Book Management of multiple heterogeneous unmanned aerial vehicules through transparency capability

Download or read book Management of multiple heterogeneous unmanned aerial vehicules through transparency capability written by Ting Chen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Operational Planning for Multiple Heterogeneous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Three Dimensions

Download or read book Operational Planning for Multiple Heterogeneous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Three Dimensions written by Blair Ellen Leake Negron and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmanned aerial vehicles are being incorporated in an increasing variety of operations. To take full advantage of the vehicles, the plans for the operations should integrate each vehicle's capabilities when planning the operations. This thesis focuses on planning operations for multiple, heterogeneous UAVs for the purpose of monitoring Earth's phenomena through data collection. The planning is done for flight in three dimensions. The problem also includes time window constraints for data collection and incorporates human input in the planning process. Two solution methods are presented: (1) a mixed-integer program, and (2) an algorithm that utilizes a meta-heuristic to generate composite variables for a linear program, called the Composite Operations Planning Algorithm. The suitability of the two methods to solve the operations planning problem is compared based on the ability of each of the methods to find high-value, feasible solutions for large-scale, operationally sized problems in a reasonable amount of time. The analysis shows that the Composite Operations Planning Algorithm can develop operations plans for problems including 15 UAVs and 5000 nodes in less than 25 minutes using a desktop computer.

Book Flying Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Flying Ad Hoc Networks written by Jingjing Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relying on unmanned autonomous flight control programs, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with radio communication devices have been actively developed around the world. Given their low cost, flexible maneuvering and unmanned operation, UAVs have been widely used in both civilian operations and military missions, including environmental monitoring, emergency communications, express distribution, even military surveillance and attacks, for example. Given that a range of standards and protocols used in terrestrial wireless networks are not applicable to UAV networks, and that some practical constraints such as battery power and no-fly zone hinder the maneuverability capability of a single UAV, we need to explore advanced communication and networking theories and methods for the sake of supporting future ultra-reliable and low-latency applications. Typically, the full potential of UAV network’s functionalities can be tapped with the aid of the cooperation of multiple drones relying on their ad hoc networking, in-network communications and coordinated control. Furthermore, some swarm intelligence models and algorithms conceived for dynamic negotiation, path programming, formation flight and task assignment of multiple cooperative drones are also beneficial in terms of extending UAV’s functionalities and coverage, as well as of increasing their efficiency. We call the networking and cooperation of multiple drones as the terminology ‘flying ad hoc network (FANET)’, and there indeed are numerous new challenges to be overcome before the idespread of so-called heterogeneous FANETs. In this book, we examine a range of technical issues in FANETs, from physical-layer channel modeling to MAC-layer resource allocation, while also introducing readers to UAV aided mobile edge computing techniques.

Book Robust Formation Control for Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Download or read book Robust Formation Control for Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles written by Hao Liu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the authors’ recent research results on formation control problems, including time-varying formation, communication delays, fault-tolerant formation for multiple UAV systems with highly nonlinear and coupled, parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances. Differentiating from existing works, this book presents a robust optimal formation approach to designing distributed cooperative control laws for a group of UAVs, based on the linear quadratic regulator control method and the robust compensation theory. The proposed control method is composed of two parts: the nominal part to achieve desired tracking performance and the robust compensation part to restrain the influence of highly nonlinear and strongly coupled parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances on the global closed-loop control system. Furthermore, this book gives proof of their robust properties. The influence of communication delays and actuator fault tolerance can be restrained by the proposed robust formation control protocol, and the formation tracking errors can converge into a neighborhood of the origin bounded by a given constant in a finite time. Moreover, the book provides details about the practical application of the proposed method to design formation control systems for multiple quadrotors and tail-sitters. Additional features include a robust control method that is proposed to address the formation control problem for UAVs and theoretical and experimental research for the cooperative flight of the quadrotor UAV group and the tail-sitter UAV group. Robust Formation Control for Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles is suitable for graduate students, researchers, and engineers in the system and control community, especially those engaged in the areas of robust control, UAV swarming, and multi-agent systems.

