Book Criteria for the Management of Waiting Lists and Waiting Times in Health Care

Download or read book Criteria for the Management of Waiting Lists and Waiting Times in Health Care written by Council of Europe. Committee of Ministers and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report by the Committee of Experts on criteria for the management of waiting lists and waiting times for health care focuses on waiting for hospital treatment, both out-patient and in-patient, and waiting times to the start of treatment or examination in hospitals. It gives a number of reasons for waiting times and waiting lists: the need for care has increased; growing expectation and demand; new technologies leading to wider indications for treatment and an increase in demand; managerial or administrative shortcomings; logistical problems; absence of data; decreasing resources; medical practice - priority setting. The report recommends that the governments of member states review the existence and role of waiting lists and waiting times and where necessary, develop comprehensive and coherent strategies for the management of waiting lists and waiting times. These strategies should take into account the criteria set out in the appendix to the recommendation and the principle of equity in access to health care. The report also recommends that governments ensure that the recommendation is brought to the attention of all relevant actors and adopt the legislative or other measures necessary to give effect to the principles set out in the appendix to the recommendation. Annexes give; examples of minimum data sets from Spain and the UK and suggested outlines for a hospital waiting list policy and for establishing health registers.

Book Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access

Download or read book Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access, long waits for treatment are a function of the disjointed manner in which most health systems have evolved to accommodate the needs and the desires of doctors and administrators, rather than those of patients. The result is a health care system that deploys its most valuable resource-highly trained personnel-inefficiently, leading to an unnecessary imbalance between the demand for appointments and the supply of open appointments. This study makes the case that by using the techniques of systems engineering, new approaches to management, and increased patient and family involvement, the current health care system can move forward to one with greater focus on the preferences of patients to provide convenient, efficient, and excellent health care without the need for costly investment. Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access identifies best practices for making significant improvements in access and system-level change. This report makes recommendations for principles and practices to improve access by promoting efficient scheduling. This study will be a valuable resource for practitioners to progress toward a more patient-focused "How can we help you today?" culture.

Book Implementing Health Care Information Systems

Download or read book Implementing Health Care Information Systems written by Helmuth F. Orthner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series in Computers and Medicine had its origins when I met Jerry Stone of Springer-Verlag at a SCAMC meeting in 1982. We determined that there was a need for good collections of papers that would help disseminate the results of research and application in this field. I had already decided to do what is now Information Systems for Patient Care, and Jerry contributed the idea of making it part of a series. In 1984 the first book was published, and-thanks to Jerry's efforts - Computers and Medicine was underway. Since that time, there have been many changes. Sadly, Jerry died at a very early age and cannot share in the success of the series that he helped found. On the bright side, however, many of the early goals of the series have been met. As the result of equipment improvements and the consequent lowering of costs, com puters are being used in a growing number of medical applications, and the health care community is very computer literate. Thus, the focus of concern has turned from learning about the technology to understanding how that technology can be exploited in a medical environment.

Book Management Science

Download or read book Management Science written by Hans Daellenbach and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management Science provides a comprehensive, accessible overview of the subject, incorporating a broad set of approaches and tools. The authors explore both 'soft' and 'hard' methodologies and highlight conceptual aspects rather than the mathematics of the techniques or computer methods. The book is therefore suitable for students and readers with a wide range of mathematical abilities at both the undergraduate and MBA level. The book bases management science within a clear systems thinking framework. Ideas and concepts are demonstrated with real-life examples and case studies. Readers are shown how decision making over time, under uncertainty, and subject to constraints, multiple objectives, and value and perception conflicts can be modelled, all within this system thinking framework. The second edition of Management Science offers: - An emphasis on problem formulation, indicating how management science and operational research techniques fit into the wider problem-solving process - Revised chapters on queuing, simulation, and problem structuring methods - updated coverage of forecasting, linear and integer programming - New sections on the role of management science consultants - Improved pedagogy, navigation and design - Up-to-date coverage of software - Real-world case studies, encouraging the reader to apply the concepts studied Comprehensive student and lecturer resources are available at www.palgrave.com/business/daellenbach2.

Book Health Care Budgeting and Financial Management

Download or read book Health Care Budgeting and Financial Management written by William J. Ward Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's chaotic health reform environment, it is especially important for non-financial health care managers to have a practical guide to the tools and concepts they need to manage their human, supply, and equipment resources. Today's health care managers, frequently, were yesterday's technicians, physicians, and nurses. This puts them in an interesting predicament, since they know the health care side of the business but often lack the financial management skills necessary to create budgets and manage finances in a health care setting. In this guide, William J. Ward Jr. offers easy-to-understand explanations of basic accounting concepts, including cash flow, operating cost and cost behavior, revenue and reimbursement, and so much more. Providing clearly presented financial information in the context of health care, Ward's book is a one-stop desk reference that provides practical, useful tools and knowledge that readers can immediately put to use. It will help managers, directors, and clinical leaders who work in hospitals, physician practices, and other provider organizations to effectively manage their financial resources on a day-to-day basis, providing guidance for essential tasks such as preparing budgets, managing their departments, and making decisions around financial issues.
