Book La Mancomunitat de Catalunya 1914 simposi del centenari

Download or read book La Mancomunitat de Catalunya 1914 simposi del centenari written by Institut d'Estudis Catalans and published by Institut d'Estudis Catalans. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book History of Catalonia and Its Implications for Contemporary Nationalism and Cultural Conflict

Download or read book History of Catalonia and Its Implications for Contemporary Nationalism and Cultural Conflict written by Cortijo Ocaña, Antonio and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia have prompted scholars from several disciplines to research the singularity of this region and of the territories of the old Crown of Aragon. Against the backdrop of the pro-independence movement, those in favor and against have insisted on the particularity or commonality of Catalonia and the Països Catalans (Catalan-speaking areas) within the Spanish State. From the Catalan point of view, their singularity is not sufficiently recognized, and respect for their institutions and their autonomy is at stake to the point that many prefer to secede from Spain. Singularity or its absence play a relevant role in the construction of identity, which seems to be key in understanding many Catalans' attitudes towards the central government, a fluid concept that allows for a variety of interpretations. History of Catalonia and Its Implications for Contemporary Nationalism and Cultural Conflict is a critical reference book that centers around the topic of Catalan cultural and linguistic identity. With input from renowned scholars in several fields, the chapters explore the issue of Catalan identity from a variety of perspectives. While highlighting the legal and historical component to identity and also sociolinguistics and political linguistics, this book is ideally intended for scholars in the fields of Hispanic studies, history, linguistics, political science, and literary studies as well as practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in contemporary politics and the political developments in Spain regarding Catalonia.

Book Catalonia A New Independent State in Europe

Download or read book Catalonia A New Independent State in Europe written by Xavier Cuadras Morató and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalonia: A New Independent State in Europe examines the main issues of the political process which is taking place in Catalonia today. The political confrontation between the Spanish and Catalan institutions has now reached the international arena, especially the debates concerning international recognition of a new Catalan state and its membership of the European Union (EU) and other international institutions. There are no precedents for the secession of a region from an EU member country that could be applied to the case of Catalonia. Therefore, it is not surprising that the world has many unanswered question about the process. This volume aims to provide answers to many of these questions in a systematic and rigorous way. Why has the political scenario in Catalonia changed so radically and so rapidly? Is this new situation only temporary and support for independence is likely to vanish very soon? What role has the deep economic crisis in Catalonia and in Spain played in the process? Is a potential new Catalan state economically viable? Which are the main legal controversies about self-determination and independence between the Spanish and Catalan institutions? Would an independent Catalonia be a member of the EU? This book will be of great use to academics and students in the field of politics and international relations, particularly those interested in European economic and political studies. It will also interest a wide segment of general readers interested in contemporary political issues.

Book Cultural Heritage and International Law

Download or read book Cultural Heritage and International Law written by Evelyne Lagrange and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the objects, means and ends of international cultural heritage protection. It starts from a broad conception of cultural heritage that encompasses both tangible property, such as museum objects or buildings, and intangible heritage, such as languages and traditions. Cultural heritage thus defined is protected by various legal regimes, including the law of armed conflicts, UNESCO Conventions and international criminal law. With a view to strengthening international protection, the authors analyze existing regimes and elaborate innovative concepts, such as blue helmets of culture and safe havens for endangered cultural heritage. Finally, the ends of international protection come to the fore, and the authors address possible conflicts between protecting cultural diversity and wishes to strengthen cultural identity.

  • Author : Edgar Illas
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press

Download or read book Thinking Barcelona written by Edgar Illas and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking Barcelona studies the ideologies that redefined Barcelona during the 1980s and helped the city adapt to a new economy of tourism, culture, and services. Looking specifically at the lead-up to the 1992 Olympic Games and the urban renewal geared toward establishing Barcelona as a happy combination of European cosmopolitanism and Mediterranean rootedness, Edgar Illas situates Barcelona as a key example of contemporary urban rebranding after the fall of communism and the establishment of the neoliberal “end of history.” Looking at a host of materials associated with the games as well as contemporary architectural and literary works, he offers a compelling look at postmodern globalization as it manifests itself through urban regeneration.
