certain kind, we reach the notion of a Creator. By reflection of a certain kind upon the moral law we reach the notion of a Personal Ruler of mankind, who rewards and punishes; and this result leads on to the discussion of the Immorality of Man. These are the contents of Natural Theology, as it is called; and they represent more or less completely the area over which man can move in the way of independent Speculation. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paley's examination of Christian theology identifies and attributes aspects of human physiology to divine creation, arguing that the appearance of man itself is a basis upon which we can determine the existence of God. This edition includes the author's anatomical illustrations. The book commences with the famous watchmaker analogy - the proposition that if you find a watch, you must assume there is a watchmaker. Going further, Paley points out that such a maker must have specifics of design in mind, and intentions for his creation. It follows therefore that all animals and humankind, as complex organisms, are creations; the middle chapters of the book sequentially examine aspects of human and creature anatomy which support this assertion. Paley conducts a wide-ranging investigation, wherein plants, birds, insects, mammals, humans and others are shown to be peculiar and thus a part of God's creation. The distinctness of certain organs, the valves of the heart, the intricacy of the skeletal musculature, and - in insects - the stings of wasps and probosces of bees, are cited in support of the overarching argument. Finally the astronomical heavens are mentioned as a sign of the creator's dazzling and intricate ability. The later chapters of the book are more overtly theological in tone; in particular, Paley is concerned with the personality of God. What attributes the creator might have, how great his abilities of planning and arrangement are, and how his being is essentially good since his creations can experience happiness and enjoy their existences. In the modern day, Natural Theology continues to be consulted both by creationists and by those seeking to understand the arguments of creationism. It is also read by modern scientists and atheists, that they may understand and counter the creationist arguments they disagree with.
