Los pastos son importantes en principio porque pueden crecer en condiciones marginales donde otros cultivos no pueden, lo cual se atribuye a su mayor eficiencia en el uso del agua y a un máximo aprovechamiento de los nutrientes del suelo; además, los pastos proporcionan materia orgánica al suelo, lo que ayuda en su conservación.
