Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Differential Diagnosis: Presented Through an Analysis of 383 Cases Cases of disease present, as we say, certain leading symptoms. They thrust forward, like a soldier who presents arms, a complaint such as pain, cough, or nervousness, so that it occupies the foreground of the clinical picture. Such a presenting symptom, comparable to the presenting par in obstetrics, may turn out to be of minor im portance when we have studied the whole case. But at the outset it has the power to lead us toward right or wrong conclusions in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, according as we have or have not learned the art of following it up. This book is an attempt to study medicine from the point of view of the presenting symptom. I hope to show how the complaints of the patient - fragmentary expressions of the underlying disease - should be used as leads, and how their lead can be followed to the actual seat of the disease. Book Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease

Download or read book Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease written by Augustus Caille and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease: A d104-Book for Practitioners and Advanced Students To bring the broad domain of practical medicine fairly within the grasp of the family physician, and to assist the advanced student in acquiring a clin ical foundation has been my aim. The general practitioner, representing the unity and connection of the various branches of medical practice, must grasp the practical details of his art in order to be useful at the bedside; and a book to be of value to the family physician should convey clinical experience Without the exhaustive and often purely theoretical details to be found and sought for in monographs. Such a work I have endeavored to write. It has been my desire to reestablish the relations of internal medicine, surgery, and the several specialties; for this reason I have presented special istic methods from the view - point of the general clinician. Disease is neither medical nor surgical nor does it hover on the border lines, but the treatment of disease has become more surgical and the arbitrary division into medical and surgical disease is no longer tenable. This unitarian principle should not be ignored in the presentation of disease, and many methods of diag nosis and treatment originally worked out by the specialist have become, or should become, common property. Drugs no longer dominate our therapeutics; therefore the prominence given to hygienic, prophylactic, dietetic, hydrotherapeutic, and physical methods of treatment. At the same time Well-tried and valuable formulae are distributed throughout the book. In prescription writing the apothecaries' weight and not the metric system has been used. However, simple rules for converting one into the other are given. The special chapters on the Technique of Diagnosis and Laboratory Aids, on Paediatrics, and the various specialties, on diseases of the Osseous, Muscular, and Articular System, on Nutrition and Diet, on the Management of Dropsy and Effusion, on Massage, Vibration, Dry Hot Air Treatment, Poisons and Anaesthesia, it is to be hoped will not be an unwelcome addition to a book on practice. Each chapter is prefaced by a synopsis of its contents and by brief introductory remarks on the clinical pathology of its subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulating a diagnosis purely on the basis of clinical judgement can be fraught with difficulty and danger, yet this is the challenge faced every day by Primary Care physicians, who rarely have access to the diagnostic tools available to hospital-based colleagues. Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care has been specifically written with the needs of the Primary Care physician in mind. It examines the potential causes of common presentations and aims to help the physician differentiate between diseases, using history and examination alone. Diseases are listed in descending order of prevalence, with the commonest causes first, while high-risk conditions are highlighted to ensure they are not overlooked. Its unique tabulated format ensures key information is easily accessible, and the user-friendly format ensures the book can be used during consultations, home visits, and on ward rounds. Whether used by the undergraduate, postgraduate trainee or the experienced Primary Care physician, Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care is an invaluable tool designed to improve the reader's ability to diagnose on the basis of clinical judgement alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practice of Medicine: A Manual for Students and Practitioners To render this Epitome of Practice suitable for hasty reference by physicians, as well as for the use of students, it was deemed advisable in its original preparation to avoid undue curtailment of the most important subjects, such as typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. For this reason the necessary restrictions as to space were met by the exclusion of diseases of the pharynx, larynx, and tonsils, subjects which are treated fully in the companion volume on Diseases of the Nose and Throat. Under the headings of Diagnosis have been mentioned a few of the most important differential points of each disease. To Dr. D. Mitchell Prudden the author is indebted for assistance in the preparation of the introductory remarks on immunity. In the present revision the same principles have been followed as in the former editions. While the entire volume has been thoroughly revised, the principal changes have been necessitated by advances in the knowledge of infectious diseases and diagnostic methods. Partial reclassification of diseases and exclusion of obsolete material has permitted the inclusion of Acute Poliomyelitis.
