Book Cooperative Management

Download or read book Cooperative Management written by Daniel Côté and published by Editions JFD. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fruit of our work on and with cooperatives of the last 20 years. Throughout this period, we have conducted extensive research on the management of cooperatives, many using the research-action methodology, i.e., directly involving teams of managers, employees and administrators. We also wrote many cooperative management cases while sitting on different (cooperative) boards. On the theoretical level, our work has allowed us to develop three key ideas on which is based our conception of the management of cooperatives. First, a cooperative equilibrium model that aligns values and cooperative principles leading to a proper management framework better adapted for cooperatives. A second key model, developed in the late 1990s, introduces what we have called the identity malaise observed in many cooperatives. This identity malaise needs to be understood for a solution to be found. The third key model in our management approach to cooperative identifies the strategic levers leading to what we have named a new cooperative paradigm (NPC). Started more than 20 years ago, this reflection leads us today to recognize a significant competitive advantage inherent in cooperative organizations. The basic idea of this NPC is focused on finding inherent benefits embedded in the cooperative values and principles when confronted with current and future market challenges, compared to other modes of organization. Today, our vision of these challenges is fuelled by the recognition of emerging strategies namely the congruence of organization-employee values, the shift from customer orientation to engagement orientation to enhance customer loyalty, the feeling of psychological ownership as a differentiator and the democratization and value cocreation process. This book also presents several cases studies of cooperatives in different sectors (agricultural, credit union, insurance, food retail). These cases were written over the last 20 years. They illustrate the different facets and components of the three ideas (models) at the heart of this book.

Book Producer Cooperatives as a New Mode of Production

Download or read book Producer Cooperatives as a New Mode of Production written by Bruno Jossa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion that there is no alternative to capitalism emerged after the fall of the Berlin Wall and made rapid headway due to increasing economic globalisation. More recently, this belief that there is no viable alternative has held firm despite the financial crisis, high unemployment levels and an ever-increasing gap between rich and poor. However, since the appearance of Benjamin Ward’s seminal 1958 article, economic theorists have been developing a workable alternative: a system of self-managed firms. The core argument outlined in this book is that a well-organised system of producer cooperatives would give rise to a new mode of production and, ultimately, a genuinely socialist society. This argument is developed through three key steps. First, following on from Jaroslav Vanek’s definition, it is argued that a ‘Labour-Managed Firm’, a firm which strictly segregates capital incomes from labour incomes, would implement a new production mode because it would reverse the pre-existing relation between capital and labour. Second, given that a system of these ‘Labour-Managed Firm’ cooperatives would reverse the capital-labour relationship, it is suggested that this would constitute a form of market socialism. Third, it is argued that compared to capitalism a system of producer cooperatives offers a wealth of advantages, including the potential for efficiency gains, the eradication of unemployment and the end of exploitation. Ultimately, this book concludes that self-management could take the place of central planning in Marxist visions for the future.

Book Cooperatives and the World of Work

Download or read book Cooperatives and the World of Work written by Bruno Roelants and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world of work and jobs is more uncertain than ever because of various trends impacting it, including the rise of robotics and the gig economy, Cooperatives and the World of Work furthers the debate on the future of work, sustainable development, and the social and solidarity economy of which cooperatives are a fundamental component. Throughout the book, the authors, who are experts in their respective fields, do not limit themselves to praising the advantages of the cooperative model. Rather, they challenge the narrow understanding of cooperatives as a mere business model and raise debate on the more fundamental role that cooperatives play in responding to social changes and in changing society itself. The book is unique in tracing the historical connection between cooperatives and the world of work since the end of the First World War and the recent shifts and restructuring in enterprise and the workplace. It presents a redefinition of the very concept of work, focusing on organizational innovation. This book is published in recognition of 100 years of the International Labour Organization, and gathers together research from leading experts who were brought together at an event co-hosted by the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The authors include anthropologists, environmental planners, biologists, economists, fishery managers and tribal and governmental leaders. Their contributions examine the process of achieving co-management, the institutions created by co-management arrangements, and the benefits which result. Some of these benefits include more efficient and equitable management, less conflict between government and fishermen, and better co-operation between groups of fishermen. Co-operative Management of Local Fisheries looks at successes and failures of these arrangements for shared decision-making and offers guidelines for viable co-operative management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author has to be commended for undertaking this most analytical and useful work. Indeed it is a welcome addition to the literature on cooperatives." --National cooperative Development Corporation Bulletin "This study offers a practical lesson in the process of exploring the strategy for improving the general performance of village co-operatives. In that sense the book is highly valuable1⁄4. It provides a unique reference for guiding researchers, planners, policy makers, leaders and managers." --Deccan Herald "This is a book which is a must for all co-operators." --Kisan World "Tushaar Shah's book Making Farmers' Co-operative Work sparkles. For seldom do books on cooperatives go beyond a stereotyped pile up of facts and observations loosely held together with the glue of analysis relating to a few successful cases instead of undertaking a broad, incisive and complete study... The writer adroitly infuses new thinking and concept into his work with an immaculate sense of timing and the touch of an artist... [At] a time when cooperatives are subjected to pressures of the new economic policy, policy makers, planners and leaders can make ample use of ideas expressed by the author in designing a cooperative. The type of methodology used by the author can be used for the study of coops in other states and also different types of cooperatives. This will not only enhance the value of this work, but also provide a fertile ground for testing his theories, views and theses." --The Cooperator Making Farmers' Cooperatives Work offers an alternative approach to the study of cooperatives and presents a new theory, based on empirical evidence to explain why cooperatives and village organizations succeed or fail. The author, Tushaar Shah presents his theoretical framework in a concise manner, analyzing the performance and limitations of a village cooperative based on a review of 50 case studies. This model has advantages over existing approaches because of its emphasis on central tendencies rather than on extremes, for its explanation of both successes and failures, and for bringing the members of cooperatives to the center of the inquiry, thus offering them a guide for positive action. Students and academics interested in regional development, cooperatives, management studies, organizational behavior, rural development, economics, policy studies, and sociology will find Making Farmers' Cooperatives Work useful and it's approach unique in the way it analyzes, taking a systems view of the cooperative enterprise.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Mutual Co Operative and Co Owned Business

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Mutual Co Operative and Co Owned Business written by Jonathan Michie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Mutuals and Co-Owned Business investigates all types of 'member owned' organizations, whether consumer co-operatives, agricultural and producer co-operatives, worker co-operatives, mutual building societies, friendly societies, credit unions, solidarity organizations, mutual insurance companies, or employee-owned companies. Such organizations can be owned by their consumers, the producers, or the employees - whether through single-stakeholder or multi-stakeholder ownership. This complex set of organizations is named differently across countries: from 'mutual' in the UK, to 'solidarity cooperatives' in Latin America. In some countries, such organizations are not even officially recognized and thus lack a specific denomination. For the sake of clarity, this Handbook will refer to member-owned organizations to encompass the variety of non-investor-owned organizations, and in the national case study chapters the terms used will be those most widely employed in that country. These alternative corporate forms have emerged in a variety of economic sectors in almost all advanced economies since the time of the industrial revolution and the development of capitalism, through the subsequent creation and dominance of the limited liability company. Until recently, these organizations were generally regarded as a rather marginal component of the economy. However, over the past few years, member-owned organizations have come to be seen in some countries, at least, as potentially attractive in light of their ability to tackle various economic and social concerns, and their relative resilience during the financial and economic crises of 2007-2013.
