Book Stakeholder Perspectives on World Heritage and Development in Africa

Download or read book Stakeholder Perspectives on World Heritage and Development in Africa written by Pascall Taruvinga and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stakeholder Perspectives on World Heritage and Development in Africa argues that World Heritage Sites (WHS) across the African continent should adopt practical, innovative, creative, and alternative management approaches that bring greater socio-economic benefits to society, whilst protecting their Outstanding Universal Value. Drawing on empirical evidence gathered in conversation with stakeholders at WHS across Africa, the book explores the challenges involved in implementing conservation and socio-economic development as a stakeholder-driven process. Demonstrating that heritage can no longer be viewed as totally separate from its socio-economic context, Pascall argues that decisions about the management of heritage need to make sense at the local level if they are to be supported by stakeholders. As the book shows, heritage is still viewed and managed through systems, approaches, and strategies inherited from the colonial period, despite the increasing availability of inclusive governance systems. Stakeholders offer alternative, creative, and innovative approaches that capitalize on the potential of World Heritage to contribute to socio-economic development, whilst ensuring that its credibility and integrity are maintained. Stakeholder Perspectives on World Heritage and Development in Africa offers unique insights into local perspectives on World Heritage and development in Africa. The book will be essential reading for academics, students, development partners, and practitioners around the world who are interested in museums and heritage, conservation, development, and the African continent. Also, the book will be useful in the preparation of nomination dossiers, management plans, development plans, and in disaster risk management at WHS.

  • Author : Siyakha Mguni
  • Publisher : NYU Press

Download or read book Termites of the Gods written by Siyakha Mguni and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Termites of the Gods, Siyakha Mguni narrates his personal journey, over many years, to discover the significance of a hitherto enigmatic theme in San rock paintings known as ?formlings?. Formlings are a painting category found across the southern African region, including South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, with its densest concentration in the Matopo Hills, Zimbabwe. Generations of archaeologists and anthropologists have wrestled with the meaning of this painting theme in San cosmology without reaching consensus or a plausible explanation. Drawing on San ethnography published over the past 150 years, Mguni argues that formlings are, in fact, representations of flying termites and their underground nests, and are associated with botantical subjects and a range of larger animals considered by the San to have great power and spiritual significance. This book fills a gap in rock art studies around the interpretation and meaning of formlings. It offers an innovative methodological approach for understanding subject matter in San rock art that is not easily recognisable, and will be an invaluable reference book to students and scholars in rock art studies and archaeology.

Book The economics of biological invasions

Download or read book The economics of biological invasions written by Charles Perrings, Silvana Dalmazzone, Mark Herbert Williamson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000-08-25 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An interesting book catering perhaps for a more specific audience. It does however provide a somewhat new view of the problems of the field of biological invasions and is worth the effort.' - Ann Sundqvist, M2 Best Books 'Once again, Charles Perrings and colleagues have broken new ground by applying economic and ecological analysis to the very real problem of biological invasions. This is path-breaking work in what promises to be a new sub-discipline within environmental economics.' - David Pearce, University College London, UK Biological invasions - the introduction of living organisms beyond their original range - are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss. They are a major threat to human health and a source of pests and pathogens in the world's farms, forests and fisheries. The growth of international trade and travel means that more species are being introduced to more places than ever before. This book represents the first concerted effort to understand the economic causes and consequences of biological invasions. The volume discusses the theoretical and methodological issues raised by invasion, including control strategies, modelling options, and a study of the economic, institutional and policy conditions that predispose countries to biological invasions. Also included are case studies of fisheries, agricultural systems, tropical forests and protected areas affected by invasive species in locations such as the Black Sea, Australia and Africa, and an evaluation of control programmes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of Seeing and Knowing is to demonstrate the depth and wide geographical impact of David Lewis-Williams’ contribution to rock art research by emphasizing theory and methodology drawn from ethnography. Contributors explore what it means to understand and learn from rock art, and a contrast is drawn between those sites where it is possible to provide a modern, ethnographic context, and those sites where it is not. This is the definitive guide to the interplay between ethnography and rock art interpretation, and is an ideal resource for students and researchers alike.

Book Indigenous Perspectives on Sacred Natural Sites

Download or read book Indigenous Perspectives on Sacred Natural Sites written by Jonathan Liljeblad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much previous literature on sacred natural sites has been written from a non-indigenous perspective. In contrast, this book facilitates a greater self-expression of indigenous perspectives regarding treatment of the sacred and its protection and governance in the face of threats from various forms of natural resource exploitation and development. It provides indigenous custodians the opportunity to explain how they view and treat the sacred through a written account that is available to a global audience. It thus illuminates similarities and differences of both definitions, interpretations and governance approaches regarding sacred natural phenomena and their conservation. The volume presents an international range of case studies, from the recent controversy of pipeline construction at Standing Rock, a sacred site for the Sioux people spanning North and South Dakota, to others located in Australia, Canada, East Timor, Hawaii, India, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria and the Philippines. Each chapter includes an analytical introduction and conclusion written by the editors to identify common themes, unique insights and key messages. The book is therefore a valuable teaching resource for students of indigenous studies, anthropology, religion, heritage, human rights and law, nature conservation and environmental protection. It will also be of great interest to professionals and NGOs concerned with nature and heritage conservation.
