Book The Mana of Mass Society

Download or read book The Mana of Mass Society written by William Mazzarella and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often invoke the “magic” of mass media to describe seductive advertising or charismatic politicians. In The Mana of Mass Society, William Mazzarella asks what happens to social theory if we take that idea seriously. How would it change our understanding of publicity, propaganda, love, and power? Mazzarella reconsiders the concept of “mana,” which served in early anthropology as a troubled bridge between “primitive” ritual and the fascination of mass media. Thinking about mana, Mazzarella shows, means rethinking some of our most fundamental questions: What powers authority? What in us responds to it? Is the mana that animates an Aboriginal ritual the same as the mana that energizes a revolutionary crowd, a consumer public, or an art encounter? At the intersection of anthropology and critical theory, The Mana of Mass Society brings recent conversations around affect, sovereignty, and emergence into creative contact with classic debates on religion, charisma, ideology, and aesthetics.

Book Master Mind

  • Author : Napoleon Hill
  • Publisher : Sound Wisdom
  • Release : 2021-09-21
  • ISBN : 1640952705
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book Master Mind written by Napoleon Hill and published by Sound Wisdom. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon Hill on two occasions wrote extensive memoirs about his life, starting with his youth in Wise County, Virginia, and ending, apparently, during World War II. I say “apparently” because the archives of the Napoleon Hill Foundation contain these two manuscripts, but they are obviously incomplete and end in the 1940s. Mr. Hill died in 1970. His last book, Grow Rich with Peace of Mind, was written in 1967 and sheds some light on his later years; but his own journals and memoirs of those years, if they ever existed, have not yet been found. The two memoirs were titled by Mr. Hill, Wheel of Fortune and Hand of Destiny. They contain details of his life, including his four marriages, two divorces and one annulment, which we at the Foundation have not seen in any of his other writings or speeches. They also contain many details about his successes and failures in business and there were more failures than successes, as he readily admits. The memoirs contain thoughtful insights into the state of mind of this great thinker—how he dealt with failure, profited from defeat, turned adversity into advantage, and ultimately achieved happiness with his last wife, Annie Lou, happiness which had eluded him for most of his life. Mr. Hill has said that the Master Mind principle, in which two or more minds work harmoniously to achieve a common goal, is the most important of the seventeen principles of success he studied during his decades of research into how people attain happy and successful lives. One of the many interesting stories in the memoirs is about how he and his third wife, Rosa Lee, used the Master Mind principle to discover the only one of the seventeen principles that no one had understood or realized before, Cosmic Habitforce. The Trustees of the Napoleon Hill Foundation have combined the two memoirs into one, editing out repetition and putting events in chronological order where it made sense to do so. They chose to title the combined memoirs Master Mind, in recognition of the importance this principle played in his philosophy and life, and as a tribute to the mental giant who was the greatest thinker and writer ever in the fields of personal achievement and self-improvement.

Book Master Dogen s Shinji Shobogenzo

Download or read book Master Dogen s Shinji Shobogenzo written by Gudo Wafu Nishijima and published by . This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shinji Shobogenzo is a marvelous collection of 301 Zen koan stories in three volumes that the Japanese Buddhist master Dogen collected during his four-year stay in China. The stories were written in Chinese, and are records of conversations between Buddhist masters and their students. Dogen used many of these stories as the basis for his formal lectures in his major work, the Shobogenzo. The Shinji Shobogenzo is an essential collection that encompasses many of the well-known koan stories, with many interesting and less familiar ones, together with the comments of a contemporary Buddhist master renowned for his clear and no-nonsense approach. Gudo Nishijima Roshi has published a complete translation and commentary on the stories in Japanese, and he first dictated an English translation to three of his students in the early 1980s, together with a commentary on each story, which was produced in three volumes. Only the first of the three volumes was published, but it is now long out of print. This new and completely revised version comprises all three volumes in one edition, together with Nishijimas refreshingly down-to-earth explanations of the stories.
