Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Continuation Schools and Technical Instruction This Manual is intended to meet the requirements of Authorities who are charged with the provision of Continuation Schools and Schools for Technical Instruction. The scheme adopted is, first to deal with the ordinary Elementary Evening School in all its ramifications, leading up to higher work now possible under the New Code of 1891, the various departments of Commercial Education and Technical Instruction for women and girls being dealt with, and next in order, Science and Art Evening Schools, Manual Instruction, Miscellaneous Subjects of Instruction, and Advanced Technical Instruction, each receive attention. Higher Grade Schools, as they are generally called, are so closely linked with Technical Instruction that it has been thought well to devote a portion of the Manual to them. Book The Principles and Practice of Continuation Teaching

Download or read book The Principles and Practice of Continuation Teaching written by Charles H. Kirton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Continuation Teaching: A Manual of Principles and Teaching Methods Specially Adapted to the Requirements of Teachers in Commercial and Continuation Schools In writing this book I have been conscious of two main purposes - to give inspiration and to give help. I have particularly remembered the reader for whom the text is primarily intended, and I have accordingly refrained from plunging too deeply in pedagogical theory and speculation, preferring that those who are interested should pursue their studied farther afield. At the same time I have endeavoured to offer some definite body of theoretical principles to those whose reading will, of choice or of necessity, be confined to the limits of these pages. Throughout, I have been mindful of things as they are - of the teacher as he is, and of the student as he is. As between "What is and what might be" I have felt that this book should primarily consider "what is"; that it should look things squarely in the face, and, as far as possible, give those who consult it a present help - help straightway directed to their immediate needs and circumstances. At the same time I cannot expect that the very definite expressions of opinion which I have allowed myself upon a very wide range of matters, will escape challenge or controversy: my justification is that I hope thereby to have stimulated in my readers an active, as distinguished from a merely passive, interest in educational questions. If I have in measure done this, I feel that to that extent, at least, my efforts will have proved successful. I have endeavoured to make faithful acknowledgment of my indebtedness to particular authors of whose works I have availed in certain chapters, and if I have come short it is in the chapters on "Principles of Teaching based on Psychology," for much of which I have drawn upon Prof. James's well-known writings, and "Aids to Teaching based upon some Principles of Logic," in which I have been equally indebted to Prof. Aitkins's "The Principles of Logic." Those who know my propaganda work amongst Commercial Teachers will recognise in the chapter on "The Teacher and his Interests" a further plea for the consolidation and unifying of our scattered organisations. To those, and to all Commercial Teachers, I say "We must come together." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Manual Element in Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Manual Element in Education Classic Reprint written by John Daniel Runkle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual Element in Education Before proceeding to an account of some schools in which the Russian method of mechanic art education is used, I will sim ply add that the Imperial Technical School of Moscow was the first to show that it is best to teach an art before attempting to apply it; that the mechanic arts can be taught to classes through a graded series of examples by the usual laboratory methods which are used in teaching the s01ences. The ideas involved in the system are, first, to entirely separate the art from the trade, - the instruction-shops from the construction shops; second, to teach each art in its own shop third, to equip each shop with as many places and sets of tools, and thus accommodate as many pupils as the teacher can instruct at the same time; fourth, to design and graduate the series of samples to be worked out in each shop on educational grounds; and, fifth, to adopt the proper tests for proficiency and progress. Book The Adult Learner

Download or read book The Adult Learner written by Malcolm S. Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Book The History of Federal and State Aid to Higher Education in the United States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Federal and State Aid to Higher Education in the United States One of the chief difficulties encountered in writing the following monograph, has been to determine what schools should be classified as institutions of higher education. When treated historically higher education is quite relative in its nature. There is no line that can be drawn separating into groups schools of the same grade of work. The names of institutions are misleading; an Old time academy might have been equal in curriculum and instruction to a modern college, and on the other hand a modern high school may be equivalent to an old time college. There has always been a tendency for an institution, when first founded, to take upon itself a great name with the hope of soon becoming greater than its name. All classification is at best merely relative. Under such circumstances there is only one alternative - to classify institutions appearing under the names of college and uni versity as schools Of superior instruction. On the other hand, many normal schools have courses of instruction ranging into the classics and higher English branches. But as these schools are professional, being devoted to the preparation Of teachers in the primary and secondary schools, they are naturally excluded from the classification under higher education. They should be treated by themselves, and it would be exceedingly interesting to trace the history of normal education in the United States. The question of determining the position of pure agricultural and technical schools, where the chief work has been directed to manual training rather than to theoretical knowledge, is not easily settled. In this monograph the agricultural and mechanical colleges have been in cluded, as upon the whole the best solution of the question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Education: A Brief History of the Rhode Island Institute of Instruction, Including a Synopsis of Annual and Other Meetings, List of Officers and Members, Together With the Constitution and Charter If the Cause Of Public Education in Rhode Island, now so universally popular, did, not at an early day engage the atten tion of the Body Politic here, as in other Colonies, the neglect, seeming or real, should be attributed rather to the peculiar circumstances under which this Colony was settled than to a want of appreciation of good learning. It will be borne in mind when making a contrast between the early educational condition of Rhode Island and that of her neighbor Colonies, that she labored under difficulties which constituted no part Of their experience; and that while the settlements at Plymouth, Boston, Salem and New Haven, were begun with organized bodies of men, bringing with them means for at once establishing the Church and the School House, our Colony Life was begun by a handful of Refugees from their first chosen home in the Bay Colony, too few in numbers to do more at the outstart than to subdue enough Of the wilderness to make for themselves an unenviable home too poor to command at the moment and put in Operation the agencies of a high civilization; and too much occupied in protecting themselves against aboriginal and other dangers to establish, as a first step, the Public School and the University.