Book Design Optimization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Download or read book Design Optimization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles written by Athanasios Papageorgiou and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gradually become a more efficient alternative to manned aircraft, and at present, they are being deployed in a broad spectrum of both military as well as civilian missions. This has led to an unprecedented market expansion with new challenges for the aeronautical industry, and as a result, it has created a need to implement the latest design tools in order to achieve faster idea-to-market times and higher product performance. As a complex engineering product, UAVs are comprised of numerous sub-systems with intricate synergies and hidden dependencies. To this end, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is a method that can identify systems with better performance through the concurrent consideration of several engineering disciplines under a common framework. Nevertheless, there are still many limitations in MDO, and to this date, some of the most critical gaps can be found in the disciplinary modeling, in the analysis capabilities, and in the organizational integration of the method. As an aeronautical product, UAVs are also expected to work together with other systems and to perform in various operating environments. In this respect, System of Systems (SoS) models enable the exploration of design interactions in various missions, and hence, they allow decision makers to identify capabilities that are beyond those of each individual system. As expected, this significantly more complex formulation raises new challenges regarding the decomposition of the problem, while at the same time, it sets further requirements in terms of analyses and mission simulation. In this light, this thesis focuses on the design optimization of UAVs by enhancing the current MDO capabilities and by exploring the use of SoS models. Two literature reviews serve as the basis for identifying the gaps and trends in the field, and in turn, five case studies try to address them by proposing a set of expansions. On the whole, the problem is approached from a technical as well as an organizational point of view, and thus, this research aims to propose solutions that can lead to better performance and that are also meaningful to the Product Development Process (PDP). Having established the above foundation, this work delves firstly into MDO, and more specifically, it presents a framework that has been enhanced with further system models and analysis capabilities, efficient computing solutions, and data visualization tools. At a secondary level, this work addresses the topic of SoS, and in particular, it presents a multi-level decomposition strategy, multi-fidelity disciplinary models, and a mission simulation module. Overall, this thesis presents quantitative data which aim to illustrate the benefits of design optimization on the performance of UAVs, and it concludes with a qualitative assessment of the effects that the proposed methods and tools can have on both the PDP and the organization.

Book Sources of Adaptive Capacity During Multi unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operations

Download or read book Sources of Adaptive Capacity During Multi unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operations written by Thomas Carroll Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Interest in the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) has emerged as a result of the increased capacity to connect distant operators. No longer do pilots need to be collocated with the air vehicles they control. High-bandwidth communication channels afford the opportunity to remotely control these platforms. The anticipated advantages of this approach are obvious. First, removing the crew from the platform represents significant weight reductions that can be exploited in the form of greater range or bigger payloads. The elimination of the cockpit affords greater flexibility in design of the airframe that can enhance the low observability characteristics thereby increasing survivability. With no need to worry about the g-tolerance of a pilot, restrictions on maneuverability are relaxed. Finally and most notably is the removal of human from harm's way. UAVs can enter hostile airspace without the risk of friendly loss of human life. However, these potential benefits come with a heavy cost. Given the foreseen high potential benefits of UAVs, the challenge for developers has shifted from one of demonstrating their value on the battlefield to one of increasing the efficiency of their use. Given the increased demand for such assets, the using community must find ways to reverse the manning ratio for their use. Current concepts of operation require multiple operators for every unmanned system, a ratio will be difficult to sustain if the projected increase in use is to be believed. If this expanded use of UAVs is to be realized, a more desirable manning concept must be identified. However, coordinating control of multiple UAVs at a distance has proven difficult. Several human related issues remain. Research is ongoing addressing many of the traditional human integration problems such as workload, situation awareness, human-computer interface, human interaction with automation, etc. The current research investigates potential sources of adaptive capacity that could enable operators to effectively respond to the dynamic demands of current and future multi-UAV missions. Observations during resent simulation events suggest three themes that can support adaption during operations in response the dynamics inherent in operational task demands; 1) mechanisms to support attention management and seamless transition across tasks, 2) strategies that focus on distribution of tasking across operators that minimize coordination demands, and 3) the ability of operators to easily transition between levels or perspectives (narrow vs wide FOV). The current research investigates these issues, attempting to isolate sources of adaptive capacity and mechanisms that could be implemented within future UAV ground control stations to further the viability of multi-UAV operations.

Book The Effective Use of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Surface Search and Control

Download or read book The Effective Use of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Surface Search and Control written by Robert A. Berner and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the effective use of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the Navy's Surface Search and Control mission. In the future, the Navy hopes to leverage the capabilities of a family of UAVs to provide increased situational awareness in the maritime environment. This family of UAVs includes a Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) UAV and Vertical Take-Off UAVs (VTUAVs). The concepts of operations for how these UAVs work together have yet to be determined. Questions exist about the best number of UAVs, types of UAVs, and tactics that will provide increased capabilities. Through modeling and agent-based simulation, this study explores the validity of future UAV requirements and provides insights into the effectiveness of different UAV combinations. For the scenarios modeled, the best UAV combination is BAMS plus two or three VTUAVs. However, analysis shows that small numbers of VTUAVs can perform as well without BAMS as they do with BAMS. For combinations with multiple UAVs, BAMS proves to be a valuable asset that not only reduces the number of missed classifications, but greatly improves the amount of coverage on all contacts in the maritime environment. BAMS tactics have less effect than the mere presence of BAMS itself.
