Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Ancient Geography and History The work of which the present Handbook is a translation, consists of three portions: - a) Outlines of Ancient History. b) Outlines of Medieval History. c) Outlines of Modern History. The whole forms a work of moderate extent, and of great accuracy. The second portion is already in the press, and the Editor cannot but entertain a confident hope that, when the whole work is published, it will have a considerable effect in promoting the study of General History in our Classical Schools. A complete set of Questions upon the Historical portions has been added: but no liberty has been taken with the text in any part except that which relates to the History of the Jews. For this portion, the author is not responsible; for though he has generally been followed, the alterations made were too numerous and too much interwoven with the original matter, to allow of their being distinguished by brackets. A small and cheap, but accurate, Classical Atlas, intended as a Companion to the Editor's "Histories Antique Epitome," is about to be published by Messrs. Rivington. It will be found sufficient for the student of this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ancient Geography Dr. Kiepert's excellent Atlas of Ancient Geography is in use in many of our leading schools, and it may be supposed therefore that the appearance of this translation of his Manual of Ancient Geography will be welcome to English teachers and students. The work has enjoyed a wide circulation in Germany, serving as it does as a kind of historical and physical commentary to the various Atlases of Ancient Geography which have been published by the author during the last thirty years. The arrangement of the book for school purposes excludes any attempt at completeness. Such topographical details as can be obtained from maps are purposely omitted, while names are given in regard to their historical importance, and wherever their preservation from ancient times, in a more or less modified form, serves as a proof of continuity and permanence of population. The translation has been throughout carefully revised by the author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ancient Geography: With a Map Showing the Retreat of the 10, 000 Greeks Under Xenophon The work is divided into four books, of which the first, furnishn a brief outline of the gradual exten sion of geographical knowledge among the nations of antiquity, may serve as an introduction to the study, and has been printed in a somewhat smaller type, though it should be borne in mind, that without this intro duction many portions of ancient geography, especially the ideas and allusions of the poets, cannot be under stood. The Space allowed to the description of any particular country or place, has been determined by the more or less important position it occupies in the history of antiquity, so that the south of Europe and western Asia occupy the greater part of the book.
