Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the answers which thinkers give to the question What is Man? depend on the answers they give to every other question--hence the importance of this matter in the world's life and future. Much that is current in theological discussion centers in the same inquiry. It is evident that the Christian must know what the Bible says: and Dr. Ryder Smith is supremely qualified to expound the Bible teaching. The author finds that the Doctrine of Man is implied rather than stated in Holy Writ: he has made it his task to draw out the doctrine, largely by examining the meaning of the Hebrew and Greek terms. He has included a treatment of the Septuagint, because the New Testament usually starts with the Septuagintal use. There is special treatment of the important phrase The Image of God, so frequently encountered in current theological discussion. this is the more advantageous because, Dr. Ryder Smith maintains, the usage has changed since the days of the Bible writers. There are chapters on What ought a man to be? as well as on What is a man?-- and to the writer the former question is the more important. This book, which seeks to put in its right perspective the whole question of the Biblical doctrine of Man, will take its place as the classical and fundamental treatment of this doctrine.

Book excerpt: Liberal attacks on the doctrine of the divinity of Christ have led evangelicals to rightly affirm the centrality of Jesus's divine nature for his person and work. At times, however, this defense of orthodoxy has led some to neglect Christ's full humanity. To counteract this oversight, theologian Bruce Ware takes readers back to the biblical text, where we meet a profoundly human Jesus who struggled with many of the same difficulties and limitations we face today. Like us, he grew in faith and wisdom, tested by every temptation common to man. And like us, he too received power for godliness through the Holy Spirit, and thus serves not only as the divine Lord to be worshiped, but also the supreme Human to be followed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It has been my attempt to lay bare Calvin's own thought and to present it as far as possible in his own way and in his own words. Traditional Calvinism I have studiously avoided, and have made no reference to works on Calvin, ancient or modern, so that this presentation might be free from the imputation of partisanship in any of the different schools, such as that of the Dutch Calvinists, or that of W. Niesel and the late Peter Barth. Consequently, the bulk of the book consists of citations gathered from all over Calvin's works, and arranged together with as little explanatory material of my own as was necessary. I am conscious that in the very arrangement of this material, as also in the exposition, interpretation has been unavoidable, but it is, I believe, in the direction in which Calvin's own thought moves as it is drawn out, particularly in its relevance to the modern theological debate."--Preface, page 7

Book excerpt: Christianity stands or falls by what is believed and thought about Jesus. Brunner's thorough and provocative analysis of the Biblical doctrine of the Person and the work of Christ, establishing Jesus Christ as the Mediator between God and man, not only made the central theme of Christianity live again, but established him as one of the great modern theologians. Why should there be an intermediary between God and mankind Brunner's answer is that what matters supremely is not whether man is 'aware' of, or has a 'feeling' for 'something divine', but whether there is only one 'place' at which God challenges man to decision. The God who is real and alive is the God who confronts man in such a way that man knows that he must act. And Jesus Christ, the Mediator, confronts man with the true and living God. The deity of Christ, the humanity of Christ, the God-Man, the Incarnation, and the Atonement are re-examined and rescued from misunderstanding. The result is a clear and provocative discussion concluding that only in Jesus Christ can we know ourselves as we really are; and only in Jesus Christ can God be known as he really is.
