Plants growing wild—particularly unwanted plants found in cultivated ground to the exclusion of the desired crop—have been treated with herbicides and chemical treatments in the past. As concern over environmental, food and consumer safety increases, research has turned to alternatives, including the use of cover crops, thermal treatments and biotechnology to reduce and eliminate unwanted plants. This book provides insight into existing and emerging alternative crop protection methods and includes lessons learned from past methodologies. As crop production resources decline while consumer concerns over safety increase, the effective control of weeds is imperative to insure the maximum possible levels of soil, sunlight and nutrients reach the crop plants. Allows reader to identify the most appropriate solution based on their individual use or case Provides researchers, students and growers with current concepts regarding the use of modern, environment-friendly weed control techniques Presents methods of weed management—an important part of integrated weed management in the future Exploits the knowledge gained from past sustainable weed management efforts

Book The Management Shift

Download or read book The Management Shift written by V. Hlupic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research shows that corporate life expectancy and performance have declined 75% in the last 50 years - organizations need a different approach if they are to survive, let alone thrive. While people are often stated as a company's greatest asset, few businesses have a clear model of leadership that improves engagement, removes barriers to innovation, and uncovers hidden strengths in people and the organization. This book addresses that need and, more importantly, demonstrates HOW organizations can make The Management Shift to a new way of thinking and working. Professor Hlupic argues that organizations now need to adopt a leadership style that focuses on people, purpose and knowledge sharing, creating new types of value and ultimately improving innovation and engagement - leading to improved business. Based on leading-edge research supported by numerous case studies, which demonstrate the power and impact of change, The Management Shift offers managers a practical and systemic approach to diagnose leadership issues in their organization. It then provides an implementation process to shift their mindset and organizational culture to the new level of thinking, performance, and ultimately business success.

Book XML Based Data Management and Multimedia Engineering EDBT 2002 Workshops

Download or read book XML Based Data Management and Multimedia Engineering EDBT 2002 Workshops written by Akmal B. Chaudhri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-11-19 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises papers from the following three workshops that were part of the complete program for the International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT) held in Prague, Czech Republic, in March 2002: XML-Based Data Management (XMLDM) Second International Workshop on Multimedia Data and Document Engineering (MDDE) Young Researchers Workshop (YRWS) Together, the three workshops featured 48 high-quality papers selected from approximately 130 submissions. It was, therefore, difficult to decide on the papers that were to be accepted for presentation. We believe that the accepted papers substantially contribute to their particular fields of research. The workshops were an excellent basis for intense and highly fruitful discussions. The quality and quantity of papers show that the areas of interest for the workshops are highly active. A large number of excellent researchers are working in relevant fields producing research output that is not only of interest to other researchers but also for industry. The organizers and participants of the workshops were highly satisfied with the output. The high quality of the presenters and workshop participants contributed to the success of each workshop. The amazing environment of Prague and the location of the EDBT conference also contributed to the overall success. Last, but not least, our sincere thanks to the conference organizers – the organizing team was always willing to help and if there were things that did not work, assistance was quickly available.

Book Rethinking Management

Download or read book Rethinking Management written by Neil Douglas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the roots and elements of the existing dominant paradigm of management, which can legitimize artless practices and result in dysfunction, and proposes an alternative based on a different understanding of human nature and social and economic life. This paradigm is designed to bring about the conception of organizations as wholes rather than assemblies of disembodied fragments, with managers as facilitators of the work of others and shapers of culture, with a clear sense of purpose and a moral compass. Such a paradigm would result in a practice of management that is more competent, more purposeful, and more ethical, based on a more accurate and complete comprehension of reality. This book sets forth a more optimistic understanding of human nature and collective life, and the hope that we can be and do better. It is a major contribution to the field of management and will benefit academics, managers, and consultants working in the fields of organizational development and strategic change.
