Book Managing cultural diversity and how to manage it within an organisation

Download or read book Managing cultural diversity and how to manage it within an organisation written by Manuel Handlechner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Hotel Industry / Catering, grade: B, University of Derby, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The topic of diversity has raised significant attention over the past decade (Marx 1999; Kandola et al. 1998; Connerley 2005). Changes in the demographic composition of the workforce in the direction of increasing representation of minority groups – mirrored by changes in other parts of the world – have created the need to understand how ethnically and culturally diverse individuals respond to managerial practices (Warner et al. 2002). Human beings come in all shapes and sizes, colours and forms, but we do not seek to be different, rather we seek to be with our own kind. We are a visually oriented species so perhaps it is somewhat natural that we tend to notice differences. We describe ourselves as Christian, Jew, Democratic, or even as a Manchester football fan. These categories do not refer to natural biological attributes or necessarily to a particular geographical region, but they have an enormous impact on our behaviour (Denton 1997). This report highlights the benefits and problems referring to diversity management and investigates strategies to gain competitive advantage. The hospitality industry is an international and global industry, many companies and organisations are working international and their employees are from many different countries. The hospitality industry is becoming increasingly ‘internationalized’. Indeed, we can say it is ‘globalised’, where a common global experience is taking place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural diversity within many major projects require those managing them to adapt their project management approach to be in harmony with the preferences and behaviours of stakeholders from these cultures; failure to do so can lead to misunderstandings about the project’s purpose and structure; significant difficulties in implementation and in some cases, to conflict or litigation. Omar Zein's Culture and Project Management explores the cultural impact on projects and their management, providing the reader with an understanding of the main elements of cross-cultural theory within the project context. These include our perception of context, achievement, power and group dynamics; and how we approach ambiguity and time. He then identifies key aspects of project management where cultural sensitivity is essential (for example, planning, risk management, project communication and leadership) and offers a structured plan for developing what he calls 'cultural tuning' within a project environment. The book draws on the author’s research, his professional experience of working on transnational projects and his own background. His review of the different theories alongside examples and stories of their practical application, offers project managers a new and extraordinarily rich perspective into the likely dynamics of their projects. Making appropriate adaptations to standard processes, choosing what, how and through whom you communicate with stakeholders may be signal elements in the success or failure of your projects; Culture and Project Management will show where to start.

This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Recruiting, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the implications of cultural diversity for organizational competitiveness of two branches of a selected bank. This exploratory study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data from 47 respondents which comprised the total number of workers of the two branches. The study revealed that the grounds for cultural diversity include age, gender, educational qualification, culture, race, religion, language, values, ethnic groups and psychology. It also found that cultural diversity and its management affects not only organizational competitiveness but also the ability of the organization to achieve its goals. Among others, it is cultural diversity management policy that needs to be established and also for workers to be consistently trained on cultural diversity management issues. Due to globalization, a great many people claim the world as their workplace resulting in a very culturally diverse workforce. Workforce diversity has become an important issue in today's organizations. Diversity exists when an organization's members differ from one another along one or more important dimensions such as race, gender, age, colour, physical ability, ethnicity, etc. Since it's not possible to have organizations without people, managers are increasingly gaining awareness of the importance of people for organizations' competitiveness.

The complex and dynamic business environment requires interaction among people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Competitive corporations cannot allow themselves losing talented and skillful employees due to discriminatory preferences or practices. The customer base has become more diverse as well and as service industries, tourism and hospitality are exposed even to a greater extent to the challenges of the heterogeneous labor market of the 21st century. In tourism industry the contact with the customers is vital, so corporations need to recruit employees who are able to understand and relate to the customers’ needs. The main purpose of managing diversity in business is to bring out the best of employees, in a non discriminatory, fair and just environment, for the benefit of the individuals as well as the prosperity of the whole company. The futurist Jamais Cascio gives the main reasons why workforce diversity has become so important. These are the shift from manufacturing to a service economy, the globalization as well as the innovative business strategies and the increasing demand on teamwork. In addition there are the mergers and alliances acting on a high international level and of course the changing labor market conditions.
