Book The Management Of Pacific Marine Resources

Download or read book The Management Of Pacific Marine Resources written by John P Craven and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mineral, food, and energy potential of the oceans increases in importance as land-based resources approach their ultimate limits. International planning for the utilization of common ocean areas beyond territorial waters has thus become a vital task, one made difficult by competition among nations and the unregulated operations of multinational

Book Fish for the future Fisheries development and food security for Kiribati in an era of global climate change

Download or read book Fish for the future Fisheries development and food security for Kiribati in an era of global climate change written by Campbell, B.[Author]; Hanich, Q.[Author] and published by WorldFish. This book was released on with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Kiribati is a vast South Pacific island group with one of the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the world. Kiribati waters support a wealth of marine fisheries activities. These activities occur in oceanic, coastal and inshore environments and range from large, foreign, industrial-scale oceanic fishing operations to small-scale, domestic, inshore subsistence fisheries, aquaculture and recreational fisheries. Kiribati has developed a framework of domestic and international governance arrangements that are designed to sustainably manage its wealth of marine resources. The report provides background information for fisheries projects in Kiribati that aim to build food security, improve artisanal livelihoods and strengthen community engagement in fisheries governance. It provides information on the current status of Kiribati fishery resources (oceanic and coastal), their current governance and future challenges. Fish and fisher alike pay little heed to maritime boundaries and bureaucratic distinctions. This report covers both sides of the oceanic/coastal boundary because of the I-Kiribati communities’ interest in oceanic fisheries such as tuna and their heavy dependence on its fisheries resources for food security and economic development. The report focuses on two potential pilot sites for community-based fisheries management projects: North Tarawa and Butaritari.

This book was released on 1997-12-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's ocean and coastal regionsâ€"which provide wildlife habitat, commercial fish stocks, mineral reserves, travelways, recreation, and moreâ€"are under increasing pressure as more and more people exploit marine resources, leaving environmental damage in their wake. Striking a Balance responds to the urgency for sound decision-making in the management of marine resources. An expert committee proposes principles, goals, and a framework for marine area governance, including new governance structures at the federal and regional levels and improvements for existing governing and regulatory systems. Recommendations include using toolsâ€"such as zoning and liabilityâ€"for resolving conflicts between users, controlling access to marine resources, and enforcing regulations. The book describes the wide-ranging nature and value of marine resources, evaluates their current management, and explores three in-depth case studies. It also touches on the implications of newer, more flexible, less hierarchical approaches to organizational behavior. Striking a Balance will be of interest to everyone concerned about marine resource management, especially federal and state marine managers and regulators, marine scientists and policy analysts, companies and organizations with interests in marine and coastal resources, and advocacy groups.

Book Improving Community based Fisheries Management in Pacific Island Countries

Download or read book Improving Community based Fisheries Management in Pacific Island Countries written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This project aimed to develop and nurture the structures, processes and capacity necessary to manage community-based fisheries in Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Inshore fisheries and marine resources supply daily protein and are one of the few sources of cash for villagers and coastal people in Pacific Island Countries. These fisheries and resources face threats such as climate change, and their continued degradation will have severe consequences for food security and social stability. This project helped governments to maintain the sustainability and security of their inshore fisheries and aquatic resources through improving local management and linkages between local and national scale governance. This project also proposed community-based fisheries management (CBFM) as the vehicle through which these goals could be attained."--Website.

Book Marine Resources Climate Change and International Management Regimes

Download or read book Marine Resources Climate Change and International Management Regimes written by Olav Schram Stokke and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. When changes in the oceans impact fisheries, are states able to handle the management of these changes amongst themselves, or are they locked in patterns and mechanisms that prove inflexible and inefficient in dealing with rapid external environmental changes? This volume explores how international institutions and regimes set up to manage marine resources - predominantly fisheries - are adapting to the effects of climate change and the related consequences for the geographic distribution of these resources. In the Barents Sea, cod is expanding north-eastwards, while in the Norwegian Sea significant changes in abundance, distribution and migration patterns can be observed in pelagic species such as mackerel. In the Southern Ocean, the combined effect of increasing temperatures with associated declines in sea ice, ocean acidification and changes in circulation is likely to affect the geographical distribution of krill. These developments put established international management regimes under pressure. In this interdisciplinary research volume, world-leading marine biologists, international lawyers and political scientists join efforts to study the resilience of Arctic and Antarctic marine resource management institutions to large-scale shifts of major marine stocks"--
