Book Valuation of marine and estuarine coastal ecosystem services in the Canary Current large marine ecosystem region valuation des services cosyst miques marins c tiers et estuariens dans la r gion du grand cosyst me marin du courant des Canaries

Download or read book Valuation of marine and estuarine coastal ecosystem services in the Canary Current large marine ecosystem region valuation des services cosyst miques marins c tiers et estuariens dans la r gion du grand cosyst me marin du courant des Canaries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-10-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem valuation is a process that assigns a monetary value to the benefits that are provided by an ecosystem and its ecosystem services. This study carries out the economic valuation of marine and estuarine coastal ecosystem services in the Canary Current Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). The CCLME stretches along the coast of Western Africa, from Morocco to Guinea, and is characterized by high biological productivity due to the upwelling of deep, cold oceanic waters along this coast. This also supports a high abundance of fish resources (both pelagic and demersal) and overall high biodiversity. This study reviews and assesses ecosystem services provided by the marine areas, coastal mangroves and seagrass meadows. These coastal areas not only provide habitats for some commercial fish species, but also feeding grounds, nurseries, or refuges. Therefore, mangroves and seagrasses can play an important role in maintaining fish stocks.

Book Trees forests and land use in drylands the first global assessment

Download or read book Trees forests and land use in drylands the first global assessment written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-11-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drylands cover 41 percent of the Earth's land surface. This publication presents the results of the first global assessment of trees, forests and land use in these lands. The assessment breaks new methodological ground: it relies on the visual interpreation of freely available satellite images, carried out by more than 200 experts in a series of regional workshops. Using a tool called Open Foris ollect Earth, developed by FAO in collaboration with Google, participants gathered and analysed information for mrore than 200 000 sample plots worldwide. For each region, the report summarizes the distribution of forests, other wooded land and other land uses including grasslands, croplands, built-up areas and barren land, across all drylands and by aridity zone. It also estimates tree canopy cover, shrub cover, forest type and presence of trees outside forest. Indicatng that the global drylands contain more than one-quarter of the world's forest area, and that trees are present on 31 percent of the world's dryland area, the report provides a baseline for future monitoring and will support countries in their efforts to identify appropriate investments for the restoration and sustainable management of drylands.

Book Deltas in the Anthropocene

Download or read book Deltas in the Anthropocene written by Robert J. Nicholls and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anthropocene is the human-dominated modern era that has accelerated social, environmental and climate change across the world in the last few decades. This open access book examines the challenges the Anthropocene presents to the sustainable management of deltas, both the many threats as well as the opportunities. In the world’s deltas the Anthropocene is manifest in major land use change, the damming of rivers, the engineering of coasts and the growth of some of the world’s largest megacities; deltas are home to one in twelve of all people in the world. The book explores bio-physical and social dynamics and makes clear adaptation choices and trade-offs that underpin policy and governance processes, including visionary delta management plans. It details new analysis to illustrate these challenges, based on three significant and contrasting deltas: the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna, Mahanadi and Volta. This multi-disciplinary, policy-orientated volume is strongly aligned to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals as delta populations often experience extremes of poverty, gender and structural inequality, variable levels of health and well-being, while being vulnerable to extreme and systematic climate change.

Book An IUCN situation analysis of terrestrial and freshwater fauna in West and Central Africa

Download or read book An IUCN situation analysis of terrestrial and freshwater fauna in West and Central Africa written by and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This situation analysis was undertaken to inform responses to several resolutions made at the 5th World Conservation Congress in 2012 about the plight of large vertebrates in West and Central Africa. It draws on a wide range of information to provide information on the status of these species, important sites, pressures, legislation, the effectiveness of protected areas, and both community-based incentives for conservation and institutional responses. The overriding conclusion is of substantial wildlife declines and inadequate responses to either long-standing pressures or rapidly escalating threats that have emerged in recent years.

Book The Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone of West and Central Africa

Download or read book The Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone of West and Central Africa written by Salif Diop and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the main focus of this book is on the estuaries, its scope goes well beyond this particular coastal feature. Indeed, the estuary can only be considered as part of the life cycle of the entire river and the marine area it feeds into: an area particularly subject to human and natural pressures. The main estuaries and deltas of West and Central Africa region provide a variety of goods and services to its coastal population. The most important of them are related to critical fish habitat, wood and charcoal from mangroves, as well as space for agriculture, aquaculture, urban development, tourism and transport. Particular emphasis has been made in this book on mangroves that play a significant role in terms of flood control, groundwater replenishment, coastline stabilization and protection against storms. They also retain sediments and nutrients, purify water, and provide critical carbon storage. Such hydrological and ecological functions explain the focus on serving mangrove ecosystems and the nearby communities, which draw significant income from fishing, rice production, tourism, salt extraction and other activities such as harvesting honey and medicinal plants, hence the need for preserving mangrove ecosystems to ensure sustainability of the estuaries and deltas of West and Central Africa region. The book has a foreword by Mr. Achim Steiner, United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNEP who is stating that credible and up-to-date information is essential for the public at large but more specifically for scientists, researchers, managers, decision-makers all working together in order to safeguard, protect and sustainably manage estuaries, deltas and lagoons, and the coastal and ocean waters of Western and Central Africa.
