Desgrana, así, en sus diez capítulos, los grandes ámbitos sobre los que es necesario detenerse y reflexionar: desde los fundamentos y el desarrollo de la vida en el planeta y los retos básicos a los que se enfrenta (demografía galopante, contaminación ubicua, escasez de los recursos naturales, hostilidad histórica hacia la naturaleza) hasta la consideración, urgente y alarmada, de las grandes amenazas (la climática y la vírica, en particular) que se abaten sobre el planeta y nuestras sociedades. Atravesando por cuerpos de conocimiento que necesariamente han de completar esa visión, como la economía ecológica (enmienda a la totalidad de la economía estándar), el papel, sobredimensionado y tantas veces nefasto, de la ciencia y la tecnología, la idea de justicia ecológica como avance sobre el derecho ambiental, y la confrontación con los aspectos más desasosegantes de la postmodernidad, como los que se derivan de la (mal) llamada sociedad de la información, o digital, que el autor no duda en resumir como «negocio, opresión y mito». Aunque, inevitablemente, este Manual se escora hacia los aspectos que con mayor intensidad ha vivido —o sobre los que más ha reflexionado— su autor, deberá quedar a salvo su intención final: «Ser útiles a la sociedad y al planeta, y desempeñar el papel que siempre existe para cada uno de nosotros (y nos está reservado)».

Book excerpt: Despite legal and social advances in the past two decades, sexual and gender minorities continue to face widespread discrimination and violence in many countries. This discrimination and violence lead to exclusion, which adversely impacts their lives, as well as the communities and economies in which they live. A major barrier to addressing this stigma and sexual orientation and gender identity(SOGI)-based exclusion is the lack of SOGI-specific data. Robust, quantitative data on di‚fferential development experiences and outcomes of sexual and gender minorities--especially those in developing countries--is extremely thin. This paucity of data jeopardizes the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and countries' commitment to the principle of 'leaving no one behind' in the eff‚ort to end poverty and inequality. 'Equality of Opportunity for Sexual and Gender Minorities' assesses the unique challenges that sexual and gender minorities face in six important areas: (i) Criminalization and SOGI (ii) Access to education (iii) Access to the labor market (iv) Access to public services and social protection (v) Civil and political inclusion (vi) Protection from hate crimes. This report cov‚ers numerous policy recommendations to prevent and eliminate discriminatory practices in all of the areas covered. It also seeks to inflŽuence legislative changes and support research on institutions and regulations that can ultimately lead to poverty reduction and shared prosperity. At the same time, it acknowledges that the mere existence of inclusive laws and regulations does not ensure that sexual and gender minorities are free from discrimination--the enforcement of those laws is crucial. This publication, the first in a series of studies, will be expanded from the 16 countries included here to a wider set of countries for more in-depth quantitative analysis and to identify possible correlations with socioeconomic outcomes. It will seek to deepen knowledge, facilitate peer learning of good practices, and encourage reforms to increase the inclusion of sexual and gender minorities.

Its focus is on people's way of thinking, their frame of reference, their characteristic outlook on life. Compared to the more traditional area studies, our main focus is not on history or religion or geography, not on tangible material realities of existence in a particular country, but rather on people's shared subjective views of those real ities which are dominant in their minds. The focus of the analysis is essentially psychological; it is centered on perceptions and motivations which influence people's choices and behavior. Compared to individual psychology, the information repre sented by this volume is psycho-cultural in that it is centered on the shared perceptions and motivations which people with the same language, backgrounds, and experiences develop together into a shared cultural view or subjective representation of their universe. The attention psycho-cultural factors are receiving these days follows from the growing realization that their influences are powerful and yet they occur without people's awareness. Based on extensive empirical data produced through an analytic technique of indepth assessment, the Communication Lexicon presents the culturally characteristic system of meanings which members of a particular cultural community develop in construing their world. At the level of specifics the lexicon describes how selected themes such as family, society, work, and entertainment are perceived and understood by members of three cultures: Mexicans, Colombians, and U.S.
