Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... THE RELIGION OF A YOUNG MAN; WITH WORDS BY THE WAY TO OLDER MEN. The Master Builder, in Ibsen's famous play, confesses to an over-mastering fear; he fears the young. Some day he foresees that the new generation will come knocking at the door, and the event terrifies him There is very much the same sort of feeling among many people who esteem themselves the exponents and custodians of religion. Nothing occasions them so much dread as the working of the modern spirit. They cannot comprehend that " God fulfils Himself in many ways lest one good custom should corrupt the world." They do not confess their terror in the same way as the Master Builder does; but if their condition of mind were analyzed, it would be found identical with his: they fear the young. Now what is there in the religious demands of the young that is novel, or is there anything to occasion legitimate fear? To answer the second question first: no man who believes in the real progress of the race ought to fear the young. Lack of faith in the young is simply lack of faith in human progress. Whatever work the aged have initiated for their generation, it is for the new generation to fulfil. There is at once a pathetic and profound truth in the saying of St. Paul, when he closes his great list of Hebrew worthies who received not the promise, by declaring that they received it not because without us they could not be made perfect. They had to wait for us. All that they did was an instalment. They did their own work with an entire belief in its finality, as a mason might who works upon one section of a great cathedral, but who does not see what is going on in other sections, and does not know the full plan which he is helping to complete. In cathedral building generations pass, ...

Book Getting Married Classic Reprint

Download or read book Getting Married Classic Reprint written by Bernard Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Getting Married Now most laws are, and all laws ought to be, stronger than the strongest individual. Certam the marriage law is. The only people who successfully evade it are those who actually avail themselves of its shelter by pre tending to he married when they are not, and by Bohe mians who have no position to lose and no career to be closed. In every other case open violation of the mar riage laws means either downright ruin or such inconve niemce and disablement as a prudent man or woman would get married ten times over rather than face. And these disablements and inconveniences are not even the price of freedom; for, as Brieux has shewn so convinc ingly in Les Hannetons, an avowedly illicit union is often found in practice to be as tyrannical and as hard to es cape from as the worst legal one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage: A Harmony of Body and Soul During the past few years there has been manifested a growing sense of the necessity for the careful and scientific study of questions affecting social purity. However important it is that social evil should be faced and dealt with, it is even more important for the future that men and women should understand more clearly the nature of social good. It is indeed unfortunate that so much more thought and attention is given to the discussion of moral failure and moral difficulties than to frank and positive moral teaching. This series of pamphlets has been prepared in the belief that the presentation of positive and constructive ideals of sex relationship is one of the great needs of the time. Book Marriage and the Duties of the Marriage Relations Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage and the Duties of the Marriage Relations The discourses which comprise this little volume are a portion of a series of Twelve Lectures on im portant practical subjects, addressed to the young men and ladies of my congregation during the past winter. I was urgently solicited to publish the entire series in a single volume, but chose rather to present what I had to say on the subject of Marriage and the Duties of the Marriage Relations, in a book by itself, as I have long cherished a desire to publish a sort of practical Manual for Young Men, embracing not only the other topics discussed in this series, but taking a wider range and presenting many useful hints, and illustrating many important principles of a different nature, calculated to lead the young in the paths of virtue, honor and prosperity. This de sire I hope to accomplish at no late day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
