Book excerpt: When it was originally published, The Academic Man was the first full-scale social science-based study on the American academic profession. The issues identified by Logan Wilson in 1942 remain central to any consideration of the American professoriate. Wilson demonstrates the usefulness of a historical perspective in understanding the present, as well as the considerable continuity in higher education. His acute observations remain a critical base for contemporary studies of higher education. The Academic Man explores three mam aspects of higher education: the academic hierarchy, academic status, and academic processes and functions. He discusses the difficulty college graduates have in finding jobs, a problem still prevalent today. He also examines the small number of publications produced by graduates with Ph.Ds, showing that only a few account for the greatest percentage of publications, as well as the ratio of teaching activities to non-teaching activities performed by faculty members. In his new introduction, Philip G. Altbach discusses the changes that have occurred in the college community during the past half-century, including the expansion of universities and the increasing diversity of students and faculty hi terms of gender, ethnicity, and religious background. At the same tune, he shows how Wilson's basic tenets continue to hold true for contemporary academic life. The timelessness of The Academic Man will make it a valuable resource for students, professors, university administrators, and sociologists.

Naomi Klein While working at the Financial Times, investigative journalist Matt Kennard uncovered a scam - a deception and rip-off of immense proportions. From slanging matches with Henry Kissinger to afternoon coffees with the man who captured Che Guevara, Kennard’s unbridled access over four years to the crème de la crème of the global elite left him with only one conclusion: the world as we know it is run by a squad of cigar-smoking men with big guns, big cash and a reach much too close to home. But, through encounters with high-profile opponents of the racket, such as Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Gael García Bernal and others, Kennard shows that human decency remains. Now it’s time for the world’s citizens to also uncover the racket.

Book Criminology and Archaeology

  • Author : Simon Mackenzie
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2009-11-04
  • ISBN : 1847315461
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Criminology and Archaeology written by Simon Mackenzie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the product of a collaborative venture between criminologists and archaeologists concerned with the international market in illicit antiquities. It examines the state of regulation in the antiquities market, with a particular focus on the UK's position, but also with reference to the international context. Looting happens routinely and many countries have rich deposits of cultural material. Antiquities are highly collectable, and there are several prominent international centres for trade. As well as the legitimate face of the antiquities trade there therefore exists an international illicit market in which cultural objects are trafficked for profit in breach of national laws and international conventions. It is within such a complex international and local regulatory context that the essays presented here emerge, focusing upon three areas in particular: the demand for looted antiquities; the supply of cultural artefacts which originate in source countries; and regulation of the international market in antiquities. Criminology has long been interested in transnational crime and its regulation. Archaeologists' concerns lie in the destructive consequences of antiquities looting, which erases our knowledge of the past. In the papers presented here both disciplines present new data and analysis to forge a more coherent understanding of the nature and failings of the regulatory framework currently in place to combat the criminal market in antiquities.

Book David Johnson Passed Through Here

Download or read book David Johnson Passed Through Here written by Harrison Livingstone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " They thought of me as odd. Some made fun of me. Others attacked me. And now and then someone took pity and befriended me, and was there when I tried to talk. But for years after I would still awake screaming in the night, terrified, thousands of miles away, dreaming it over and over " David Johnson is a young man on the run. Behind him lies the wreckage of a broken childhood and a broken home. The memory of beatings that never end. The piercing hatred in his mother's eyes. Behind David Johnson lies a past as harsh and vivid as an open wound-a dream that becomes a nightmare from which he may not wake. Boston. Paris. New York. New Orleans. Hobbs, New Mexico. San Francisco and L.A. There is no pattern to David Johnson's flight, and no direction. What friends he makes along the way he quickly loses. The jobs he has are meaningless. His future is as empty and as threatening as his past. And then comes the day when David Johnson discovers he can run no further-that the nightmare of his life is not a dream at all. The story of David's descent into madness and the brutally affirmative beginnings of his struggle up again is an extraordinary reading experience. The voice of the narrator is the voice of one who has known the pain of which he writes-and savored the triumph of his survival. By his candor and art, he makes that pain and triumph ours.

Book Warring with Words

Download or read book Warring with Words written by Michael Hanne and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars in many of the disciplines surrounding politics explicitly utilize either a narrative perspective or a metaphor perspective (though rarely the two in combination) to analyze issues -- theoretical and practical, domestic and international -- in the broad field of politics. Among the topics they have studied are: competing metaphors for the state or nation which have been coined over the centuries in diverse cultures; the frequency with which communal and international conflicts are generated, at least in part, by the clashing religious and historical narratives held by opposing groups; the cognitive short-cuts employing metaphor by which citizens make sense of politics; the need for political candidates to project a convincing self-narrative; the extent to which the metaphors used to formulate social issues determine the policies which will be developed to resolve them; the failure of narratives around the security of the nation to take account of the individual experiences of women and children. This volume is the first in which eminent scholars from disciplines as diverse as social psychology, anthropology, political theory, international relations, feminist political science, and media studies, have sought to integrate the narrative and the metaphor perspectives on politics. It will appeal to any scholar interested in the many ways in which narrative and metaphor function in combination as cognitive and rhetorical instruments in discourse around politics.
