In addition to a fresh, vibrant translation -- the first from the Middle French original since the fifteenth century -- this edition of The Book of John Mandeville offers a succinct, broad-ranging Introduction to the work that touches on the question of authorship, the sources on which the text drew, and the transformation and reception of the work down to the present day. Also included are notes setting the work in its historical and cultural context and selections from related texts, including significant textual variants from William of Boldenseles Book of Certain Regions beyond the Mediterranean and Odoric of Pordenones Relatio.

Book The Book of John Mandeville

Download or read book The Book of John Mandeville written by Sir John Mandeville and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of John Mandeville has tended to be neglected by modern teachers and scholars, yet this intriguing and copious work has much to offer the student of medieval literature, history, and culture. [It] was a contemporary bestseller, providing readers with exotic information about locales from Constantinople to China and about the social and religious practices of peoples such as the Greeks, Muslims, and Brahmins. The Book first appeared in the middle of the fourteenth century and by the next century could be found in an extraordinary range of European languages: not only Latin, French, German, English, and Italian, but also Czech, Danish, and Irish. Its wide readership is also attested by the two hundred fifty to three hundred medieval manuscripts that still survive today. Chaucer borrowed from it, as did the Gawain-poet in the Middle English Cleanness, and its popularity continued long after the Middle Ages.

Book Mandeville s Travels Vol 1

Download or read book Mandeville s Travels Vol 1 written by Jean D'Outremeuse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mandeville's Travels, Vol. 1: Translated From the French; Edited From Ms. Cotton Titus C. XVI, in the British Museum; d104 The introduction and notes, in which the reasons for re - editing the Cotton ms. Of Mandeville with hardly any emendations will be fully stated, are reserved for a later volume. For the present, it may be stated that the editor's choice lay between two principal manuscripts, the Cotton ms., first edited in 1725 and since then frequently reprinted from that edition, and the Egerton ms, edited with full commentary for the Roxburghe Club by Sir George Warner Imperfect as the Cotton version is, it adheres very closely to the French original, as represented in Sir George Warner's anglo-french text, and in two Brussels mss. Copied by the present editor. Its mistakes are to a great extent due to the anonymous English translator. They exemplify the way in which the growth of literary Middle English was influenced by French phras'eology, and they are traceable to three main causes (l) the original French book, and a fortiori its Englisher, is quite inaccurate in its geography (2) the Englisher followed a faulty manuscript (3) he was very imperfectly acquainted with its language, and very slipshod in his grammar. On the whole, his method was that of a schoolboy, who follows his author literally, without much attention to sense or idiom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called Travels of Sir John Mandeville (c. 1356) was one of the most popular books of the late Middle Ages. Translated into many European languages and widely circulating in both manuscript and printed forms, the pseudo English knight’s account had a lasting influence on the voyages of discovery and durably affected Europe’s perception of exotic lands and peoples. The early modern period witnessed the slow erosion of Mandeville’s prestige as an authority and the gradual development of new responses to his book. Some still supported the account’s general claim to authenticity while questioning details here and there, and some openly denounced it as a hoax. After considering the general issues of edition and reception of Mandeville in an opening section, the volume moves on to explore theological and epistemological concerns in a second section, before tackling literary and dramatic reworkings in a final section. Examining in detail a diverse range of texts and issues, these essays ultimately bear witness to the complexity of early modern engagements with a late medieval legacy which Mandeville emblematizes.

Book Mandeville s Travails

Download or read book Mandeville s Travails written by Francis Tobienne and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical methodology for analyzing travel literature. The subject of travel literature, as well as travel literatures, have not always been regarded with respect or given much critical attention. In order to amend this lack of positive reception, Francis Tobienne Jr. analyzes the late medieval text Mandeville’s Travels, specifically the Cotton MS. This text, though not overly popular currently, was among the most popular pieces of literature for well beyond its fourteenth-century inception in some three hundred manuscripts divided into three groups as well as early printed editions; further, this text offers a way in which to approach other pieces of travel literature. To facilitate this critical process Tobienne proposes a seven-part method: 1. Identify and Define the Problem, 2. Make Observations, 3. Look for Regularities, 4. Wonder Why Regularities Exist, 5. Propose a Hypothesis, 6. Use an Experiment and 7. Have Reproducible Results. Of note, Mandeville’s Travels is both the impetus behind this seven-part method, as well as the object of study. Thus, Tobienne showcases how each element of the seven-part method is at play in the text, even as he argues for the text’s importance within medieval studies. Also included in this examination is the application of this seven-part method to medieval and post-period pieces of literature. The book culminates in an argument for the canonization and importance of Mandeville’s Travels in and beyond medieval studies.
