Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of faces, bodies, selves and digital subjectivities abound on new media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, and others-these images represent our new way of being online and of becoming socially mediated. Although researchers are examining digital embodiment, digital representations, and visual vernaculars as a mode of identity performance and management online, there exists no cohesive collection that compiles all these contemporary philosophies into one reader for use in graduate level classrooms or for scholars studying the field. The rationale for this book is to produce a scholarly fulcrum that pulls together scholars from disparate fields of inquiry in the humanities doing work on the common theme of the socially mediated body. The chapters in Mediated Interfaces: The Body on Social Media represent a diverse list of contributors in terms of author representation, inclusivity of theoretical frameworks of analysis, and geographic reach of empirical work. Divided into three sections representing three dominant paradigms on the socially mediated body: representation, presentation, and embodiment, the book provides classic, creative, and contemporary reworkings of these paradigms.

Book Fan Culture

  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

  • ISBN : 1443838624
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Fan Culture written by Katherine Larsen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fan Culture: Theory/Practice brings together the most current scholarship on fan studies, in a way that makes it accessible and usable for both students and teachers. The essays in this collection explore the relative influence of academic and fan perspectives in the current group of scholar-fans and the ethical dilemmas that sometimes emerge from this interplay of identities, the impact of the increasingly reciprocal relationship between textual producers and consumers, and gender differences in fannish meaning-making and interaction. Fan Studies addresses these current issues through some of the most popular fannish texts, including Doctor Who, Torchwood, Star Wars, Star Trek, Supernatural, Smallville and Twilight. Fan Culture: Theory/Practice is thus designed to challenge some accepted notions, while asking relevant questions about pedagogy. How do we understand the state of the field, and teach fan studies both effectively and responsibly? The essays contained in this volume explore the dominant themes in the field, and seek to situate fan studies as a discipline with a pedagogy of its own.

Book Son With Two Moms

  • Author : Anthony Hynes
  • Publisher : eBook Partnership

Download or read book Son With Two Moms written by Anthony Hynes and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was taken in at the age of three by Mary Hynes and Janet Simons, after being separated from my mother, who suffered from schizophrenia. After that time, I was shuffled in and out of my grandmothers home before being placed in an orphanage, where I remained for one year. After a tumultuous court battle, I went home with the only two women brave enough to raise me. However, neither I nor my guardians could have imagined the trials awaiting our family after the proceedings ended. This story is about a young boy adopted by two lesbians of a different race than mine. However, it is much more than that. The harrowing custody battle that shaped an otherwise beautiful childhood, and my mother's battle with cancer, forced me to look at the world in shades of grey at a far younger age than I would have liked. Those experiences, many of them dealing with issues of race and sexuality, helped me stand out when I wanted to fit in. I yearned to be an average child, but people kept asking me about the two women who came to pick me up from school everyday. "e;Why are they white? And do they sleep in the same bed?"e; Children kept asking, waiting for an answer. My responses to their queries began to dovetail into deeper stories, explaining not only my life, but my viewpoints as well. One day a college professor discovered one of these viewpoints in one of my papers and suggested I keep writing. Although sharing my story with my closest friends was hard, the prospect of opening up my life to multitudes of people I didn't know was harder. However, in spite of myself, I began to write. From my mother's last hospital stay to my grandmother's questioning of my sexuality, to the first time I was ever told my moms were going to hell: every moment was important, and every event became a chance to become a better person by standing up for what I believed in, my family.

Book Naptime with Theo and Beau

Download or read book Naptime with Theo and Beau written by Jessica Shyba and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-02 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only thing better than naptime is naptime with a friend. Theo the puppy (part-Boxer, part-Shepherd, part-Labrador, part-Sharpei) was rescued by Beau, a twenty-three-month-old toddler, and his family from an animal shelter in Santa Cruz. The two of them instantly became best friends. And every day at naptime, Theo waits for Beau to fall asleep, then curls up next to him. Theo and Beau were already a viral sensation thanks to the "unbearably adorable," "utterly charming" photos that author (Beau's mother) Jessica Shyba has been posting on her popular blogMomma's Gone City. And now, she's matched the very sweetest of them to a charming bedtime text to make a board book that is (as Alyssa Milano said of the blog) "so cute it hurts."
