Book A Student s Guide to Infinite Series and Sequences

Download or read book A Student s Guide to Infinite Series and Sequences written by Bernhard W. Bach, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why study infinite series? Not all mathematical problems can be solved exactly or have a solution that can be expressed in terms of a known function. In such cases, it is common practice to use an infinite series expansion to approximate or represent a solution. This informal introduction for undergraduate students explores the numerous uses of infinite series and sequences in engineering and the physical sciences. The material has been carefully selected to help the reader develop the techniques needed to confidently utilize infinite series. The book begins with infinite series and sequences before moving onto power series, complex infinite series and finally onto Fourier, Legendre, and Fourier-Bessel series. With a focus on practical applications, the book demonstrates that infinite series are more than an academic exercise and helps students to conceptualize the theory with real world examples and to build their skill set in this area.

Book The Sea Island Mathematical Manual

Download or read book The Sea Island Mathematical Manual written by Frank J. Swetz and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Haidao Suanjing or Sea Island Mathematical Manual, is one of the "Ten Classics" of traditional Chinese mathematics, and its contents demonstrate the high standards of theoretical and mathematical sophistication present in early Chinese surveying theory. The Haidao composed in A.D. 263 by Liu Hui, established the mathematical procedures for much of East Asian surveying activity for the next one thousand years. The contents of the Haidao also testify to the ability of the Chinese to systematize mathematics and hint at the use of proof in Chinese mathematics, a concept usually associated with Greek mathematical thought. Frank Swetz provides an annotated translation of the Haidao and an analysis of its surveying problems. In particular, he details surveying techniques and undertakes a mathematical exposition of the Chinese chong cha solution procedures. The Haidao is a testimony to the ingenuity and skill of China's early surveyors and its author, Liu Hui. This study complements and extends the findings of Swetz's previous book, Was Pythagoras Chinese? An Examination of Right Triangle Theory in Ancient China.

Download or read book Geometry written by Harold R. Jacobs and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-03-14 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Jacobs’s Geometry created a revolution in the approach to teaching this subject, one that gave rise to many ideas now seen in the NCTM Standards. Since its publication nearly one million students have used this legendary text. Suitable for either classroom use or self-paced study, it uses innovative discussions, cartoons, anecdotes, examples, and exercises that unfailingly capture and hold student interest. This edition is the Jacobs for a new generation. It has all the features that have kept the text in class by itself for nearly 3 decades, all in a thoroughly revised, full-color presentation that shows today’s students how fun geometry can be. The text remains proof-based although the presentation is in the less formal paragraph format. The approach focuses on guided discovery to help students develop geometric intuition.

Book To Infinity and Beyond

Download or read book To Infinity and Beyond written by Eli Maor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eli Maor examines the role of infinity in mathematics and geometry and its cultural impact on the arts and sciences. He evokes the profound intellectual impact the infinite has exercised on the human mind, from the "horror infiniti" of the Greeks to the works of M.C. Escher; from the ornamental designs of the Moslems, to the sage Giordano Bruno, whose belief in an infinite universe led to his death at the hands of the Inquisition. But above all, the book describes the mathematician's fascination with infinity, a fascination mingled with puzzlement. "Maor explores the idea of infinity in mathematics and in art and argues that this is the point of contact between the two, best exemplified by the work of the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, six of whose works are shown here in beautiful color plates."--Los Angeles Times "[Eli Maor's] enthusiasm for the topic carries the reader through a rich panorama." Choice "Fascinating and enjoyable.... places the ideas of infinity in a cultural context and shows how they have been espoused and molded by mathematics."-Science.

Book Quantum Geometry

Download or read book Quantum Geometry written by Margaret Prugovecki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a review and analysis of the main mathematical, physical and epistomological difficulties encountered at the foundational level by all the conventional formulations of relativistic quantum theories, ranging from relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory in Minkowski space, to the various canonical and covariant approaches to quantum gravity. It is, however, primarily devoted to the systematic presentation of a quantum framework meant to deal effectively with these difficulties by reconsidering the foundations of these subjects, analyzing their epistemic nature, and then developing mathematical tools which are specifically designed for the elimination of all the basic inconsistencies. A carefully documented historical survey is included, and additional extensive notes containing quotations from original sources are incorporated at the end of each chapter, so that the reader will be brought up-to-date with the very latest developments in quantum field theory in curved spacetime, quantum gravity and quantum cosmology. The survey further provides a backdrop against which the new foundational and mathematical ideas of the present approach to these subjects can be brought out in sharper relief.

Book The Geometry of Schemes

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Eisenbud
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-04-06
  • ISBN : 0387226397

Download or read book The Geometry of Schemes written by David Eisenbud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.
