Book The Relationship Between Management Control Systems and Trust Over the Life Cycle of an Outsourcing Contract

Download or read book The Relationship Between Management Control Systems and Trust Over the Life Cycle of an Outsourcing Contract written by Neha Sandher and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to answer the following research questions: Do management control systems (MCS) (specifically, formal and informal controls) and trust (specifically, competence and goodwill trust) change over the life cycle of an outsourcing relationship? If so, what factors drive this change? The study argues that outsourcing relationships typically operate in a volatile environment which makes it difficult to anticipate all the aspects of the relationship at the beginning. However, as the engagement between the parties develop, the level of learning and knowledge sharing improves which assists in defining the requirements more precisely. Therefore, the design and the use of MCS may be adjusted to accommodate for these changing circumstances. This study analyses the relationship between MCS and trust by considering the transaction characteristics as well as the life cycle stages of an outsourcing relationship. The research questions were investigated using evidence from a single case study of an IT outsourcing relationship. Overall the data demonstrated that MCS and levels of trust do change over the life cycle stages of an outsourcing relationship. The birth stage of the relationship was associated with a lack of clarity around tasks and activities. In this stage, the reliance was on establishing high levels of communications between the parties and managing the relationship through a trust-based pattern of control. As the relationship progressed, the level of information exchanged between the parties increased which assisted in establishing a bureaucratic-based pattern of control to manage the relationship. The reliance on formal controls lessened during the maturity stage of the relationship once the activities became repetitive and the process/procedures and performance targets were developed. The last two stages of the relationship were characterised by a more bureaucratic-based pattern of control.

Book Governing IT Outsourcing Relationships The Roles of Contract Control and Relational Norms

Download or read book Governing IT Outsourcing Relationships The Roles of Contract Control and Relational Norms written by Daniel Kuhlmann and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of the relationship between service recipient and service provider in IS outsourcing relationships recently gained increased attention as relationships are believed to have a considerable influence on IS outsourcing success. This study adds to this growing field of interest by developing an IS outsourcing relationship framework in the form of a process model. Three rather disjointed areas of research, namely contractual governance, relational norms, and control, have been set in a common context by interrelating them as the three main governance modes that jointly influence the relationship. One in-depth case study has been conducted in order to provide first empirical evidence and to gain deeper insights into the dynamics of relationship governance. The proposed model could be confirmed in general, revealing the following insights: first, contractual and relational governance modes determine the rules that govern the relationship while control is used to execute and enforce specified rules. All three jointly influence the state of the relationship. Second, relational norms have only been observed at an individual level and not at an organizational one. Third, formal control modes have been used to execute and enforce relational norms. This finding contradicts current control theory. Fourth, while contractual and relational governance are seen as complementary and equally important, relational norms have been left completely unmanaged in the observed organization due to a lack of adequate approaches. These results are discussed in detail to outline opportunities for further research.

Book Global Outsourcing Strategies

Download or read book Global Outsourcing Strategies written by Roxane Gervais and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant techniques to which companies and organizations have turned to improve service delivery and reduce costs has been outsourcing. Over the last 10 years, almost any process has been successfully outsourced. But during that period there have been failures too; projects that never realised their objectives or that had unforeseen impact on business. Global Outsourcing Strategies is a state-of-the-art guide to the best lessons to be learned for successfully implementing and outsourcing projects, or for revisiting existing operations. The 22 chapters explore some of the new areas for outsourcing, after traditional targets such as IT and finance. Information is provided on the different facets of the outsourcing process, such as contract negotiation, the risks involved in outsourcing, the need for service level agreements, the critical requirements needed to build and sustain outsourcing relationships, and ethical supply chain issues. There are also sections exploring the impact of outsourcing on organizational structures; the long term effects; legal issues; management control and inter-firm relationships; as well as case studies from both the public and private sector on the practical side of outsourcing. The book will appeal to practitioners and researchers alike. This is a must-have guide for any organization approaching outsourcing as a global (or local) strategy and for those organizations now reviewing or developing their outsourcing partnerships.

Book Management Control of Global Supply Chains

Download or read book Management Control of Global Supply Chains written by Nils Horch and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2009 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within global and rapidly changing environments, cooperation and networking offer possibilities for sharing costs and risks, as well as keeping up with constantly renewed information from outside the firms' boundaries. In line with this, an effective management control of supply chain processes seems to be relevant to compete against other supply chains and to get the required information. In this context, an implementation of a management control institution for inter-firm relations, like a supply chain management control (SCMC), that provides relevant qualitative and quantitative data to manage supply chains reflects an important issue. However, a comprehensive approach with regard to the management control of the entire supply chain and how it can be fulfilled has received scant attention in prior research. The aim of this thesis is therefore to analyze management control systems in global supply chains by means of a mixed methods design with special regard to functional, institutional and instrumental issues. In this context, qualitative data are combined with theoretical insights to develop an empirical model which is tested by means of a quantitative study. Following this, insights into management control aspects, organization of the supply chain management control, management control mechanisms, and the integration of suppliers are provided.

Book Outsourcing Management Functions for the Acquisition of Federal Facilities

Download or read book Outsourcing Management Functions for the Acquisition of Federal Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-01-20 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study outsourcing is defined as the organizational practice of contracting for services from an external entity while retaining control over assets and oversight of the services being outsourced. In the 1980s, a number of factors led to a renewed interest in outsourcing. For private sector organizations, outsourcing was identified as a strategic component of business process reengineering-an effort to streamline an organization and increase its profitability. In the public sector, growing concern about the federal budget deficit, the continuing long-term fiscal crisis of some large cities, and other factors accelerated the use of privatization measures (including outsourcing for services) as a means of increasing the efficiency of government.

Book Managing IT Outsourcing

Download or read book Managing IT Outsourcing written by Erik Beulen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The business landscape is changing. Outsourcing is now a growing phenomenon in which specific functions are subcontracted to specialist companies, often elsewhere in the world. IT represents a particular case for outsourcing, both in terms of benefits and potential inter-organizational problems. Deciding whether to keep IT in-house or to whether outsource it is a key management responsibility. Once a decision for outsourcing has been made, relationships with external provider(s) have to be established and managed. This book combines both research and practical examples to explore how this can be done successfully. Uniquely, the book provides a governance model for such partnerships, exploring the risks and responsibilities involved for both parties. Drawing on the theories of interfirm networks and the boundaries of the firm, here, it provides an accessible and cutting-edge perspective. Incorporating industry examples from a global network of companies (including four case specific chapters), this book investigates partnerships in industrial sectors and IT functions. An invaluable resource for those involved in IT and new technology management as well as strategic business management and planning, this book presents all the necessary theory with an indispensable practical perspective.
