Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium jointly organized by the IAEA, FAO and WHO, Aix-en-Provence, 1-5 March 1993. Natural isotopes are among the most powerful tools for investigating past and current environmental changes. The purpose of the symposium was to evaluate the costs and benefits of irradiation for treating various food items either alone or in combination with other processes. The evaluation covered applications of the technology in terms of reducing food losses as well as the possible economic impact of irradiation in controlling or reducing certain food-borne illnesses and in expanding trade in certain food items. Discussion focused on the economic benefits of irradiation to control a number of food-borne diseases, especially those originating from the consumption of food of animal origin, and on the potential economic benefit from radiation as a quarantine treatment for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Download or read book Changing Landscapes An Ecological Perspective written by Izaak S. Zonneveld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape Ecology is an emerging science of gaining momentum over the past few decades in the scientific as well as in the planning-management worlds. Although the field is rooted in biology and geography, the approaches to understanding the ecology of a landscape are highly divers. This hybrid vigor provides power to the field. One can no longer view a local ecosystem or land use in isolation from global areas and time frames. The surrounding landscape mosaic and the flows and movements in a landscape must be considered, especially the linkage between humans requiring resources provided by nature, the constraints on their use as well as the responding landscape.

Download or read book Medicinal Plants in China written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1989 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalogues the 150 species of medicinal plants most commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. The book, which was compiled in collaboration with the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, was produced in an effort to communicate knowledge about herbal medicine that has accumulated over thousands of years, has been confirmed through both empirical experience and scientific evaluation, and yet has rarely been published outside the Chinese literature. The book also responds to increasing respect for the value of medicinal plants as a source of efficacious and inexpensive new drugs that offer an important alternative to chemically synthesized medicines. Each plant species is first documented by a full colour photograph taken under natural conditions during the flowering or fruiting season. Where relevant, a second photograph illustrates the plant parts from which the crude drug is extracted. Explanatory notes for each species cover botanical name and synonyms, Chinese name, English name, parts used, description of the plant, its habitat, and geographical distribution, and clinical indications and dosage. Some of the syndromes and clinical signs are described in traditional Chinese medical terminology. Information on indications and dosage is in keeping with theories for the prescription of medicinal plants taken from traditional Chinese pharmacology. To facilitate retrieval of information, plant species are indexed according to botanical names, English names, names in Chinese phonetic alphabet, and Chinese (Han) characters. The book, which was compiled for reference and educational purposes, includes a note advising readers of the dangers of self-treatment.
Download or read book Avian Poultry Production written by Carin Fisker and published by . This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poultry has a crucial place worldwide as the eggs and chicken meat are important and rich sources of protein, vitamins and minerals. Poultry provides rich organic manure and is an important source of income and employment to millions of farmers and other persons engaged in allied activities in the poultry industry. Chickens and turkeys that are commercially raised today are the result of many years of selection and breeding of two or more breeds to continually improve productivity. Poultry farming is the raising of domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese for the purpose of farming meat or eggs for food. Poultry are farmed in great numbers with chickens being the most numerous. More than 50 billion chickens are raised annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs. The chicken industry is made up of meatproducing chickens and egg-producing chickens. The modern meat-type chicken is derived from the deep-breasted Cornish breed and has been selected with an emphasis on producing meat rather than eggs. Further processing of meat chickens has led to many new products geared to the convenienceminded consumer, such as boneless, skinless breasts. The turkey industry has developed strains of birds with an emphasis on meat production and breast size, as the white meat has a higher market value in the United States. Many pure breeds of poultry are raised for exhibition, hobby and/or breed preservation purposes. There is lots to discover with the comprehensive poultry production. We all know that in order to get the best out of birds, poultry keepers need to be up to date with the latest ideas and techniques. The book Avian (Poultry) Production discusses about the anatomy and physiology of birds, building them the best housing, breeding, egg production and also about preventing parasites and diseases.

Download or read book Aging Options East King County written by Rajiv Nagaich and published by . This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each day in the United States, 10,000 people become eligible to retire. For these individuals, and the thousands of others already retired, retirement issues loom large. Though visions of retirement for most start out as a joyous anticipation of being engaged in activities we did not have time for when working, re-engaging with friends and family, visiting new and exotic places and the like, these visions can be short-lived for many unprepared retirees. The primary reason? An episode with illness (such as a stroke, heart attack, cancer, or a diagnosis of Alzheimers, Parkinsons) can leave the whole family in chaos and render the ill person a huge burden on loved ones. Unplanned illness can lead to many undesirable outcomes, including: A forced and unwelcome move to an institutional care setting; Loss of assets to cover the high cost of care not covered by Medicare and other health insurance; and, A significant burden being placed on loved ones of the ill person. This reality is quite visible to aging Americans who harbor significant anxieties over these issues. For most, this will be the time when we will realize that Medicare does NOT cover long-term care needs in any meaningful fashion. All this leads to the fact that a bout with illness can quickly render traditional retirement planning ineffective in addressing the most critical retirement concerns aging Americans harbor; however, the good news is with proper planning these concerns can be addressed. So what is proper planning? It is coordinated and comprehensive planning around healthcare, housing, financial, and legal issues. It is planning that can help you: Avoid institutional care if that is at all possible; Locate the most appropriate housing alternative if aging at home is not possible Protect your assets not only from probate costs and estate taxes, but from uncovered long-term care and medical costs as well; and, Not become a burden on your loved ones in case of incapacity. The AgingOptions Guide is a primer on these issues and how to develop a plan to have a better retirement than might be possible.
